Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steels: Structure and Properties, Fourth Edition is an essential text and reference, providing indispensable foundational content for researchers, metallurgists, and engineers in industry and academia. The book provides inspiring content for undergraduates, yet has a depth that makes it useful to researchers. Steels represent the most used metallic material, possessing a wide range of structures and properties. By examining the properties of steels in conjunction with structure, this book provides a valuable description of the development and behavior of these materials—the very foundation of their widespread use. The new edition has been thoroughly updated, with expanded content and improved organization, yet it retains its clear writing style, extensive bibliographies, and real-life examples. Contains a new chapter on nanostructured steels, with new content integrated into an existing chapter to describe the physical metallurgy of coatings, surface treatments, and multivariate high-performance steels Includes derivations with important equations so that students from a broad range of subjects can appreciate the issues without being bogged down in mathematics Presents new micrographs and figures that reflect the resolution and capabilities of modern instruments

Book excerpt: "The process parameters that affect the anisotropy of mechanical properties of two Nb microalloyed linepipe steels (grades X-70 and X-80) were examined by controlled rolling and accelerated cooling on a pilot mill. The rolling schedules were first simulated by multi-pass torsion testing so as to determine the critical temperatures, such as T$ sb{ rm nr}$ and Ar$ sb3.$ Using the torsion test results, two finish rolling temperatures were chosen so as to be above and below the A$ sb3$ (in the $ gamma$ + $ alpha$ region). Two reheat temperatures were selected to study the effect of prior austenite grain size. The properties of air cooled samples are compared with those of specimens cooled at two different rates; in each case, cooling was interrupted at one of three different temperatures. The textures were measured by x-ray diffractometry and are presented in the form of ODF plots and skeleton lines. The yield strengths were measured by carrying out tensile tests along directions inclined at increasing angles to the rolling direction." --

Book excerpt: The microstructures of both martensite and bainite, although sharing some common features, depict a plethora of subtle differences that made them unique when studied in further detail. Tailoring the final properties of a microstructure based on one or the other as well as in combination with others and exploring more sophisticated concepts, such as Q&P and nanostructured bainite, are the topics which are the focus of research around the world. In understanding the key microstructural parameters controlling the final properties as well as definition of adequate process parameters to attain the desired microstructures requires that a proper understanding of the mechanism ruling their transformation and a detailed characterization first be acheived. The development of new and powerful scientific techniques and equipment (EBSD, APT, HRTEM, etc.) allow us to gain fundamental insights that help to establish some of the principles by which those microstructures are known. The developments accompanying such findings lead to further developments and intensive research providing the required metallurgical support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steels remain the most widely used metallic materials. By examining the mechanical properties of steels in conjunction with microstructure the first edition gave a clear description of the development and behaviour of these materials - the very foundation of their widespread use. This new edition more explicitly links this theory with applications whilst retaining the style and purpose of the original. The text is updated throughout and includes three new chapters on acicular ferrite; the control of microstructures during welding; and a further chapter on the modelling of steel microstructure to achieve optimum performance. Extensive bibliographies are also included. Steel metallurgists in both industry and academia will find this book invaluable. * A comprehensive introduction to the microstructure and properties of steels. * Clearly written and well illustrated. * Extensive bibliographies.

Book excerpt: Thermomechanical Processing of High-Strength Low-Alloy Steels considers some advanced techniques and metallurgical bases for controlled-rolling. This book contains 12 chapters. In Chapter 1, the purpose of thermomechanical processing and historical survey is described, while in Chapter 2, the kinetics of phase transformations and refinement of grain size in steels are elaborated. The techniques and metallurgical bases for controlled-rolling in the recrystallization, non-recrystallization, and (? + y) regions are reviewed in Chapters 3 to 5. Chapters 6 and 7 discuss the deformation resistance during hot-rolling and restoration processes. The phase transformations during cooling following hot-rolling are mentioned in Chapter 8, followed by a summarization of the effects of alloying elements in Chapter 9. Chapters 10 and 11 deal with the mechanical properties of controlled-rolled steel and prediction and control of microstructure and properties by thermomechanical processes. The problems faced and possibilities for future developments are stated in the last chapter. This publication is recommended for physicists, metallurgists, and researchers concerned with controlled-rolling, including non-specialists who have some knowledge of metallurgy.
