Microfinance has been hotly debated by ever-colliding camps of ardent supporters, who believe that microfinance addresses credit market failures and provides a durable answer to the problem of the poverty, and staunch critics, who argue that lending by microfinance institutions is wasteful, and the interest rates are too high. To bring further insight into this important debate, this book presents comprehensive historical, political, and economic perspectives on the latest issues in microfinance. An impressive array of scholars and practitioners build a framework for thinking about regulation to drive sustainable, inclusive development. With case studies of programs in India, Ghana, and Bangladesh, and examinations of the effects of gender and religion on financial decision-making, this comprehensive collection offers something valuable to scholars, policymakers, and practitioners—anyone with a vested interest in promoting innovation in microfinance.

Book excerpt: Following the positive impact of microfinance on poverty reduction, women empowerment, and microenterprise development in some countries in Asia and Africa, a huge amount of time has been devoted by researchers to understanding how this concept can be used as a catalyst for transforming and sustaining the economies of developing and emerging countries. Though there are a few books on the role of microfinance in reducing poverty in developing countries across world, there is no specific book that explores the role of microfinance in transforming and sustaining economies of developing and emerging countries. Transforming Economies Through Microfinance in Developing Nations seeks to explore how the provision of microfinance to individuals and groups can contribute to the economic transformation and sustainability of the economies of developing and emerging countries. Covering key topics such as climate change, entrepreneurship, and rural development, this reference work is ideal for government officials, entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers, academicians, practitioners, scholars, instructors, and students.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: A2, University of Limerick (Kemmy Business School), course: MSc in Financial Services, language: English, abstract: This thesis examines the effectiveness of microfinance in the socio-economic development with the major focus on poverty reduction and gender equality (in the sense of women empowerment) in Northern part of India. The purpose of this research is to measure the effectiveness of microfinance in the sense of socio-economic development in the Northern part of India. The aim has been accomplished by using the methods of statistical analysis and through the examination of primary and secondary data. The methods of data analysis that were employed in the research incorporated chi-square tests, independent sample t-tests and binary logistic regressions. The data has been analysed based on the survey of 100 respondents, who were below nationally defined poverty line in Lucknow (Major metropolitan city of North India) and areas nearby. The survey data was divided into two parts i.e. 60% of the respondents were the non-microfinance respondents and remaining 40% were the microfinance recipients. Recommendations regarding the research have been based on the findings from the analysis. Findings of the study have shown that young entrepreneurs who are below poverty line are more likely to apply for the micro loan. This has been explained by the binary logistic regression analysis of the whole sample. Further, the findings show that microfinance has very low outreach in North India. This has been explained by the data from the MIX market, level of awareness of microfinance among the non-microfinance respondents and the case study of Nat Purva Village near Lucknow. Furthermore, the results disclosed that microfinance recipients face difficulty while applying to micro loan due to which they also face difficulty in paying the loan amount with interest back. This has been explained by the chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis of the responses from the microfinance recipients. However, overall impact of microfinance on both poverty reduction and gender equality is turned out to be positive. This has been explained by MFI’s major focus on women entrepreneurs, changes in social and economic conditions of the recipients after taking the micro loan, expenditure of the recipients on education of children, recipient’s recommendations regarding micro loan and the ability of recipients to apply for the micro loan again.

However, this concept needs to be expanded to ensure its successful application for achieving longer-term economic growth and sustainability in developing countries, particularly in parts of the world such as Africa. As such, further research into the relationship between microfinance and sustainable development in developing regions is required to fully understand the opportunities for effective use of microfinance for poverty reduction and economic development. Microfinance and Sustainable Development in Africa examines the complex relationship between receipt of microfinance, poverty reduction, economic growth, and microbusiness development, focusing on the provision of small credit facilities as a driver of sustainable development in Africa. Its coverage of topics such as microbusiness, social finance, and sustainable development make this book an ideal reference source for academicians, researchers, government officials, policymakers, organizations, managers, instructors, and students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once praised as a panacea to overcome poverty microfinance has had to face harsh criticism because of painful failures and unfulfilled expectations. Still many people in particular in rural regions do not have any access to formal financial services, many microfinance institutions are weak, and others rather exploit their clients driving them into over indebtedness than helping them out of poverty. What should microfinance achieve? Can it help to build up inclusive financial systems allowing access to basic financial services for everybody? The historic templates for this book are the German Sparkassen and Cooperative banks that have a strong track record of development and growth spanning over 200 years. For obvious reasons their results cannot be transferred directly into specific solution options to today's challenges in developing countries. Nevertheless the coming into existence of Sparkassen and Cooperative banks can well be seen as part of a period of revolutionary developments in the European economic and social landscape, which can be viewed as analogous to the transformation that emerging economies are undergoing today. While Europe faced dramatically changing living conditions during the period of industrialization these newly creatd banks made change possible by unequivocally including the lower class population in the transformationby providing access to savings and loans. And it is this is parallel - even in the face of the many differences - which is why their development and success deserves careful consideration today. The authors' approach differsfrom other explorations by specifically adopting an interdisciplinary strategy. They take into account past developments as well as current global ones from a historical, social science and economic point of view. Analysis and the interpretation of data is supported by case studies to illustrate their considerations. The authors identify general parameters both for failure and for success and also indicate how to optimize existing potentials - both for institutions and policy makers. As a result of this interdisciplinary work the authors advance an inclusive stylised facts based model. The will to build up institutions, to adhere to corporate social responsibility and creating conducive legal frameworks form the basic conditions for success. More specifically, the guiding principles of these successful business models are a fair savings and credit policy, the promotion of capital transfers without reference to class and gender, a focus on business activities in a well defined region, decentralized organizational structures combined with national networks which avoid regional capital drains and the securing of economies of scale and scope. Llast but not least is the centrality of objectives beyond that of the sheer maximisation of profits.

The microfinance revolution is delivering financial services to the economically active poor on a large scale through competing, financially self-sufficient institutions. In a few countries this has already happened; in others it is under way. The emerging microfinance industry has profound implications for social and economic development. For the first time in history, capital is well on its way to being democratized. 'The Microfinance Revolution', in three volumes, is aimed at a diverse readership - economists, bankers, policymakers, donors, and social scientists; microfinance practitioners and specialists in local finance and rural and urban development; and members of the general public interested in development. This first volume, 'Sustainable Finance for the Poor', focuses on the shift from government- and donor-subsidized credit systems to self-sufficient microfinance institutions providing voluntary savings and credit services.

The book will serve as a good reference point for future debate in these areas. Microfinance Insights In 2006 the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Muhammad Yunus for his work on microfinance, dramatically changing attitudes towards capital markets. Suresh Sundaresan has assembled an impressive set of scholars and practitioners in this book to bring together recent practical innovations and policy questions in the realm of microfinance. The contributions emphasize practical solutions to problems facing the field by examining capital markets, providing a framework for thinking about regulation, and raising questions about gender empowerment. They examine recent developments in the field, research findings, and the challenges that lie ahead. This book takes a solid step toward a systematic analysis of the implications of microfinance for the role and regulation of capital markets. The authors address integration of capital markets with microfinance, technological innovations such as the use of mobile phone technology, the consequences of women s access to micro-loan borrowings, and the regulatory challenges and opportunities emerging as the landscape of microfinance dramatically evolves. Practitioners, policy makers, and academics in the fields of developmental economics, finance, gender studies and public and development policy will enjoy this analytically rigorous work.
