Book excerpt: Silicon chip technology; microprocessor technology; information technology; or quite simply new technology. These are some of the names representing the microelectronics revolution depending upon the audience being addressed by speaker or writer. No previous new industrial development has caused such widespread publicity and discussion amongst users and researchers as the new technology. Concern is being expressed about the effects of new technology on employment, job satisfaction, social life, leisure activities and the economics of commerce and industry. The late 70s saw many doom-laden predictions of those effects but by 1983 both management and trade unions were taking a more objective view of the social and economic impacts, and many correspondents now see the new technology as a means of opening up new industries and overcoming the effects of world recessions. The "chip" has involved the factory floor, the office, the supermarket and the home. Electronic funds transfer, electronic shopping, microelectronic domestic appliances, word processors and microprocessor-controlled machinery mean that the new technology has pervaded all aspects of social and economic life, and the developed countries are now coming to accept it as part of society as a whole. Inevitably the flood of literature on the social and economic impacts of new technology has been overwhelming. Unfortunately the quality of information and arguments propagated at conferences, in journal papers and research reports has indicated that there has been little quantifiable evidence available on the effects of these impacts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is technology? Why does it have such power in our lives? Why does it seemingly progress of its own accord, and without regard to social or environmental well-being? The quest for the essence of technology is an old one, with roots in the pre-Socratic philosophy of ancient Greece. It was then that certain thinkers first joined the ideas of technê and logos into a single worldview. The Greeks saw it as a kind of world-force, present in both the works of men and in nature itself. It was the very creative power of the cosmos. In the 20th century, German thinkers like Dessauer, Juenger, and Heidegger sought the metaphysical basis of technology, with varying success. French theologian Jacques Ellul argued persuasively that technology was an autonomous force of nature that determined all aspects of human existence, but he neglected the metaphysical underpinnings. Recent writers in the philosophy of technology have generally eschewed metaphysics altogether, preferring to concentrate on constructivist models or pragmatic analyses. In the present work, Skrbina returns to a classic metaphysical approach, seeking not so much an essence of technology but rather a deep and penetrating analysis of the entire technological phenomenon. Drawing on the Greeks, he argues for a teleological metaphysics in which increasing order in the universe is itself defined as a technological process. On this reading, all of reality constitutes a technical sphere, a "pantechnikon," of universal scope. This work — the first-ever book-length treatment of the topic — breaks new ground by providing an in-depth and critical study of the metaphysics of technology, as well as drawing out the practical consequences. Technology poses significant risks to humanity and the planet, risks that can be mitigated through a detailed philosophical analysis.

Book excerpt: Applied Nanotechnology: The Conversion of Research Results to Products, Third Edition, takes an integrated approach to the scientific, commercial and social aspects of nanotechnology, exploring the relationship between nanotechnology and innovation, the changing economics and business models required to commercialize innovations in nanotechnology, and product design challenges that are investigated through case studies. Applications in various sectors, including composite materials, energy and agriculture are included, as is a section on the role of the government in promoting nanotechnology. In addition, the potential future of molecular self-assembly in industrial production is discussed, along with the ethics and social implications of nanotechnology. This new edition begins a concise introduction to nanotechnology, carefully explaining the relationships between science, technology, wealth and innovation. Next, it focuses on actual products and processes, including the big three areas of application, health, IT and energy. Different types of nanobusiness (upstream, downstream, ancillary etc.), are also carefully delineated, and aspects such as design and realization (e.g., actual fabrication) are also covered, amongst other timely topics. This book offers a vision of the role of nanotechnology in confronting the challenges facing humanity, from healthcare to climate change. - Written by an author who has direct, hands-on experience working in a large nanotechnology-based company, in academia as a professor and chair of nanotechnology, and as the co-owner and director of a nanotechnology-based start-up - Presents comprehensive coverage in an integrated fashion, not wasting space on trivial details that, if not already known to the reader, can be readily found in generic sources - Thoroughly revised, reflecting advances in the field - Includes areas that have been expanded into nanotechnology, such as health, and the safety of nano products and processes
