Book excerpt: Polarized Light Microscopy is a powerful technique for the identification of powdered explosives. The authors apply the technique here to the characterization in bulk of composite, plastic-bonded explosives, typically consisting of 95 w/o explosive particulate and 5 w/o polymeric binder. Mounting and polishing techniques are described, along with attendant issues of mount dyeing and some complications of cleaning very soft samples. The microstructures of PBX 9501 (based on cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine, or HMX), PBX 9502 (based on triaminotrinitrobenzene or TATB), and X-0535 (based on diaminotetrazine dioxide, or TZX) are compared and contrasted. Selected case studies are presented in which development of prominent structural characteristics, such as particle size and crack density, are tracked from the starting powders through formulation and pressing to serviceable, formed articles.

Book excerpt: A further development of the procedure based on pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC) for the characterization of plastic bonded explosives (PBX's) is described. After grinding, the PBX samples were pressed on a pyrolysis wire followed by Py-GC analysis. The peak areas obtained were normalized and submitted to multivariate data analysis. The use of principal component analysis (PCA) was tested on 5 samples which differed slightly in composition and age. The results were promising and showed that PCA is a powerful tool for the differentiation between PBX samples. The pressure by which the samples were pressed on the pyrolysis wire appeared to be an important parameter. This parameter was optimized together with the pyrolysis temperature and the amount of sample. The optimization experiment was carried out with 2 PBX samples which differed only in crosslink density. It turned out that it was difficult to find optima in the parameters resulting in a maximal difference between the 2 samples. The following settings of the parameters were selected: 5.2 tonnes, 75 mg and 610 C.

Book excerpt: Applications of the developed procedure based on pyrolysis-gas chromatography (Py-GC) and principal component analysis (PCA) for the characterization of plastic bonded explosives (PBX's) are described. Due to difficulties with the commonly used normalization method a new normalization method was developed and applied in this investigation. The patterns in the score plots obtained after PCA of the Py-GC results appeared much clearer using this new method. PBX samples were examined on homogeneity, influence of the amount of antioxidant (Flexzone) and the crosslink density. It appears that PBX's were inhomogeneous despite a thorough mixing of the constituents during the preparation. Aging experiments were performed on samples which differed in the amount of Flexzone and in the crosslink density. As more Flexzone was added the change in the pattern of the GC-peaks became less. No relation could be found between the stability of PBX's and the crosslink density. Finally, a comparison was made between Dutch samples and samples from the UK and Norway. Small differences were observed between the samples from the three nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have implemented the burn model in LS-DYNA. At present, the damage (porosity and specific surface area) is specified as initial conditions. However, history variables that are used by the strength model are reserved as placeholders for the next major revision, which will be a completely interactive model. We have implemented an improved strength model for explosives based on a model for concrete. The model exhibits peak strength and subsequent strain softening in uniaxial compression. The peak strength increases with increasing strain rate and/or reduced ambient temperature. Under triaxial compression compression, the strength continues to increase (or at least not decrease) with increasing strain. This behaviour is common to both concrete and polymer-bonded explosives (PBX) because the microstructure of these composites is similar. Both have aggregate material with a broad particle size distribution, although the length scale for concrete aggregate is two orders of magnitude larger than for PBX. The (cement or polymer) binder adheres to the aggregate, and is both pressure and rate sensitive. There is a larger bind binder content in concrete, compared to the explosive, and the aggregates have different hardness. As a result we expect the parameter values to differ, but the functional forms to be applicable to both. The models have been fit to data from tests on an AWE explosive that is HMX based. The decision to implement the models in LS-DYNA was based on three factors: LS-DYNA is used routinely by the AWE engineering analysis group and has a broad base of experienced users; models implemented in LS-DYNA can be transferred easily to LLNL's ALE 3D using a material model wrapper developed by Rich Becker; and LS-DYNA could accommodate the model requirements for a significant number of additional history variables without the significant time delay associated with code modification.

Kaplan Technion, Israel Institute of Technology Israel The internal microstructure and the microstructural features of materials are of key importance when analysing a material for a given engineering application. In specifying the internal microstructure of a material the chemistry, the crystallography, and the structural morphology need to be considered. For each of these aspects, there are three equally important stages of investigation - specimen preparation, image observation and recording, and the analysis and interpretation of recorded data. Microstructural Characterization of Matenals is an integrated treatment of the science of microstructural characterization which emphasizes the interaction of the specimen with the radiation used to probe the microstructure. The three main aspects of microstructural morphology, phase identification and crystallography, and microanalysis of the chemical composition are all covered in detail. Following an introductory chapter, the principal methods of characterization which are commonly available in a well-equipped laboratory are treated in full. These include diffraction analysis, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and chemical microanalytical techniques. Microstructural Characterization of Materials will be of great value to both undergraduate and graduate students and includes suitable problems for students exercises. More advanced researchers will also find it highly useful as a general reference source.

Book excerpt: TATB-based explosives have been investigated on length scales spanning several orders of magnitude, from just under 10 nm to larger than 1 cm. This has been accomplished using a combination of ultra-small angle x-ray scattering (USAXS), ultra-small angle neutron scattering (USANS), and x-ray computed tomography (XRCT). USAXS determines distributions the smallest structures including hot-spot voids from hundreds of nanometers to a few microns, USANS extends this range to about 10 microns, and two variants of XRCT cover sizes from microns to centimeters. Several examples are presented for LX-17, a triaminotrinitrobenzene based plastic bonded explosive using Kel-F 800. As an extension of previous USAXS results, in these proceedings, an alternate binder results in a more uniform microstructure for the PBX, useful towards design of next-generation TATB-based explosives. These data are an important step to understanding microstructural mechanisms that affect the mechanical properties of TATB-based explosives, and provide complete a comprehensive characterization of the structure of LX-17 from nanometers to centimeters that can be used as empirical input to computational models of detonation, and in determining the relationship between voids and microstructure to detonation properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporation of particular components with specialized properties allows one to tailor the end product's properties. For instance, the sensitivity, burning behavior, thermal or mechanical properties or stability of energetic materials can be affected and even controllably varied through incorporation of such ingredients. This book examines particle technologies as applied to energetic materials such as propellants and explosives, thus filling a void in the literature on this subject. Following an introduction covering general features of energetic materials, the first section of this book describes methods of manufacturing particulate energetic materials, including size reduction, crystallization, atomization, particle formation using supercritical fluids and microencapsulation, agglomeration phenomena, special considerations in mixing explosive particles and the production of nanoparticles. The second section discusses the characterization of particulate materials. Techniques and methods such as particle size analysis, morphology elucidation and the determination of chemical and thermal properties are presented. The wettability of powders and rheological behavior of suspensions and solids are also considered. Furthermore, methods of determining the performance of particular energetic materials are described. Each chapter deals with fundamentals and application possibilities of the various methods presented, with particular emphasis on issues applicable to particulate energetic materials. The book is thus equally relevant for chemists, physicists, material scientists, chemical and mechanical engineers and anyone interested or engaged in particle processing and characterization technologies.
