Book excerpt: Microwave energy is a potentially fast and efficient means of energy for various materials. The coupling of microwave energy into materials during processing involves much more than just shortening the heat-up time relative to conventional processing and it has the potential to provide an additional degree of control over morphology, structure, and mechanical behavior. This report summarizes a multidisciplinary research program sponsored by the Defense Advance Research Project Agency (DARPA) which has been managed by the Materials Directorate, Wright Laboratory, and the Army Research Office. Many fundamental issues relating to the influence of microwave energy on chemistry and mechanical behavior have been investigated and are reported herein. Technology development has been particularly focused on polymeric and composite materials processing. The research has included efforts at two universities, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Michigan State University. Research has also been conducted at the Materials Directorate, Wright Laboratory, the Foster Miller Company and the Aerospace Materials Development group at McDonnell Douglas.

However, microwave processing is complex and multidisciplinary in nature, and a high degree of technical knowledge is needed to determine how, when, and where the technology can be most profitably utilized. This book assesses the potential of microwave technology for industrial applications, reviews the latest equipment and processing methods, and identifies both the gaps in understanding of microwave processing technology and the promising development opportunities that take advantage of this new technology's unique performance characteristics.

Book excerpt: While polymer technology forms one of the largest areas of application of microwave technology, and the methods and procedures used therein are among the most developed, there is still a relative lack of published information on the subject. Microwave-Enhanced Polymer Chemistry and Technology describes novel approaches to polymer processing using microwave technologies. Coverage includes background and scientific data, analysis of processes and product properties in comparison with existing technology, applications that are being used in various approaches, and the status of current research. Features of microwave irradiation, i.e., solvent-free reactions, low waste, energy efficiency, high yield, short reaction time, and possible use of alternative solvents, can play an important role in the development of green chemistry methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer science faces the challenge of meeting growing market demand for polymers whilst achieving sustainability through environmentally friendly processes. Microwave heating has emerged as a greener technique that accelerates a variety of chemical reactions, including polymerization. Microwave-assisted reactions can be cleaner and more rapid and economic analyses suggest that the cost of curing polymers may be reduced by switching over to the use of microwaves. This book provides comprehensive coverage of microwave-assisted polymerization. The first chapter introduces readers to the theory behind the accelerating effects of microwaves on chemical reactions and covers the types of commercial microwave reactors being used for synthesis and processing of polymers that are available on the market. Subsequent chapters are organised by type of reaction, including radical homo and co-polymerizations, step growth polymerization and peptide synthesis. Importantly, analysis of processes and product properties in comparison with conventional methods is also detailed. This book will be a valuable resource for green chemists and polymer scientists and engineers who want to develop sustainable processes.

Moreover, practical examples of the use of microwave energy have been upgraded. It also includes how to easily predict microwave heating using material constants. In addition, coupling analysis simulation with electromagnetic fields and heat transfer which greatly support researchers' experiments is covered. The principal aim of this book hasn’t changed: to introduce chemists through a tutorial approach to the use of microwaves by examining several experiments of microwave chemistry and materials processing. It subsequently enables chemists to fashion their own experiments in microwave chemistry or materials processing. This book helps chemists who take an interest in the use of microwave radiation to overcome difficulties to understand the nature of electromagnetism, microwave engineering, and thermodynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pyrolysis is a recycling technique converting plastic waste into fuels, monomers, or other valuable materials by thermal and catalytic cracking processes. It allows the treatment of mixed, unwashed plastic wastes. For many years research has been carried out on thermally converting waste plastics into useful hydrocarbons liquids such as crude oil and diesel fuel. Recently the technology has matured to the point where commercial plants are now available. Pyrolysis recycling of mixed waste plastics into generator and transportation fuels is seen as the answer for recovering value from unwashed, mixed plastics and achieving their desired diversion from landfill. This book provides an overview of the science and technology of pyrolysis of waste plastics. It describes the types of plastics that are suitable for pyrolysis recycling, the mechanism of pyrolytic degradation of various plastics, characterization of the pyrolysis products and details of commercially mature pyrolysis technologies. This book also covers co-pyrolysis technology, including: waste plastic/waste oil, waste plastics/coal, and waste plastics/rubber.

Book excerpt: The principal aim of this book is to introduce chemists through a tutorial approach to the use of microwaves by examining several experiments of microwave chemistry and materials processing. It will subsequently enable chemists to fashion their own experiments in microwave chemistry or materials processing. Microwave heating has become a popular methodology in introducing thermal energy in chemical reactions and material processing in laboratory-scale experiments. Several research cases where microwave heating has been used in a wide range of fields have been reported, including organic synthesis, polymers, nanomaterials, biomaterials, and ceramic sintering, among others. In most cases, microwave equipment is used as a simple heat source. Therefore the principal benefits of microwave radiation have seldom been taken advantage of. One reason is the necessity to understand the nature of electromagnetism, microwave engineering, and thermodynamics. However, it is difficult for a chemist to appreciate these in a short time, so they act as barriers for the chemist who might take an interest in the use of microwave radiation. This book helps to overcome these barriers by using figures and diagrams instead of equations as much as possible.
