Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microwave Fixation of Labile Metabolites documents the proceedings of an official Satellite Symposium of the 8th International Congress of Pharmacology held in Tokyo, Japan, on 25 July 1981. The Symposium was entitled ""Drug Effects on Rapidly Metabolized Compounds in the CNS: Rapid Tissue Fixation with Microwave Irradiation."" The volume begins with a discussion of the use of microwave irradiation to study the concentration and interrelationships of neurochemicals in the brain. This is followed by papers on the effects of immobilization on the increases in cerebellar cyclic GMP induced by cold exposure or apomorphine; importance of rapid enzymatic inactivation prior to the determination of endogenous levels of catecholamines; use of glycolic acid to study catecholamines in the brain following microwave irradiation. Also include are studies on methods for preventing the post mortem increase in ?-aminobutyric acid (GABA); the effect of microwave irradiation on catecholamine levels in the central nervous system; and effect of microwave irradiation in the brain histamine level of rats.

Book excerpt: Learning and Memory: Mechanisms of Information Storage in the Nervous System contains the proceedings of the Seventh International Neurobiological Symposium held at Magdeburg on October 28 to November 2, 1985. Organized into four sections, this book first elucidates the synaptic long-term potentiation. Section II explores hippocampal functions, and Section III describes the biochemistry of memory formation. The last section addresses the principles and modification of learning behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxygen Transport in Red Blood Cells contains the proceedings of the 12th Aharon Katzir Katchalsky Conference held at Tours, France on April 4-7, 1984. Organized into 16 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the influence of heme pocket geometry on ligand binding to heme proteins. Subsequent chapters describe a genetic approach to producing oxygen affinity differences; clinical importance of the oxygen transport function of preserved red blood cells; methods for the measurement of oxygen equilibrium curves of red cell suspensions and hemoglobin solutions; and aspects of oxygen supply to tissue. Other chapters elucidate interactions between hemoglobin and erythrocyte membrane and membrane protein oxidation; incorporation of allosteric effectors of hemoglobin in red blood cells; and significance of low hemoglobin oxygen affinity. The interaction of ligands and other molecules with hemoglobin and the storage of red blood cells having incorporated exogenous allosteric effectors of hemoglobin are also explained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. Tumor epidemiology has traditionally used an analytical approach. In order to study the role played by endogenous factors, such as the biological response to tumors, and genetic and physiological factors, a new approach is required. The retroviruses and oncogens illustrate the need to integrate the study of endogenous and exogenous factors in cancer epidemiology. The new ap proach proposed to cancer epidemiology could hopefully have relevant results, for instance in regard to iatrogenic tumors or tumor prevention. If the reason why most secondary tumors are either acute myeloid leukemias or lymphomas can be understood, it may be possible to prevent these iatrogenic tumors now seen in almost 10 per cent of long term survivors.

The chapters deal with the subject on three different levels: cellular, including the chromosomal level, individual and group. At the cellular level there are chapters dealing with specific chromosomal abnormalities. Numerous chapters deal with oncological genetics, discussing subjects as diverse as estimation of genetic risk to oncogenes. Case studies of specific syndromes also feature. Various chapters deal with the general effects of recent progresses in genetics and the volume as a whole gives a valuable insight into the use of genetics in all areas of modern medicine.

Book excerpt: Hardbound. The Magdeburg Neurobiological Symposia have been run since 1967, and in that time have reflected the growth and divergence of neurobiology. This volume covers the neurobiology of learning, memory and neuronal plasticity, and includes contributions from an international group of attendees who reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. The book is divided into four sections: synaptic long-term potentiation, hippocampal functions, biochemistry of memory formation and principles, and modification of learning and memory, and constitutes the most up-to-date research currently being carried out in this important field.

Book excerpt: Hardbound. This volume contains the proceedings of the highly successful conference organised by the Testicular Tumour Sub-Group of the Yorkshire Urological Cancer Research Group. The last 10 years have seen a revolution in the clinical management of germ cell tumours leading to a high proportion of cases being cured. At present vast improvements in our understanding have answered many questions, resulting in the refinement of therapy, but raised many more. This volume brings together contributions from a wide variety of clinical, paraclinical and laboratory disciplines which will undoubtedly enable these questions to be answered. In bringing together such a variety of contributions this book will greatly facilitate the exchange of information and ideas and promote future advances in this field.
