Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to evaluate material response to plastic deformation between aluminum alloys AA2219-T87 and AA2195-T87. Of particular interest are the deformation conditions that result in subsequent grain refinement or recrystallization. Although both alloys have a face centered cubic (FCC) microstructure, variations are expected in their plastic deformation behavior. During plastic deformation, dislocation motion results in faulted regions whose width can vary according to chemical composition of the alloy. These faulted regions, or stacking faults, influence whether dislocation entanglements form or annihilation occurs during the deformation process. In addition, differences in mechanical properties can affect the amount of adiabatic heating that occurs during deformation. Ultimately these differences can affect the uniformity of deformation and the stability of the microstructure.

Book excerpt: The effect of plastic deformation on subsequent decomposition in the alloys Al-Si (1.2 percent Si) and Al-Mg-Si (1.4 percent Mg2Si) was studied with an electron microscope. These alloys were chosen because the first is easily quenched and does not age at room temperature and because in the second no decomposition after quenching and natural aging is detected with the electron microscope (although the properties change). These alloys were chosen also because they could be studied by the oxide-film method. This method was used to study the surface of the samples, which was etched before deformation and aging. It is then possible to observe simultaneously, on the electron photographs, precipitation, the block structure, and those alterations (slip lines, bending of blocks, cracks, etc.) in the submicroscopic structure of the alloys which are caused by deformation.

Book excerpt: Numerous investigations have demonstrated that intense plastic deformation is an attractive procedure for producing an ultrafine grain size in metallic materials. Torsional deformation under high pressure and equal-channel angular extrusion are two techniques that can produce microstructures with grain sizes in the submicrometer and nanometer range. Materials with these microstructures have many attractive properties. The microstructures formed by these two processing techniques are essentially the same and thus the processes occurring during deformation should be the same. Most previous studies have examined the final microstructures produced as a result of severe plastic deformation and the resulting properties. Only a limited number of studies have examined the evolution of microstructure. As a result, some important aspects of ultra-fine grain formation during severe plastic deformation remain unknown. There is also limited data on the influence of the initial state of the material on the microstructural evolution and mechanisms of ultra-fine grain formation. This limited knowledge base makes optimization of processing routes difficult and retards commercial application of these techniques. The objective of the present work is to examine the microstructure evolution during severe plastic deformation of a 2219 aluminum alloy. Specific attention is given to the mechanism of ultrafine grain formation as a result of severe plastic deformation.

Therefore the production of so-called ultra-fine grained (UFG) microstructures by severe plastic deformation (SPD) is a very interesting topic. One of the most common SPD processes is Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP), which was compared to Confined Channel Die Pressing (CCDP) and cold rolling. In the focus of this work lays on the one hand the influence of different precipitation states on the formation of UFG structures and their influence on the mechanical properties and on the other hand it was examined if the thermal stability of these structures can be improved either by supersaturated solid solution(by impurity drag) or by precipitates (by grain boundary pinning). With a better understanding of the ongoing softening mechanisms a good combination of high strength and good ductility can be achievedby alternating SPD and heat treatment.

Book excerpt: Development of microstructure during thermomechanical processing of an Al-10%Mg-O,1%Zr alloy was examined in the initial portion of this research. The thermomechanical processing involved solution treating; not working by upset forging at 440 C followed by warm rolling material were deformed at three strain rates at temperatures of 200 C, 300 C, and 400 C and were microstructurally examined. It is found that this alloy statically recrystallizes prior to commencing a test at 400 C, the resultant grains deform by boundary sliding and there is extensive cavitation. During lower temperature deformation it was found that either continuous recrystallization or just with no recrystallization occurs and little or no cavitation takes place.

Book excerpt: Superplasticity in AA8090 Al-Li alloy has been a subject of extensive studies, due to its potential for commercial applications since last decade. However, the anisotropy and microstructural gradient existing in this material introduce additional complication in understanding the mechanisms for superplastic deformation and has resulted in a debate about the role of dislocation activity. This has necessitated a more detailed microstructural study, especially texture, than that is commonly required to understand the deformation mechanism in other superplastic materials. Attempt has been made in this investigation to achieve this by means of microstructural characterization of specimens deformed in ten ion by using optical microscopy, TEM, SEM and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The microstructural characterization of the as-received material showed that there were three distinct layers in the cross-section of the sheet. Pancake grains in the center layer of about 1/3 thickness with brass-type texture, and nearly equiaxed grains on either side of it of about 1/3 thickness with copper texture. Tensile tests were conducted over a temperature range of $25{-}570\sp\circ$C and a strain rate range of $\rm 1 \times 10\sp{-4}{-}1 \times 10\sp{-2}/s.$ Optimum superplastic conditions were found in a temperature range of 500-530$\sp\circ$C and in a strain rate range of $\rm 1 \times 10\sp{-4}{-}1 \times 10\sp{-3}/s.$ These deformation conditions yielded the maximum value of strain rate sensitivity index $\rm(m \approx 0.5)$ and the minimum value of instability parameter (I). During superplastic deformation, there occurred grain growth, texture weakening and change in grain shape. The disappearance of initial microstructural gradient occurred at a strain of about 1.0. The relationship between grain size (d) and strain $(\varepsilon)$ could be expressed as $\rm d\propto\varepsilon\sp{q}, $ with the value of exponent q ranging from 0.21-0.44 depending on the test temperature. Book excerpt: PREFACE This book offers readers a fairly comprehensive discussion of the hot working of aluminum and aluminum alloys. It is intended to provide an explanation of the possible microstructural developments that can occur with hot deformation of a variety of alloys and the kind of mechanical properties that can be anticipated. The microstructures that evolve with torsion, compression, extrusion and rolling are presented based on extensive analysis from polarized light optical microscopy (POM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD) scanning electron-microscopy with electron backscatter imaging (SEM-EBSD) and orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). The microstructural analysis leads to detailed explanations of dynamic recovery (DRV), static recovery (SRV), discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (dDRX), discontinuous static recrystallization (dSRX), grain defining dynamic recovery (gDRV) (formerly geometric dynamic recrystallization gDRX) and continuous dynamic recrystallization involving a single phase (cDRX/1-phase) and multiple phases, (cDRX/2-phase). Hot working is carefully explained in the context of other elevated temperature phenomena, some of which overlap hot working. These include creep, superplasticity, cold working and annealing. Creep plasticity occurs at both warm and hot working temperatures, but is usually associated with lower strain-rates and relatively small strains. On the other hand superplasticity involves high tensile strains at similar temperatures, but lower strain rates than utilized in hot working--
