The publication of this dictionary encompassing the terminology of all types of microscopes and of various aspects of microtechnique fills a major communications gap in an area of scientific research and instrumentation that has evolved over more than 350 years. The reader will discover all the key concepts linked to optical, electron, phase-contrast, polarizing, and other types of microscopes, as well as many terms related to the preparation of specimens for examination under the microscope, including microtomy, staining, and fixation.Translators and terminologists will find in this dictionary such useful features as definitions, synonyms, cross references, and bibliographic sources, a separate listing of acronyms and abbreviations, and French and German indexes. As a multilingual tool, this dictionary contains features that language specialists have come to expect: definitions and bibliographic sources. As a technical work, it brings order

Book Synopsis Some Biological Techniques in Electron Microscopy by : D.F. Parsons
Download or read book Some Biological Techniques in Electron Microscopy written by D.F. Parsons and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some Biological Techniques in Electron Microscopy discusses the problems that hinder or prevent progress in biological electron microscopy. This book explores the great potential of electron microscope for solving several pressing medical and biological research problems. Organized into five chapters, this book starts with an overview of the primary goal of biological electron microscopy, which is the visualization of atoms in biological molecules and structures. This text proceeds with a discussion of the freezing methods of electron microscopy in which some of the artifacts producing steps of environmental techniques are eliminated. Other chapters consider the objective of electron microscopy to resolve successively small objects, in the limiting instance, single atoms in amorphous structures. The final chapter deals with processing tissues for electron microscopy wherein temperature, agitation, pressure, and humidity can be controlled throughout the operation. Biologists, biophysicists, physicists, electron microscopists, and medical researchers will find this book extremely useful.

Download or read book Straminipilous Fungi written by M.W. Dick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straminipilous Fungi presents a critical comparative review of the morphology and ultrastructure, morphogenesis, cytology, molecular biology and evolution of the biflagellate fungi. These organisms encompass the fungi formerly called oomycetes; taxonomically related heterotrophs studied by mycologists; plasmodiophorids and other heterotrophs. Appropriate comparisons are made with chromophyte algae, marine heterotrophs and chytridiaceous fungi. Little-known taxa which have been referred to the various orders of flagellate fungi are also listed together with citations. A new hierarchical classification is presented which is supported by systematic accounts and synoptic keys. Dichotomous keys based on habitat and habit are given to all known species of lagenidiaceous fungi, labyrinthulids and plasmodiophorids. A unique `one stop' reference resource for plant pathologists is provided by the binominal lists, including host-related lists for the downy mildews. The book, including ca 4000 references, is a major text for post-graduate and research workers, particularly freshwater and marine biologists, soil ecologists and plant pathologists.
Book Synopsis Basic and Applied Aspects of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss by : Richard J. Salvi
Download or read book Basic and Applied Aspects of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss written by Richard J. Salvi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1985, NATO sponsored an Advanced Study WOl'kshop entitled, "Noise-Induced Hearing Loss: Basic and Applied Aspects." Tne meeting was held in a mountain retreat near Lucca, Italy and was attended by scientists, clinicians, and public officials from 12 countries. This was the third in a series of such conferences organized by the authors. The first two were supported by the United States National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health; their proceedings were published as "The Effects of Noise on Hearing" in 1976 and "New Perspectives on Noise-Induced Hearing Loss" in 1982. The Organizing Committee approached NATO because it was felt that the problem of noise was common to all industrialized countries and was an especially serious problem for the military. Thus, the NATO sponsorship and the Italian site of the meeting were part of the Organizing Committee's plan to obtain an international and thorough repr'esentation on the problem of noise-induced hearing loss. The NATO meeting and proceedings followed the format of the previous two symposia with an initial focus on the anatomical and physiological disturbances resulting from noise-induced hearing loss. This was followed by sections devoted to studies of a more applied nature involving general auditory performance in noise, issues associated with the establishment of noise-exposure criteria, nonauditory effects of noise, and the interaction of noise with other agents.
Book Synopsis Diffraction and Imaging Techniques in Material Science P2 by : S Amelinckx
Download or read book Diffraction and Imaging Techniques in Material Science P2 written by S Amelinckx and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diffraction and Imaging Techniques in Material Science reviews recent developments in diffraction and imaging techniques used in the study of materials. It discusses advances in high-voltage electron microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray and neutron diffraction, X-ray topography, mirror electron microscopy, and field emission microscopy. Organized into five parts encompassing nine chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the dynamical theory of the diffraction of high-energy electrons in crystals and methodically introduces the reader to dynamical diffraction in perfect and imperfect crystals, inelastic scattering of electrons in crystals, and X-ray production. It then explores back scattering effects, the technical features of high-voltage electron microscopes, and surface characterization by LEED. Other chapters focus on the kinematical theory of X-ray diffraction, techniques and interpretation in X-ray topography, and interpretation of the contrast of the images of defects on X-ray topographs. The book also describes theory and applications of mirror electron microscopy, surface studies by field emission of electrons, field ionization and field evaporation, and gas-surface interactions before concluding with a discussion on lattice imperfections. Scientists and students taking courses on diffraction and solid-state electron microscopy will benefit from this book.
