Fatigue crack growth rates for the composite exceed those of the unreinforced alloy, except that the threshold stress intensity for growth is higher for the composite. Fracture toughness of the composite is about 9 square root of M cubed compared to a (reported) value of 29 square root of M cubed for the unreinforced alloy. The contributions to fracture toughness from work done within the plastic zone and in formation of the void sheet have been computed using analytical models. Fracture toughness is shown to result almost entirely from work done within the plastic zone of the growing crack. The matrix microstructure and the particulate characteristics are found to account for the elastic and fracture properties of this composite.

While significant advances in processing technology have made the fabrication of such hybrid materials more of an economic reality, their widespread use in airframes or other critical structures has in general been limited by serious deficiencies in particular mechanical properties, such as ductility, toughness and fatigue. This problem is often compounded by the lack of fundamental studies which provide a rational basis for the underlying sources of crack-propagation resistance in these materials, and in particular which define the critical role of composite microstructure. The limited use of such brittle materials to date has primarily been attributed to their inherently low toughness and lack of defect tolerance. Book excerpt: An experimental study was conducted to examine the effects of high temperature/high frequency loading on the crack growth behavior in titanium composites. Fatigue crack growth tests were performed on the unidirectional SM 1240/TIMETAL-21S composite in air environment at three different temperatures: 24, 500, and 650?gC with a loading frequency of 10 Hz and a stress ratio of 0.1. Tests were also carried out in vacuum and on aged specimens. In all the tests, the crack length was measured continuously while the crack opening displacement (COD) was measured at discrete positions along the crack length. Results show that, at all temperatures, the crack progresses in two sequential stages; a stage in which the crack growth rate decreases as the crack length increases followed by a stage characterized by an accelerated crack growth rate. The first stage corresponds to a crack-bridging condition and is the focus of the analysis in this paper. In additional to COD measurements, the microstructural features associated with the fracture process during this stage was examined by scanning electron microscopy with emphasis being placed on the matrix crack morphology, debonding location, temperature, and environmental influences on the fiber coatings. An analytical procedure, employing concepts of the theory of fracture mechanics and micromechanics analysis of the stress state along bridging fibers, was applied in order to calculate the fiber-bridging stress, the frictional shear stress, and the effective stress intensity factor. Results of this work suggest that the fiber-bridging stress and the frictional shear stress are variables along the crack length and are test temperature dependents. Furthermore, it was concluded that both the crack-tip opening displacement and the effective stress intensity factor can be used as measurements of the crack-tip driving force in the crack-bridging stage. Based on the experimental and analytical results collected in this study, a bridging damage mechanism under the loading condition specified here is suggested. This mechanism argues that the effect of temperature on the high frequency crack growth process is established through the temperature-related modification of the frictional shear stress and the resulting adjustment of the internal stress state in the debonded regions of the bridging fibers.

Book excerpt: It is reasonably well accepted that the standard procedures developed for isotropic homogeneous metals using linear elastic fracture mechanics models are not appropriate for either continuously or discontinuously reinforced metal matrix composites. For example, the ASTM plane strain fracture toughness test methods typically give widely different values of fracture toughness depending on the particular test specimen geometry as well as the fiber orientation. For unidirectional boron/aluminum composites one finds approximately a factor of two difference between the measured values of fracture toughness obtained from a center-notched test coupon and that given by a compact tension specimen. In particular for unidirectional composites, and to a slightly lesser degree for angle ply laminates, the dominant controlling mechanism for this behavior is matrix plasticity. A secondary toughening mechanism, resulting from the matrix plasticity, is stable transverse fiber failure. The present paper will focus on both the influence of the large plastic zone at the end of the notch and on the constraint that the fibers impose on the shape of this zone, as well as the transverse crack growth. First, a review of some particular experimental studies and methods of analysis for predicting crack growth and fracture of notched unidirectional metal matrix composites is given. Next, two mechanistic models for unidirectional composites with damage are presented. The first is an improved shear lag model that accounts for both of the above damage modes, and the second describes a recent extension of the shear lag concept in an attempt to include transverse stresses. A related finite width laminate model is then discussed, and it is indicated that an isotropic finite width correction factor is reasonably accurate for most center-notched test coupons.
