Vision-based controlled flight and its further developments are geared towards use on MAVs of the future. A test-bed airplane was designed from MAV concepts, and was large enough to accommodate the current commercial components available on the market. Two generations of the vision-based MAV were developed and tested. Each generation had 0.6 m wingspan and used a pusher configuration with a flexible wing concept. The second generation, however, had an improved fuselage and wing design, drive system, and a unique morphing mechanism. Both vehicles were tested and compared during numerous flight and wind tunnel tests. Effects of the morphing mechanism on the flexible wing were analyzed in the wind tunnel using the digital image correlation method.

Significant advances in the miniaturization of electronics make it now possible to use vehicles of this type in a detection or surveillance role to carry visual, acoustic, chemical, or biological sensors. Interestingly, many of the advances in MAV technology can be traced directly to annual student competitions, begun in the late 1990s, that use relatively low cost model airplane equipment. The wide variety of configurations entered in these contests and their ongoing success has led to a serious interest in testing the performance of these vehicles for adaptation to practical applications. MAVs present aerodynamic issues unique to their size and the speeds at which they operate. Of particular concern is the aerodynamic efficiency of various fixed wing concepts. Very little information on the performance of low aspect ratio wing planforms existed for this flight regime until MAVs became of interest and the proliferation of fixed wing designs has since expanded. This book presents a brief history of unmanned air vehicles and offers elements of aerodynamics for low aspect ratio wings. Propulsion and the basic concepts for fixed wing MAV design are presented, as is a method for autopilot integration. Three different wing configurations are presented in a series of step-by-step case studies. The goal of the book is to assist both working professionals and students to design, build, and fly MAVs, and do so in a way that will advance the state of the art and lead to the development of even smalleraircraft.

SLAM is used to estimate the location of a mobile platform and simultaneously build a map of its surrounding environment. The essence of the SLAM algorithm is creating a map of everything that the mobile robot senses using its onboard sensors while simultaneously localizing itself on the built map. SLAM is used in the various robotics applications. `Roomba' robot was the first SLAM based vacuum cleaner introduced by iRobot. SLAM is also used in various applications such as autonomous navigation of mining robots, space explorations rovers, toy robots, and self-driving cars. For path planning or collision avoidance, the robot uses its poses and mapped environment to perform the specified task. Real-time SLAM systems perform the required processing such as capturing sensor data and processing the captured data in a real time. With limited computational power, the best policies as well as algorithms are being developed to obtain correct robot poses and a map of the environment in real time. The main challenge in SLAM is to design real time application with onboard processing for applications like autonomous navigation wherein robot may need to operate at night or under low illumination conditions. This research aimed at development of monocular Visual SLAM for indoor environment. This chapter presents the literature review of the various visual SLAM algorithms. First section discusses theoretical background of visual SLAM. The feature-based and direct approaches are presented in second section. The third section describes different embedded platforms used followed by review of SLAM algorithms. Various evaluation metrics used and the bench marking datasets, applications, open challenges in visual SLAM are discussed. Chronology of SLAM The development of visual SLAM took place in three phases: namely SLAM problems, Visual SLAM and Visual SLAM with IMU integration to achieve as robustness shown in Figure 2-1. In, first stage focused various mathematical expressions presented to solve the SLAM problem. During second phase the attention of SLAM shifted to visual approaches. Various visual SLAM algorithms were presented with RGB-D cameras, and stereo cameras. Fundamental properties of Visual SLAM such as consistency and convergence were studied. Various SLAM methods were developed around the visual LAM. In third phase the robustness of visual SLAM algorithm is improved. The goal of this stage is to improve the reliability of visual SLAM for various real-life applications. This lead to the development of visual inertial SLAM methods. he second phase of SLAM development is called as golden phase, since most of the problems in SLAM were solved. In 2007, The biggest achievement is keyframe based PTAM (Parallel Tracking and Mapping) was proposed[12]. This approach allowed task parallelization, good utilization of global optimization, reduction in computation time and reduction in tracking drift error. Nowadays, PTAM's framework is used in almost every visual SLAM algorithm. The Visual SLAM became reliable with integration of global optimization, effective use of loop closing, keyframe and map point culling policies for memory management and computation time. The parallelization using multi-threading helped to achieve real time performance. Different hardware's like RGB-D and stereo cameras were integrated with vision-based SLAM algorithms. In third phase, main focus was on improving the robustness of visual SLAM. The combination of camera and IMU became an important research topic. In 2010's, the combination of camera and IMU was used to implement the visual inertial approach.

Book excerpt: Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are a very small Unmanned Vehicles which provide interesting indoor implementations due to its reduced size. Therefore, onboard payload is very restricted, so GPS use is very limited too. The most common payload is video-network and it works independently of vehicle control system. In this context, the autopilot addition in a given MAV platform results in a significant changes that could raise the process and, in the worst case, could be too expensive because of the weight limitation. A proposed solution is to design an autopilot that close the control loop of the System "on ground" and links by the remote control channel. Consequently, the orders are sent from ground station as an emulation of the remote control. To close the control loop of the system would be necessary the telemetry acquisition and send it through audio channel from video-network onboard in the platform. In addition it would be necessary to process the images on ground station to know the attitude and relative position at real time. This is an only indoor solution which is the main MAV actuation environment. Finally, a quad-rotor platform gyro-stabilized as a power plant simplifies immensely the closing of the control loop (in the ground station) implementation since we can divide the MAV control in different subsystems. Such the autopilot is on ground, it does not contribute to raise the weight restrictions, so the MAV's thrust is not compromised. It will be implemented a height stabilization subsystem in a MAV.

At a higher level, the potential of micro-air vehicles opens up new possibilities in the formulation of military strategies that require investigation.
