Book excerpt: During the last decade there has been a renewed interest in research on supramolecular assemblies in solutions, such as micelles and microemulsions, not only because of their extensive applications in industries dealing with catalysts, detergency, biotechnology, and enhanced oil recovery, but also due to the development of new and more powerful experimental and theoretical tools for probing the microscopic behavior of these systems. Prominent among the array of the newly available experimental techniques are photon correlation spectroscopy, small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering, and neutron spin-echo and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. On the theoretical side, the traditionally emphasized thermodynamic approach to the study of the phase behavior of self-assembled systems in solutions is gradually being replaced by statistical mechanical studies of semi-micro scopic and microscopic models of the assemblies. Since the statistical mechanical approach demands as its starting point the microscopic struc tural information of the self-assembled system, the experimental determina tion of the structures of micelles and microemulsions becomes of paramount interest. In this regard the scattering techniques mentioned above have played an important role in recent years and will continue to do so in the future. In applying the scattering techniques to the supramolecular species in solution, one cannot often regard the solution to be ideal. This is because the inter-aggregate interaction is often long-ranged since it is coulombic in nature and the interparticle correlations are thus appreciable.

Book excerpt: This volume and its companion Volume 1 chronicle the proceed ings of the International Symposium on Micellization, Solubiliza tion, and tficroemulsions held under the auspices of the Northeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Albany, New York, August 8-11, 1976. The technical program consisted of 48 papers by 91 authors from twelve countries. The program was divided into six sessions, and Dr. Hartley delivered the Concluding Remarks. Subsequently, six more papers were contributed for the proceedings volumes with the result that these volumes contain Sl papers (three papers are not included for certain reasons) and are divided into seven parts. The first three parts are embodied in Volume I and the remaining four parts constitute Volume 2; each part is followed by a Discussion Section. Dr. Hartley's Concluding Remarks are in cluded in both volumes. When the idea of arranging a symposium on micelles was broached to me, I accepted it without an iota of hesitation. I had two op tions: either to make it a one- or two-sessions symposium, or bring together the global community actively carrying out research in this area. I opted for the latter as the subject was very timely and I knew that it would elicit very enthusiastic response. In order to broaden the scope of the symposium, I suggested that the theme of the symposium should be Micellizationy Solubilization and Microemulsions.

Book excerpt: Over the last decades, the study of surfactants (detergents, for example) has been profoundly changed by ideas and techniques from physics, chemistry, and materials science. Among these are: self assembly; critical phenomena, scaling, and renormalization; high-resolution scattering, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This book represents the first systematic account of these new developments, providing both a general introduction to the subject as well as a review of recent developments. The book will be a very useful tool for the biophysist, biochemist or physical chemist working in the field of surfactants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamics of Surfactant Self-Assemblies explains the dynamics of micellar equilibria, tracking surfactant exchange, and micelle formation/breakdown processes. Highlighting the structural similarities of amphiphilic block copolymers to surfactants, this volume elucidates the dynamics of more complex self-assemblies that surfactants and amphiphilic block copolymers form in solutions. The book first discusses self-assembling processes taking place in aqueous surfactant solutions and the dynamic character of surfactant self-assemblies. The next chapter reviews methods that permit the study of the dynamics of self-assemblies. The dynamics of micelles of surfactants and block copolymers, solubilized systems, microemulsions, vesicles, and lyotropic liquid crystals/mesophases are reviewed successively. The authors point out the similarities and differences in the behavior of these different self-assemblies. Much emphasis is put on the processes of surfactant exchange and of micelle formation/breakdown that determine the surfactant residence time in micelles, and the micelle lifetime. The last three chapters cover topics for which the dynamics of surfactant self-assemblies can be important for a better understanding of observed behaviors: dynamics of surfactant adsorption on surfaces, rheology of viscoelastic surfactant solutions, and kinetics of chemical reactions performed in surfactant self-assemblies used as microreactors. Dynamics of Surfactant Self-Assemblies offers a unique and comprehensive review of the literature that exists on the dynamics of the various surfactant self-assemblies and a unified perspective on this topic. It provides researchers with a useful guide for the dynamics of the surfactant systems that they wish to investigate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microemulsions: Theory and Practice covers the development of the theory and practice of microemulsion systems. This book is divided into seven chapters that explore the physics and chemistry of microemulsions. This book deals first with the commercial history of microemulsions, from the discovery of carnauba wax emulsions to polymer emulsions. This topic is followed by discussions on the theoretical aspects of microemulsion formulation techniques and the design of other products. The subsequent chapter describes the microemulsion formulation with less solubilizer or emulsifier together with their optical properties. A chapter examines the mixed film theory that explains the dispersions, oil-water interface, and inferences in microemulsions. Another chapter considers the role of microemulsions in micellar solutions and their relations to the concentrations of different compounds. This chapter also looks into the association phenomena of three-component phase equilibria diagrams and liquids crystals to microemulsions. The concluding chapter discusses the role of the capillary and hydrostatic forces on the entrapment of oil in the reservoir and the necessary conditions for the displacement of entrapped oil. The important properties and economic aspects of a microemulsion slug required for the tertiary oil recovery are also covered in this chapter.

Winsor's fundamental hypothesis on a natural interfacial curvature depending on the values of the formulation variables, this unique book shows scientists how to understand the intrinsic structure of these complex systems and their corresponding physical properties... predict how a change in one formulation variable (surfactant structure, oil structure, aqueous phase composition, temperature, etc.) will modify the microemulsion... and systematically formulate microemulsions for individual applications. This book provides a thermodynamic analysis supporting the existence of natural interfacial curvature... compares the behavior of commercial surfactant mixtures and pure isomeric surfactant molecules in order to point out differences and similarities highly significant for various uses... explains how micelles can evolve smoothly and continuously toward solutions containing large quantities of oil and water... gives procedures for fixing quantitative relationships among formulation variables... plus much more.Illustrated with more than 200 diagrams, tables, and photographs, and completely referenced, this superb volume is essential reading for surfactant, colloid, and physical chemists in both academe and industry, as well as chemical engineers, biotechnologists, and petroleum engineers.Contents: 1. The R-Ratio. 2. Aqueous solutions containing amphiphiles. 3. Nonpolar solutions containing amphiphiles. 4. The phase behavior and properties of solutions containing amphiphiles, organic liquids, and water: micellar solutions. 5. Methods for promoting phase changes. 6. Compensating changes between formulation variables. 7. Solubilization. 8. Thermodynamics of solubilized systems.
