Book Synopsis The Activities of Bacterial Pathogens in Vivo by : Harry Smith
Download or read book The Activities of Bacterial Pathogens in Vivo written by Harry Smith and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathogenic bacteria have unique biological properties, which enable them to invade a host and cause sickness. The molecular bases of these biological properties are the determinants of pathogenicity, and the research objectives are to recognize them, identify them chemically and relate their structure to function. Most of our present knowledge comes from studies with cultures in vitro. However, there is a rising interest in bacterial behaviour in the infected host and new methods have been developed for studying it. This book describes those methods and shows how they, and a recent surge in conventional studies, are shedding light on the activities of bacterial pathogens in vivo. It discusses bacterial and host factors that operate in vivo to cause illness, showing how phenomena recognized in vitro relate to behaviour in vivo and, if evidence of relevance is not available now, indicating how it might be obtained.

Book Synopsis Specificity in Plant Diseases by : R. Wood
Download or read book Specificity in Plant Diseases written by R. Wood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Phytotoxins in Plant Diseases" was held in Pugnochiuso (Italy) in June 1970. It was concerned mainly with the chemistry and mode of action of substances toxic to higher plants which are produced by pathogenic bacteria and fungi. The role of such substances in specificity was consider ed but largely in relation to host-specific toxins. In 1973, in light of the success of the 1970 Institute, we decided to plan for another in 1975 and after discussion with col leagues during the Second International Congress of Plant Pathology, we selected "Specificity in Plant Diseases" as the theme for the 1975 Institute. Our chief reasons for the choice were that specificity is un doubtedly the dominant problem in plant pathology and that with the rapid increase during the last decade or so in the diversity and sophistication of biochemical techniques, we should now expect during the next few years much more research on specificity and major ad vances in our understanding of the mechanisms that control it. It seemed to us that a residential meeting with the advantages and status of a NATO Advanced Study Institute would do much to stimulate interest and research in this most important field. The theme also had the merit of continuity with that of the 1970 Institute.

Download or read book Molecular Microbiology written by Stephen J.W. Busby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular microbiology is a rapidly expanding area of contemporary science: the application of molecular biology has opened up the microbial world in many remarkable ways. The attraction of microbes is that they are self-contained and that they offer complete solutions to understanding the phenomenon of life. This book provides a concise introduction to current research in the field. Four major areas are introduced and explained: - Bacterial Biochemistry - Bacterial Genomes - Gene Expression - Microbial Cell Biology

Book Synopsis Antibiofilm Strategies by : Katharina Richter
Download or read book Antibiofilm Strategies written by Katharina Richter and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacteria and fungi are able to aggregate together or on surfaces in densely packed microcolonies, facilitated by extracellular polymeric substances for cell protection and stability. These biofilms have proven to be extremely hard to eradicate and remove once established. In chronic infections, this condition can result in a high degree of morbidity and mortality as regular antibiotic treatments are ineffective against biofilms. In industrial facilities, the formation of biofilms can ruin production and result in enormous financial losses. In this book, the current state of antibiofilm research is presented by experts from around the world. Novel, cutting-edge techniques and new optimized strategies based on established methods are discussed in chapters focused on biofilm prevention, treatment and control for the application in clinical, industrial and veterinary settings. Antibiofilm strategies, such as chemical and enzymatic treatments, surface modification and coatings, quorum sensing inhibition and dispersal induction, phage therapy, cold plasma treatment, hyperbaric oxygen treatment, and metal-based nanomedicine are covered, among many others. This book contributes to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being and is a valuable resource for healthcare professionals, microbiologists, academics and for educators to inform curricula of universities and colleges.

Book Synopsis Microbial Interactions with Man and Animals by : Alan H. Linton
Download or read book Microbial Interactions with Man and Animals written by Alan H. Linton and published by . This book was released on 1982-07-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated account of the study of pathogenesis encompassing both the medical and veterinary fields. Discusses interactions between the individual host and the parasite, with emphasis on the parasite throughout. Briefly describes the various host defences and responses to infection, and considers the differences in susceptibility of various animal hosts as well as the differences between individuals of the same animal species. Discusses the topic of epidemiology from a microbiologist's point of view, addressing the ecology of the microbial pathogen, its natural history, and the effects produced by the outbreak at local or international levels. Also includes discussions of brucellosis, and the epidemiology of mycological diseases.
