Book excerpt: Real time observations in the scanning electron microscope have delineated the details of the fracture processes that result in mode I and mode II delamination of composite materials. These observations give clear explanation of why GII/GIC ratio for brittle materials is three times that for ductile materials. These in situ observations of fracture also indicate that distinctively different damage zone develops ahead of growing cracks for mode I and mode II delamination. Two techniques have been developed to measure the strain field around a crack tip. Stero imaging and direct measurement of distortion of a fine array of dots placed on the surface. Both are effective in measuring the strain field around a crack tip. A surprising result which emerged from these measurements is that the local strain to failure at the crack tip is much greater than the elongation measured in a tensile test (up to six times as high). A linear, orthotropic finite element code has been used to calculate the stress fields around the crack tip for mode I and mode II loading. A J-integral approach for mode I has been used to investigate the delamination of multi directional composites. Initial results using this approach look very promising for characterizing systems which can not be characterized with conventional analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residual stresses are a common phenomenon in composite materials. They can either add to or significantly reduce material strength. Because of the increasing demand for high-strength, light-weight materials such as composites and their wide range of applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, in civil infrastructure and in sporting applications, it is critical that the residual stresses of composite materials are understood and measured correctly. The first part of this important book reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses. Various mathematical (analytical and numerical) methods for calculation of residual stresses in composite materials are also presented. Chapters in the first section of the book discuss the simulated hole drilling method, the slitting/crack compliance method, measuring residual stresses in homogeneous and composite glass materials using photoelastic techniques, and modeling residual stresses in composite materials. The second part of the book discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and a range of other types of composites. Moreover, the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses is discussed. Residual stresses in composite materials provides a comprehensive overview of this important topic, and is an invaluable reference text for both academics and professionals working in the mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace, automotive, marine and sporting industries. Reviews destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for measuring residual stresses Discusses residual stresses in polymer matrix, metal-matrix and other types of composite Considers the addition of nanoparticles to the matrix of polymeric composites as a new technique for reduction of residual stresses

Book excerpt: The mode II delamination fracture toughness of a ductile and a brittle unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite has been studied using the end-notched flexure (ENF) test and the end-loaded split laminate (ELS) test. The stress field in the vicinity of the crack tip of a split laminate beam under mode I and mode II (ELS test) conditions has been determined by means of a finite-element analysis. Also, the micromechanics of mode II fracture have been studied during in situ and postmortem observations of the fracture process. Both the ENF and ELS tests give similar values for GIIc. However, because elastic material behavior is assumed in the analysis, the GIIc results for a ductile composite are somewhat uncertain because permanent deformation is observed. The ELS test provides a pure shear stress state in the vicinity of the crack tip. The formation of hackles in composites made with brittle resins provides a more tortuous path for the crack leading to an increased resistance to delamination under mode II conditions compared to mode I. However, extensive resin deformation and yielding play a more significant role in the fracture resistance for mode II loading of composites made using a rubber-toughened epoxy.

Book excerpt: An investigation was performed to study the delamination propagation induced by matrix cracking in graphite/epoxy laminated composite beams subjected to transverse concentrated loading. The major focus of the study was to fundamentally understand the interaction between matrix cracking and delamination propagation in laminated composites resulting from transverse loadings. A nonlinear finite element analysis combined with a failure criterion and fracture mechanics was developed for modeling the damage initiation and propagation in composite beams subjected to a concentrated line load. A contact analysis based on the Lagrange multiplier technique was also adopted for modeling the contactslip condition of delamination and matrix crack surfaces during loading. Results of the calculations based on the analysis were compared favorably with the existing data and the data generated during the investigation.

Book excerpt: The growth of triangular-shaped delaminations bordered by matrix cracks, defined herein as "compound delaminations", occurring at the free edges of [±15n]s and [±15n0n]s laminates in static tensile loading was investigated. This triangular compound delamination is the first macroscopic damage observed. Failure of the laminates occurs by unstable growth of these delaminations. The experimental study involved the manufacture of specimens with Teflon implants to create an initial delamination configuration with the delamination oriented at 90° to the matrix crack. The delamination front was monitored using strain gages and X-ray radiographs. Growth was observed to occur at the delamination front near the free edge region with no growth at the matrix crack front resulting in the same configuration as observed in originally unflawed specimens. A three-dimensional displacement-based finite element model of the delaminated region was created and the equivalent domain integral was used to determine the energy release rate at the delamination and matrix crack fronts. The energy release rate was predicted to be highest at the intersection of the delamination and the free edge and was lowest at the intersection of the delamination and the matrix crack. The peak energy release rate predicted at the matrix crack front was smaller than that at the delamination front. Growth was simulated in the model by tilting the delamination front about the matrix crack front. The maximum energy release rate along the delamination dropped and became more uniform as the delamination was tilted. These results indicate that the stable delamination configuration observed is formed by the growth of the delamination front at the free edge region in regions of high energy release rate in preference to the growth of the matrix crack resulting in a curved delamination contour. The overall decrease in energy release rate associated with this delamination growth indicates that the resulting curved delamination is a more stable configuration. The failure process in these specimens involves the formation of these stable delaminations, followed by secondary cracking in the plies adjacent to the delamination, and lastly final failure via unstable growth of the entire triangular region to the ends of the specimen.

Book excerpt: The objective of this paper is to evaluate various experimental techniques and analysis methods for the characterization of interlaminar fracture toughness, and to determine the effects of strain rate on that property for a graphite/epoxy composite. Mode I interlaminar fracture was investigated by means of a double-cantilever beam (DCB) specimen for AS-4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy. Hinged tabs were used to insure unrestrained rotation at the free ends. Specimens were loaded at quasi-static deflection rates of up to 8.5 mm/s (20 in./min) corresponding to crack extension rates of over 51 mm/s (2 in./s). Crack extension was monitored by means of strain gages mounted on the surface of the specimen, or a conductive-paint circuit attached to the edge of the DCB specimen. Continuous records were obtained of load, deflection, and crack extension for determination of the strain energy release rate. The latter was expressed as a power law of the crack extension velocity. Results indicate that the strain energy release rate increases with crack velocity by up to 28% for the range of rates considered here.
