Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conditions for low-noise operation are established to be the following: (1) the use of a well-focused beam, (2) reduction of the diocotron gain of the gun and drift regions to a minimum possible value, (3) full exploitation of magnetic and space-change smoothing for maximum reduction of noise figure, (4) launching the beam very close to the circuit, (5) reducing the space-charge parameter S close to zero, (6) high power gain, and (7) minimizing the initial beam position fluctuations by reducing the cathode thickness. By combining optimum beam focusing, space-charge smoothing, and beam displacement, low noise figures of 10.5 db for the backward-wave amplifier and 18.4 db for the forward-wave amplifier have been obtained without using noise transducers. A better control of the above factors than was possible with the present experimental tube will result in still lower noise figures. With the noise transducing scheme added to the factors listed above, it should be possible to obtain extremely low noise figures as was done by Wadhwa and Van Duzer. (Author).

Book excerpt: Written by an internationally recognized as an expert on the subject of microwave (MW) tubes, this book presents and describes the many types of microwave tubes, and despite competition from solid-state devices (those using GaN, SiC, et cetera), which continue to be used widely and find new applications in defense, communications, medical, and industrial drying. Helix traveling wave tubes (TWTs), as well as coupled cavity TWTs are covered. Klystrons, and how they work, are described, along with the physics behind it and examples of devices and their uses. Vacuum electron devices are explained in detail and examines the harsh environment that must exist in tubes if they are to operate properly. The secondary emission process and its role in the operation of crossed-field devices is also discussed. The design of collectors for linear-beam tubes, including power dissipation and power recovery, are explored. Discussions of important noise sources and techniques that can be used to minimize their effects are also included. Presented in full color, this book contains a balance of practical and theoretical material so that those new to microwave tubes as well as experienced microwave tube technicians, engineers, and managers can benefit from its use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory of Microwave Valves deals with the theory of microwave devices which have found constant use in practice and the operation of which can be understood based on one type of oscillation or wave. The book begins with a review of the fundamental properties of the differential equations and the boundary conditions of electrodynamics, which are then applied to the analysis of the phenomena occurring in a cavity resonator through which an electron beam passes. Subsequent chapters cover the static characteristics of the plane diode; alternating voltage applied to a plane diode; electronics of the plane diode when the influence of space charge is negligible; and application of the total-current method to analyze the plane diode. Also included are separate chapters on the influence of transit effects on noise in a plane diode; amplification of high-frequency signals by a triode; general theory of single-circuit klystron oscillators; and noise in the electron beam. This book was written for students familiar with general electrodynamics at university level.
