Book excerpt: At the optimum condition and heating the cathode to 75 degrees Celsius, a sensitivity of approximately 1.8 mV/mM for cesium was achieved. Another interesting observation was that the higher-mass ions such as cesium and iodide resulted in larger signals compared to lower-mass ions such as sodium (approximately 10:1 ratio). It was concluded that this was mainly due to the fact that more massive ions experience less scattering at the skimmer orifice. This discrimination between higher-mass and lower-mass ions was reduced by using a larger skimmer orifice (Cs[superscript +] : Na[superscript +] = 2:1). Finally, an aerosol stream was generated by laser ablation of solids in an external cell. The ablation lasers were a power-chip Nd:YAG laser and a Q-switched, flashlamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser. The samples investigated were aluminum, stainless steel, brass, bismuth alloy, ceramic and pressed pellets of inorganic salts. The effects of laser pulse frequency, energy and discharge potential on particle ionization were studied. Due to better signal stability and intensities, the laser ablation was found to be a more suitable method for aerosol generation when glow discharge is the ion source.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace Analysis by Mass Spectrometry deals with trace analysis of solids and liquids by mass spectrometric techniques. Topics include the physics and techniques of electrical discharge ion sources, transmission of ions through double focusing mass spectrometers, and detection and measurement of ions by ion-sensitive plates. The ion sources used are principally electrical discharge type sources. This book is comprised of 14 chapters. The first several chapters focus on the basic physics of electrical discharge ion sources, double focusing mass spectrometry, and the measurement of arrays of mass resolved ion beams by electrical detection methods and with ion sensitive emulsions. The discussion then shifts to the problem of obtaining the chemical composition of the recorded mass resolved ion sample and relating this composition to that of the original sample. The chapters that follow describe specific techniques for analyzing special samples such as insulators, powders, microsamples, biological materials, reactive and low melting point substances, radioactive materials, and gases in solids. The remaining chapters include the use of laser ion sources in the analysis of solids and the analysis of surfaces particularly with sputter ion sources. This book will be of interest to students and practitioners of physics and chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry (IDMS) has become an essential tool in research laboratories and is increasingly used in routine analysis labs (including environmental, food safety and clinical applications). This is the first textbook to present a comprehensive and instructive view of the theory and applications of this growing technique. The main objective of this book is to cover the theory and applications of Isotope Dilution in Analytical Chemistry. The scope is comprehensive to include elemental analysis, speciation analysis, organic analysis and biochemical and clinical analysis together with applications in metabolism studies and traceability of goods. Until now there have been no books published with the same general scope (only book chapters on particular applications). This is a textbook focused at post-graduate level covering the basic knowledge required for doctoral studies in this field. Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry will also outline practical applications of interest for routine testing laboratories where isotope dilution procedures are implemented or can be implemented in the future. This unique book covers all the theoretical and practical aspects of Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry (IDMS). Due to the increasing application of IDMS in many research laboratories and the increasing implementation of IDMS methodologies in routine testing laboratories, scientists in industry and working in or affiliated to this area will this an invaluable source of information. Concerning the theoretical aspects, the authors present a uniform theoretical background which grows from previous developments in Organic, Speciation and Elemental analysis both in their own laboratory and in other laboratories around the world. This general approach will be simpler and will also include new emerging fields such as quantitative proteomics and metabolism studies.
