Book excerpt: Since its discovery, the one atom thick material graphene has been at the centre of growing interest in two-dimensional materials. Due to its exceptional properties, graphene is a rich topic to explore by physicists, chemists, engineers and materials scientists. In addition to its use in the fundamental research, graphene is also a promising candidate for future electronics, photonics and energy storage devices. The project presented in this thesis was carried out to explore the structure of suspended graphene in particular in order to probe the metal-graphene interaction via Transmission Electron Microscopy, as most graphene applications require interfacing with metals. As the work was based on free standing graphene, graphene layers obtained by mechanical cleavage or growth on a substrate were transferred onto TEM-grids. Therefore, fabrication, suspended sample preparation and identification of graphene layers were first discussed for a better understanding of how to obtain high quality graphene, as this was essential for the rest of the project. Structural, topographic and chemical analysis of pristine suspended graphene layers were investigated in detail via Transmission Electron Microscopy and Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy. The latter technique was also employed for graphene on a substrate along with establishing annealing conditions for residue free graphene. Metal deposited suspended graphene layers were then investigated in the electron microscopes. Different metal behaviours were observed on the graphene surfaces for the same amount of metal evaporation. Generally, metals interact only weakly with graphene as they are not observed on clean (residue free) parts and are mainly clustered. On the other hand, graphene etching has been observed in the presence of metals. The etching was initiated with graphene vacancy formation as a result of the interaction between metal and carbon atoms on clean graphene. Once a vacancy was created, a hole quickly formed and eventually the graphene layers were destroyed. However, those holes created by metals were healed spontaneously either by non-hexagonal or perfect hexagonal rings. The possible etching and healing mechanisms of the suspended graphene were also discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) provides three-dimensional real- space images of surfaces at high spatial resolution. When the surface is flat and clean, even atoms can be imaged. Its extreme usefulness has led it to near instantaneous acceptance as a characterization tool. This book covers fundamental concepts of STM operation, image interpretation, instrumentation, and techniques for various applications. It als contains advanced treatments of theory and spectroscopy. Surface physicists, electrochemists, materials scientists, and other scientists who see a use for STM will find the depth of coverage and accompanying reference lists in this book essential to their work. In addition, those who wish to add the capabilities of probe microscopy to their operations, such as microscopists and quality control engineers, will find the basic information in this book.

It presents pioneering findings on the controlled growth of graphene and graphene-based heterostructures, as well as scanning tunneling microscopy/scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STM/STS) studies on their electronic structures. The thesis primarily investigates two classes of graphene-based systems: (i) twisted bilayer graphene, which was synthesized on Rh substrates and manifests van Hove singularities near Fermi Level, and (ii) in-plane h-BN-G heterostructures, which were controllably synthesized in an ultrahigh vacuum chamber and demonstrate intriguing electronic properties on the interface. In short, the thesis offers revealing insights into the energy band engineering of graphene-based nanomaterials, which will greatly facilitate future graphene applications.

Book excerpt: Due to its unique properties, graphene oxide has become one of the most studied materials of the last decade and a great variety of applications have been reported in areas such as sensors, catalysis and biomedical applications. This comprehensive volume systematically describes the fundamental aspects and applications of graphene oxide. The book is designed as an introduction to the topic, so each chapter begins with a discussion on fundamental concepts, then proceeds to review and summarize recent advances in the field. Divided into two parts, the first part covers fundamental aspects of graphene oxide and includes chapters on formation and chemical structure, characterization methods, reduction methods, rheology and optical properties of graphene oxide solutions. Part Two covers numerous graphene oxide applications including field effect transistors, transparent conductive films, sensors, energy harvesting and storage, membranes, composite materials, catalysis and biomedical applications. In each case the differences and advantages of graphene oxide over its non-oxidised counterpart are discussed. The book concludes with a chapter on the challenges of industrial-scale graphene oxide production. Graphene Oxide: Fundamentals and Applications is a valuable reference for academic researchers, and industry scientists interested in graphene oxide, graphene and other carbon materials.

Book excerpt: In order to better understand the perturbation of the physical and electronic structure of graphene monolayers and bilayers due to interactions with the supporting substrate, we have utilized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) to probe the graphene-substrate interaction for graphene on several different semiconducting substrates in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). The Si(100) 0́3 2©71:H, GaAs(110), InAs(110), and Si(111) 0́3 7©77 surfaces used in this study were prepared in the UHV-STM chamber. We deposited monolayer and bilayer graphene features on the surfaces through a dry contact transfer (DCT) technique in the UHV system. The graphene-substrate interaction for the surfaces used in this study varied from quite inert and non-perturbing for the Si(100) 0́3 2©71:H surface to highly disruptive and strongly interacting for the Si(111) 0́3 7©77 surface. Graphene monolayer features on the GaAs(110), InAs(110), and Si(111) 0́3 7©77 surfaces exhibit a semi-transparency effect wherein the atomic structure of the substrate beneath the graphene is clearly resolved through the graphene monolayer. Bilayer graphene features on the GaAs(110) and InAs(110) surfaces do not show this behavior; however, bilayer graphene features on the Si(111) 0́3 7©77 surface do show the same effect. STM scans of the features at varying tip-sample biases reveal the different graphene-substrate interactions for the GaAs(110) and InAs(110) surfaces and the Si(111) 0́3 7©77 surface. STS measurements of monolayer graphene quantum dots on the Si(100) 0́3 2©71:H surface show an energy band gap with a scaling inversely proportional to the average lateral dimension of the features. STS measurements of graphene on the Si(111) 0́3 7©77 surface show metallic behavior, which is expected for the feature sizes studied on this surface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the two-dimensional (2D) lattice of graphene, consisting of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice, the charge carriers are described by a Dirac-Weyl Hamiltonian. Seeking to understand their unique nature, this thesis presents results of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) experiments at low temperatures and in magnetic fi eld. These techniques give access, down to atomic scales, to structural information as well as to the electronic properties of graphene. The main findings include the observation of quantized Landau levels (LL) in the presence of magnetic field, their dependence on carrier density and e ffects of charged impurities and other disorder on the LL spectrum. Twisting graphene layers away from the equilibrium Bernal stacking leads to the formation of Moir e patterns that signi ficantly alter the electronic properties of graphene stacks. The second part of the thesis discusses the eff ects of such rotations on the electronic properties as a function of twist angle.
