Book excerpt: Principles of Physiological Measurement examines the basic principles underlying the techniques and instruments used in making measurements, including tracer methods and compartmental analysis. It describes measurements of oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH, ammonia, and miscellaneous gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen. The book also describes the general concepts of electrical transduction, amplification, and recording. Organized into 15 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of some fundamental concepts of measurement, including basic gas and solution concepts, electronics relevant to measurement methods, and error in designing experiments. Some chapters are dedicated to the measurement of oxygen in gases and in aqueous solutions, partial pressure measurement of carbon dioxide in liquids, measurement of intracellular pH, and measurement of ammonia in gases and in solutions. Other chapters discuss the blood gas measurement, problems of controlling the gaseous environment, and basic principles of flow, velocity, force, displacement, and pressure, along with common methods for their measurement. The final chapters deal with ions and solutions, radioisotope concepts and techniques, and tracer kinetics. This book will be of interest to natural scientists and students in physiology courses.

Investigations made at a microscopical level using various sophisticated analytical methods and using principles developed in different fields have clarified their mechanisms very much. Sometimes, very similar phenomena have been found in the mineralized tissues of completely different biological systems. Compilation and comparative investigations of such findings obtained from the many specimens systematically collected contribute a great deal to an understanding of the crucial mechanisms and significance of biominerali zation which originated in very primitive organisms and remain in advanced ones. Previously, the functional significance of mineralized tissues was considered mainly from an anatomical point of view based upon their morphological and structural features. However, the recent advance of investigations has made it possible to interpret the func tional significance of biomineralization not only from local and mechanical points of view, but also from a systemic and phylogenetic point of view. It is also well-known that biomineralization has contributed in various ways to geological and oceanographical conditions of the environment in which the organisms were living. During this process, the mechanisms of biomineralization may have evolved to maintain harmony between organisms and their environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the continued rapid expansion of neurochemical research, there has been no shortage of new developments in methodology for this third volume of Research Methods in Neurochemistry. As in previous volumes we have again tried to provide some balance in the subjects represented. The wisdom of this policy may be questioned since it can lead to delay in publica tion, but there are many approaches to the chemical study of the nervous system and a methods book needs to stand on its own as well as be part of a series. In one respect, however, the present volume departs from this policy, in that we have included two chapters on micromethods for analyzing amines and amino acids, both giving special emphasis to dansylation techniques. These chapters are complementary and we feel justified in publishing them in one volume in view of the importance of such micromethods for the study of neural systems. At the other end of the scale, particular attention may be drawn to the chapter by D. D. Gilboe and colleagues describing their remarkable procedures for studying metabolism in the isolated canine brain. We were fortunate also in persuading S. S. Oja to extend the general prin ciples of transport systems he described in Volume 2 to amino acids in brain slices. In addition, there are the usual chapters on components of neural tissues, which once again we have found convenient to divide into enzymes, macromolecules, and other constituents.

Book excerpt: Mammalian Protein Metabolism, Volume III, provides an overview of the state of knowledge on mammalian protein metabolism. It enlarges and adds depth to the picture of protein metabolism provided by Volumes I and II. The present volume covers two aspects of protein metabolism not specifically considered in the earlier parts of the treatise. First, there is a section of three chapters dealing with changes in protein metabolism during evolution and during growth and development. At its most fundamental level, this part deals in reality with an aspect of regulation of protein metabolism, since differences in metabolism between species and changes occurring during growth are both outward expressions of genetic control mechanisms that determine the form and characteristics of an animal. The other section in this volume is a survey of methods appropriate to the study of protein metabolism in mammals. This part of the work should prove of special interest to investigators who require a critical evaluation of the possibilities and limitations of methods applicable to intact animals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the completion of the first edition of this series, this editor thought that a new edition would not be warranted in less than IS, perhaps 20, years, but it seems that we live in a time in which rapid changes are the norm and findings in a field such as neurochemistry develop exponentially. The task of a future editor attempting to get a comprehensive neurochemical handbook for the year 2000 would be even less enviable, but by then information processing may be very different. The approach, the design, and the areas covered by each volume and each chapter are necessarily arbitrary, and it is likely that other editors or authors would have approached the coverage or the organization in a different manner. It is hoped, however, that readers will find the series helpful for beginning or for continuing work. There may be some overlap among the various chapters, but insisting on single coverage of an area would at times have restricted treatment to only one point of view and might have truncated and hurt the logical flow of some of the chapters.

Book excerpt: River Pollution 1: Chemical Analysis discusses methods of detecting and determining the various forms of pollution and the interpretation of results. It aims to provide a chemical background for, and supplement to, the information on analytical methods, and to review critically other methods which may be useful in certain circumstances for research, control work, and field tests. The book begins with a description of river surveys, and physical and chemical methods for determining river pollution. Separate chapters cover methods to determine the presence of dissolved oxygen, combined nitrogen, sulfur compounds, carbon dioxide, free chlorine, metallic contaminants, and carbon compounds. Subsequent chapters discuss the estimation of less important substances which may sometimes be encountered in pollution problems; and the significance of chemical and physical tests and the interpretation of the results of an analysis. This book is intended for those interested in chemical analysis as applied to river pollution problems, sewage, and trade wastes.

Book excerpt: Biomaterials science has advanced dramatically in the past 50 years with the increased cooperation between engineers chemists and biologists. Whilst previously biomaterials may have been erroneously thought to encompass dressing materials or implant structures designed to replace damaged or diseased tissue, the range of clinical applications of these materials is immense. Truly "Smart" biomaterials, which have the ability to recognise, respond to and even record their environment, now exist. The presentations in this volume reflect the true inter-disciplinary nature of biomaterials science; with contributions from polymer chemists, engineers, biologists and clinicians. The presentations show the potential of these collaborations and describe how advanced biomaterials have and are being employed not only in theraputic applications, but also increasingly in diagnosis and treatment in medical science.
