Book excerpt: "With his night photographs, Michael Kenna enables us to see through the darkness to gain a sense of a world which cannot be seen with daytime vision... His images play with the psychology of the night, with the fears and mysteries of darkness that lead us to shelter and light in the safety of our homes... Kenna's photographs explore familiar as well as unknown locations and transform them into places of intrigue."--michaelkenna.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, International Photography Award, 1st Place, Professional: Book, Documentary, 2016 The Afghan people are standing at a crucial crossroads in history. Can their fragile democratic institutions survive the drawdown of US military support? Will Afghan women and girls be stripped of their modest gains in freedom and opportunity as the West loses interest in their plight? While the media have largely moved on from these stories, Paula Bronstein remains passionately committed to bearing witness to the lives of the Afghan people. In this powerful photo essay, she goes beyond war coverage to reveal the full complexity of daily life in what may be the world's most reported on yet least known country. Afghanistan: Between Hope and Fear presents a photographic portrait of this war-torn country's people across more than a decade. With empathy born of the challenges of being an American female photojournalist working in a conservative Islamic country, Bronstein gives voice to those Afghans, particularly women and children, rendered silent during the violent Taliban regime. She documents everything from the grave trials facing the country—human rights abuses against women, poverty and the aftermath of war, and heroin addiction, among them—to the stirrings of new hope, including elections, girls' education, and work and recreation. Fellow award-winning journalist Christina Lamb describes the gains that Afghan women have made since the overthrow of the Taliban, as well as the daunting obstacles they still face. An eloquent portrait of everyday life, Afghanistan: Between Hope and Fear is the most complete visual narrative history of the country currently in print.

Michael Kenna is regarded as one of the most accomplished photographers working today. This book charts Kenna's work in the field of architectural photography, showing how his approach to the built environment informs his style, whether he's capturing natural or human-made structures. In page after page of lush duotone illustrations, the book creates dialogs between images to show how Kenna applies light, shadow, composition, and perspective to similar effect in different settings. Yvonne Meyer-Lohr's astute curatorial approach helps us understand how deftly Kenna moves between techniques, whether he is capturing the network of cables on a suspension bridge, the glittering jewels of a nighttime cityscape, or the haunting silhouette of a factory tower. Accompanied by insightful texts by Meyer-Lohr, this volume is a comprehensive look at a brilliant photographer whose dedication to craft and technique sets him apart from his contemporaries.

Book excerpt: The celebrated contemporary photographer Michael Kenna presents a gorgeous new collection of images, all photographed with plastic Holga cameras. Michael Kenna is internationally renowned for producing evocative black-and-white images of nature and the urban environment. Often photographing at night or in the early morning hours, the majority of his photographs involve long time exposures with the camera on a tripod. However, some of Kenna's more quirky, whimsical, and unpredictable images have been photographed with inexpensive, hand-held, plastic Holga cameras. These cameras generally produce relatively lowfidelity images, with marked vignetting. Precisely because of these attributes and its portability, Kenna often carries a Holga camera, even when he is not specifically photographing. For this beautifully produced book, Kenna has chosen his favorite Holga images, many never seen before, from his vast archive of negatives. Despite their low-tech origin, these refined and artful photographs bear the hallmarks of Kenna's brilliant work.

Book excerpt: More than twenty years after its initial publication, Michael Kenna’s seminal collection of photographs of the Ford River Rouge industrial complex is now available in a new, revised, and expanded edition. One of the world’s most acclaimed photographers working exclusively in black-and-white, Michael Kenna has traveled the world to create stunning, magical images of nature and manmade objects. Known for the ethereal tone and incredibly nuanced detail of his photographs, Kenna is also a chronicler of environmental degradation. His images of an auto plant outside of Detroit, Michigan, are some of his best-known works. Long out of print, Rouge has been brought back to life with a spectacular new design, an authoritative essay by art historian James Steward, and many previously unpublished images that were part of the original series. As the city of Detroit struggles to reclaim its heritage as an American commercial and artistic hub, these photographs resonate more than ever with the stark realities and hidden beauty of the industrial landscape.

Book excerpt: "Diana Ketchum's magnificently researched and beautifully accomplished text, with its accompanying images, is not a book for mere specialists. It is a book of interest to garden enthusiasts, to art historians, to surrealists -- to anyone with a taste for fantasy, architectural metaphor, the poetry of vision, the aesthetics of stone and leaf." -- Arthur C. Danto, Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy, Columbia University The Dé sert de Retz, the supreme surviving example of the folly garden, is one of the most amply and beautifully documented of France's historic gardens. Since 1990, when the Arion Press published the first book on this garden outside of Paris, the Dé sert de Retz has been transformed by an ongoing restoration. That limited, fine-press edition is long out of print and much sought after. This new edition reproduces in a smaller oblong format the material in the original book. Diana Ketcham's text has been expanded and updated to reflect recent scholarship and physical changes to the site. There are also new photographs that show the restored landscape and the complete restoration of the folly known as the Broken Column to its original state as a false ruin. The 100 illustrations consist of views of the construction of the park (1774-1789); models from antiquity and analogues in contemporary gardens; facsimiles of the 26 engravings of the garden that appeared in Georges Le Rouge's Dé tails de nouveaux jardins a la mode: Jardins anglo-chinois, the most important illustrated book on gardens of the eighteenth century; and photographs of the buildings and grounds taken by the British photographer Michael Kenna. Thesebeautiful photographs, together with Diana Ketcham's carefully researched text, capture the haunting atmosphere of the place during its transition from the romantic, overgrown state of benign neglect, which so intrigued the Surrealists, to the clearing and building that today preserve a balance between the encroachments of unruly vegetation and disintegration.

Book excerpt: For over half a century, acclaimed photographer Ruth Bernhard has worked to "simplify, isolate, and give emphasis to form with greatest clarity" in her radiant photographs of the female nude. Now, with Chronicle Books' timely reissue of her best-selling volume, The Eternal Body, Bernhard's most evocative images are once again available in a superb collection, complete with an insightfill text, that pays tribute to a living legend. Hauntingly sensual yet classically reserved, the book's ethereal duotone photographs appear to be illuminated from within so that even the simplest lines of the human form -- a draped torso, a curved neck, an angled limb -- take on a complexity not often seen in work of this kind. A master artist whose technical prowess places her among the ranks of the greatest photographers of our time, Ruth Bernhard has created a masterpiece of expression and sensitivity in The Eternal Body.

Book excerpt: Maverick Camera is a collection of work based mostly on my career as a New York City photographer.I am a very diverse photographer, which can be confusing for some photo editors and art buyers in the photo industry. I always felt like my eyes were gifted with a big heart to back them for delivering a wide range and a full point of view for my clients. I love shooting for magazines and feel I am at my best as an assignment shooter. While living in NYC, I kept my gear bags and cart ready to roll to jobs right by the door. My career whisked me out at a moments notice more often than not. At age 26, I interned with National Geographic for 6 months, then relocated to Manhattan where I met at least 38 editors in three weeks and shot four jobs within that time line. I did not return to my former job as a Park Ranger rather I flowed with the assignments that streamed in at a seemingly steady pace. It was crazy, and I was propelled by a force within me that I think is energized into a twenty something year old. I was blessed with a plethora of work and my infinite passion for life. Everything and everyone that crossed my path caught my curiosity; still does! I stepped off the train at Grand Central Station in the late 1980’s. The Factory, Interview Magazine, Aids, and the Punk Rock scene had exploded. I was an innocent with no clue about the comings and goings of real city people. I crashed with a cool artist gal, Linda Draper, for three weeks. I had $1000.00 dollars in my pocket. I had to work. I was hungry for it and there was no stopping me. I love image making and can’t imagine my life without pure vision and a sense of creating on the spot something evocative and timeless, and if lucky enough, iconographic. I am intuitive and it is my intent and hope to inspire others to be more compassionate as they see, feel and reveal through their artistry. Thank you to all those who assigned, sat and assisted. Enjoy.
