Book Synopsis Much Ado about Microbunching by : Daniel F. Ratner
Download or read book Much Ado about Microbunching written by Daniel F. Ratner and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The push to provide ever brighter coherent radiation sources has led to the creation of correspondingly bright electron beams. With billions of electrons packed into normalized emittances (phase space) below one micron, collective effects may dominate both the preservation and use of such ultra-bright beams. An important class of collective effects is due to density modulations within the bunch, or microbunching. Microbunching may be deleterious, as in the case of the Mi- crobunching Instability (MBI), or it may drive radiation sources of unprecedented intensity, as in the case of Free Electron Lasers (FELs). In this work we begin by describing models of microbunching due to inherent beam shot noise, which sparks both the MBI as well as SLAC's Linac Coherent Light Source, the world's first hard X-ray laser. We first use this model to propose a mechanism for reducing the inherent beam shot noise as well as for predicting MBI effects. We then describe experimental measurements of the resulting microbunching at LCLS, including optical radiation from the MBI, as well as the first gain length and harmonic measurements from a hard X-ray FEL. In the final chapters, we describe schemes that use external laser modulations to microbunch light sources of the future. In these sections we describe coherent light source schemes for both both linacs and storage rings.

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Studies on Steady-State Microbunching written by Xiujie Deng and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is devoted to the theoretical and experimental studies of a novel accelerator light source mechanism called steady-state microbunching (SSMB) which promises high-power, high-repetition rate, narrow-band coherent radiation in an electron storage ring. The contribution of this dissertation consists of three parts: first, answers the question of how to realize SSMB from a beam dynamics perspective; second, reveals what radiation characteristics can we obtain from the formed SSMB; and third, experimentally demonstrates the working mechanism of SSMB in a real machine for the first time. The highlights of this book can be summarized as: Presents the first proof-of-principle experiment of a promising accelerator light source mechanism; Covers precision longitudinal and transverse-longitudinal coupling dynamics in a storage ring; Provides useful formulas and example parameters for high-power infrared, EUV and soft X-ray light source design.

Book Synopsis Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology - Volume 9: Technology And Applications Of Advanced Accelerator Concepts by : Alexander Wu Chao
Download or read book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology - Volume 9: Technology And Applications Of Advanced Accelerator Concepts written by Alexander Wu Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its invention in the 1920s, particle accelerators have made tremendous progress in accelerator science, technology and applications. However, the fundamental acceleration principle, namely, to apply an external radiofrequency (RF) electric field to accelerate charged particles, remains unchanged. As this method (either room temperature RF or superconducting RF) is approaching its intrinsic limitation in acceleration gradient (measured in MeV/m), it becomes apparent that new methods with much higher acceleration gradient (measured in GeV/m) must be found for future very high energy accelerators as well as future compact (table-top or room-size) accelerators. This volume introduces a number of advanced accelerator concepts (AAC) — their principles, technologies and potential applications. For the time being, none of them stands out as a definitive direction in which to go. But these novel ideas are in hot pursuit and look promising. Furthermore, some AAC requires a high power laser system. This has the implication of bringing two different communities — accelerator and laser — to join forces and work together. It will have profound impact on the future of our field. Also included are two special articles, one on 'Particle Accelerators in China' which gives a comprehensive overview of the rapidly growing accelerator community in China. The other features the person-of-the-issue who was well-known nuclear physicist Jerome Lewis Duggan, a pioneer and founder of a huge community of industrial and medical accelerators in the US.

This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of proceedings is an up-to-date review of the advances made in the past two decades on the production, control and exploitation of bright electron and light beams for science — in particular, innovative manipulation and control, in linear and circular accelerators, of high brightness charged particle beams. In the conceptual, theoretical and experimental framework of nonlinear beam dynamics and collective cooperative effects, the book provides an update of the state-of-the-art theoretical formulations, techniques and technologies, innovative concepts and scientific results obtained at existing accelerator facilities. Challenges and solutions, proposed or implemented, for the operation of third and fourth generation storage rings as synchrotron radiation sources and circular colliders for high energy particle physics, as well as radiofrequency linear accelerators for Compton/Thomson scattering-based light sources and free electron lasers, are reviewed and discussed. The complementarity between single-pass and recirculating light sources in energy, timing and spectral operational modes also emerges.

Book Synopsis Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology - Volume 3 by : Alex Chao
Download or read book Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology - Volume 3 written by Alex Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each generation yielded growths in brightness and time resolution that were unimaginable just a few years earlier. In particular, the progression from the 3rd to 4th generation is a true revolution; the peak brilliance of coherent soft and hard x-rays has increased by 7-10 orders of magnitude, and the image resolution has reached the angstrom (1 [symbol] = 10-10 meters) and femto-second (1 fs = 10-15 second) scales. These impressive capabilities have fostered fundamental scientific advances and led to an explosion of numerous possibilities in many important research areas including material science, chemistry, molecular biology and the life sciences. Even more remarkably, this field of photon source invention and development shows no signs of slowing down. Studies have already been started on the next generation of x-ray sources, which would have a time resolution in the atto-second (1 as = 10-18 second) regime, comparable to the time of electron motion inside atoms.

Book Synopsis Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology - Volume 3: Accelerators As Photon Sources by : Alexander Wu Chao
Download or read book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology - Volume 3: Accelerators As Photon Sources written by Alexander Wu Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011-01-20 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last half century we have witnessed tremendous progress in the production of high-quality photons by electrons in accelerators. This dramatic evolution has seen four generations of accelerators as photon sources. The 1st generation used the electron storage rings built primarily for high-energy physics experiments, and the synchrotron radiation from the bending magnets was used parasitically. The 2nd generation involved rings dedicated to synchrotron radiation applications, with the radiation again from the bending magnets. The 3rd generation, currently the workhorse of these photon sources, is dedicated advanced storage rings that employ not only bending magnets but also insertion devices (wigglers and undulators) as the source of the radiation. The 4th generation, which is now entering operation, is photon sources based on the free electron laser (FEL), an invention made in the early 1970s.Each generation yielded growths in brightness and time resolution that were unimaginable just a few years earlier. In particular, the progression from the 3rd to 4th generation is a true revolution; the peak brilliance of coherent soft and hard x-rays has increased by 7-10 orders of magnitude, and the image resolution has reached the angstrom (1 Å = 10-10 meters) and femto-second (1 fs = 10-15 second) scales. It can be fully expected that these photon sources will stand out among the most powerful future science research tools. The physics community as well as the entire scientific community will hear of many pioneering and groundbreaking research results using these sources in the coming years. This volume contains fifteen articles, all written by leading scientists in their respective fields. It is aimed at the designers, builders and users of accelerator-based photon sources as well as general audience who are interested in this topic.

Book Synopsis Intelligent Beam Control in Accelerators by : Zheqiao Geng
Download or read book Intelligent Beam Control in Accelerators written by Zheqiao Geng and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically discusses the algorithms and principles for achieving stable and optimal beam (or products of the beam) parameters in particle accelerators. A four-layer beam control strategy is introduced to structure the subsystems related to beam controls, such as beam device control, beam feedback, and beam optimization. This book focuses on the global control and optimization layers. As a basis of global control, the beam feedback system regulates the beam parameters against disturbances and stabilizes them around the setpoints. The global optimization algorithms, such as the robust conjugate direction search algorithm, genetic algorithm, and particle swarm optimization algorithm, are at the top layer, determining the feedback setpoints for optimal beam qualities. In addition, the authors also introduce the applications of machine learning for beam controls. Selected machine learning algorithms, such as supervised learning based on artificial neural networks and Gaussian processes, and reinforcement learning, are discussed. They are applied to configure feedback loops, accelerate global optimizations, and directly synthesize optimal controllers. Authors also demonstrate the effectiveness of these algorithms using either simulation or tests at the SwissFEL. With this book, the readers gain systematic knowledge of intelligent beam controls and learn the layered architecture guiding the design of practical beam control systems.
Book Synopsis Beam Diagnostics in Superconducting Accelerating Cavities by : Pei Zhang
Download or read book Beam Diagnostics in Superconducting Accelerating Cavities written by Pei Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An energetic charged particle beam introduced to an rf cavity excites a wakefield therein. This wakefield can be decomposed into a series of higher order modes and multipoles, which for sufficiently small beam offsets are dominated by the dipole component. This work focuses on using these dipole modes to detect the beam position in third harmonic superconducting S-band cavities for light source applications. A rigorous examination of several means of analysing the beam position based on signals radiated to higher order modes ports is presented. Experimental results indicate a position resolution, based on this technique, of 20 microns over a complete module of 4 cavities. Methods are also indicated for improving the resolution and for applying this method to other cavity configurations. This work is distinguished by its clarity and potential for application to several other international facilities. The material is presented in a didactic style and is recommended both for students new to the field, and for scientists well-versed in the field of rf diagnostics.
