Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microwave Fixation of Labile Metabolites documents the proceedings of an official Satellite Symposium of the 8th International Congress of Pharmacology held in Tokyo, Japan, on 25 July 1981. The Symposium was entitled ""Drug Effects on Rapidly Metabolized Compounds in the CNS: Rapid Tissue Fixation with Microwave Irradiation."" The volume begins with a discussion of the use of microwave irradiation to study the concentration and interrelationships of neurochemicals in the brain. This is followed by papers on the effects of immobilization on the increases in cerebellar cyclic GMP induced by cold exposure or apomorphine; importance of rapid enzymatic inactivation prior to the determination of endogenous levels of catecholamines; use of glycolic acid to study catecholamines in the brain following microwave irradiation. Also include are studies on methods for preventing the post mortem increase in ?-aminobutyric acid (GABA); the effect of microwave irradiation on catecholamine levels in the central nervous system; and effect of microwave irradiation in the brain histamine level of rats.

Download or read book Oxygen Transport in Red Blood Cells written by Claude Nicolau and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxygen Transport in Red Blood Cells contains the proceedings of the 12th Aharon Katzir Katchalsky Conference held at Tours, France on April 4-7, 1984. Organized into 16 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the influence of heme pocket geometry on ligand binding to heme proteins. Subsequent chapters describe a genetic approach to producing oxygen affinity differences; clinical importance of the oxygen transport function of preserved red blood cells; methods for the measurement of oxygen equilibrium curves of red cell suspensions and hemoglobin solutions; and aspects of oxygen supply to tissue. Other chapters elucidate interactions between hemoglobin and erythrocyte membrane and membrane protein oxidation; incorporation of allosteric effectors of hemoglobin in red blood cells; and significance of low hemoglobin oxygen affinity. The interaction of ligands and other molecules with hemoglobin and the storage of red blood cells having incorporated exogenous allosteric effectors of hemoglobin are also explained.

Book Synopsis Brain Glycogen Metabolism by : Mauro DiNuzzo
Download or read book Brain Glycogen Metabolism written by Mauro DiNuzzo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide a state-of-the-art summary of what is currently known about brain glycogen metabolism, detailing the recent advances in our understanding of why glycogen is so critical for normal brain function. The role of glycogen in cellular neurophysiology remains largely unclear and its specific contribution to the energy demand of brain cells is still elusive.Glycogen is the sole cerebral glucose reserve and is emerging as a fundamental component of brain energy metabolism. Pharmacological or genetic manipulation of glycogen metabolism in the brain impairs memory formation and increases susceptibility to epileptic seizures and cortical spreading depression. Glycogen is also directly implicated in abnormal neuronal excitability and mental retardation that characterize brain disorders like Lafora disease and Pompe disease.

Book Synopsis Cerebral Energy Metabolism and Metabolic Encephalopathy by : D.W. McCandles

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been rapid growth in knowledge pertaining to the nervous system. This has, in some measure, been due to the development and application of a number of techniques such as the 2-deoxyglucose method and microchemical methods for measuring metabolites and regional cerebral blood flow. Data from the application of these techniques are just beginning to be collected, and the next few years promise to bring many new and exciting findings. The study of energy metabolism in brain is particularly interesting due to the fact that although the brain has scant energy reserves (as compared with the liver), it has one of the highest metabolic rates in the body. Recent studies from several laboratories have shown a surprising divergence of re sponses to metabolic insult in different areas of brain. In this regard, the cer ebellum, for example, may have metabolic features which are uniqve from those of any other region. The high-energy phosphate compounds ATP and phos phocreatine, supplied by the oxidative metabolism of glucose, are necessary for normal cerebral functions such as the maintenance of membrane potentials, transmission of impulses, and synthetic processes. Interruption of substrate or "poisoning" of the system by a variety of means lead to a rapid change in cellular energetics, and ultimately cell death. From the clinical standpoint, an interesting feature of metabolic encephalopathy is that in many cases, early diagnosis and treatment may result in a rapid reversal of symptoms.
