Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do people fully understand and appreciate the pain caused by being shamed and the deepening pain followed by blame? My personal experience, 40 years in practice and general understanding of society, tells me that few people do. Oftentimes, neither the person shamed nor those living with such people are aware of the painful cycle and its impact on their lives. For the person caught up in this cycle it is just a sense of emptiness, unworthiness and just not being good enough. The observer, on the other hand, is only aware of negative behaviour, which is more often than not judged harshly. This is the story of two people who have journeyed through this experience: One with a seemingly successful life as a doctor and the other’ who struggled with drug-addiction, both caught up in the cycle of shame, blame and pain. The author also shares their continuing journey of rising above and living beyond this experience, hoping to help others recognise, understand and break free of this cycle.

Book excerpt: Martin Blumenson refers to this book as a “sensitive, beautifully written personal memoir,” and calls it a contribution to understanding, “particularly to Americans who know little of how World War II and its immediate aftermath disrupted the lives of those who survived the defeat of Germany.” Vividly, humanly, Shelton tells her story from the point of view of a teen-age German girl, one who witnessed her country’s surge to power and who felt the ignominy of both Germany and Germans after the fall. She reaches a point during the war when “Sometimes the way we now live seems unreal, as if we were marionettes, with orders and permits and schedules attached to us instead of strings.” But after the defeat of Germany life gets considerably worse. The victorious Russians evict the natives from their homes. They sneer and leer at the women who must venture forth for food. In this defeated land “the nights become unbearably long; without any physical activity by day, sleep refuses to come. I yearn for sleep, be it temporary or eternal. Death is becoming a friend; the enemy has a new name now: Rape.” Then comes the dreaded order to evacuate all Germans from Lower Silesia: “How can a whole people be uprooted, disowned, tossed aside like useless flotsam—how? With the stroke of a pen, with a new line drawn on a map, we are sentenced to homelessness.” Not knowing where they will be sent, they plod out into darkness and cold with the other Germans, their worldly goods reduced to what they can carry. Embittered, they are herded into vermin-infested freight cars, still unaware of their destination.

Book excerpt: On Challenging Journeys We Find Out Who We Are Apartheid is a powerful memoir of Una's Personal and political struggles growing up in the peaceful community of Vrededorp, Johannesburg, South Africa. By age nine, the political arena in South Africa changed; Una and her family are assessed, segregated and uprooted from their home in Vrededorp by the Aparteid Authorities and moved to Coronationville, a Johannesburg suburb. Witnessing "The Sharpville Massacre" in March 1960, a sudden shift of lens brought a new focus on her young mind that forever changed how she viewed those in power. After a failed marriage, she is now a single mother and determined to find a better life for herself and her son. She falls in love with a German immigrant. With her fierce spirit, she begins challenging the Immorality law and they fight for their love under the watchful eye and harassment of the local police. Her poems bring raw vulnerability and frustration to the forefront of what it feels like to be held back and watch injustice continue.

Almost like a rags to riches life story. Not riches in monetary values or materialistic achievements but more personal goals achieved throughout my life. In the same breath we thank my Creator for all the things in life given to us free of charge eg. the air that we breath, our sight, our hearing, our taste, our smell and many more. Our parents struggled in life to rear us and give us everything a child could ask for. We had no wealth or inheritance but are always thankful to our parents who instilled in us love, passion, the ability to help others and to be good to our neighbours and the elders. As a child I always had the energy and goal to achieve high expectations, reaching for the ultimate peak in society. Sport was my passion. I excelled in athletics being the fastest sprinter in my time, in my age group and in my province. I was also a successful professional soccer player. Toured South Africa, played against top soccer teams in my country of birth and rubbed shoulders against some of the world's greatest soccer legends. I was very successful in the Retail world in Johannesburg, South Africa where many employees reported to me directly or indirectly. Retail was my life for over 30 years and I was employed by Woolworths. I married the most beautiful loving mother of my three children. Life had many ups and downs but we achieved many goals together. We enjoyed a short 22 years marriage until the day arrived when the Almighty took her away from us. After her passing we immigrated to Australia starting a new life in a new country. Australia to us was the best move. We can plan but the Almighty plans better. We opened our own business which lasted for over 20 years until retirement. I am thankful to my parents, my siblings, my children, friends and family and above all, my Creator. I hope that whoever reads my story will be inspired, motivated and achieve the highest level in life, Who knows, maybe a movie producer will pick up my story one day and transfer it on the big screen. God willing. In Shaa Allah.
