Book excerpt: When the three of us became the Sister Chicas, who knew we’d each get the surprise of our lives! And even though we don’t always agree on things—boys, clothes, and music come to mind—nothing gets in the way of our friendship. Three amigas: Our story begins in autumn, when the leaves and everything else in our lives changed. La Joven: Taina’s turning fifteen—and is so dreading her quinceaňera. Being dolled up in front of hundreds of guests—and making her Sister Chicas sport Pepto-pink gowns—isn’t her idea of a good time. She dreams of beautiful dresses and ankle-strap tacones to die for. And what about her secret: her Jamaican artist boyfriend? Should she let Mami choose her escort, or follow her heart—and ignite a family riot? La autora: Grachi’s Mexican parents have sacrificed so much to give her the best they could. How can she choose between being a good Chicana daughter—and grabbing la oportunidad de la vida? Now she needs her Sister Chicas more than ever, as she tries to balance the world of her familia and the new world that’s opened up to her, including a handsome friend who’s becoming more than a friend. La rock-era: Leni’s the rebel—with a punk ’do and an attitude to go with it. But her life’s about to get more complicated. And it’s the Sister Chicas who help her make sense of her Puerto Rican roots. Not to mention her new and confusing relationship with Carlos, her childhood friend turned handsome rockero. This year has been increíble. But we’ve got each other’s backs . . . now . . . y por siempre. Includes a Readers Guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through stories from kindergarten to sixth grade classrooms where students and teachers have attempted to put a critical edge on their teaching, this book shows critical literacy in action across the curriculum. Readers see students and teachers together using critical literacy discourse to frame conversations in ways that engage students in examining the meaning of the texts they read and acting on local and global social issues that emerge. Drawing on multiple perspectives such as cross-curricular explorations, multimedia, and child-centered inquiry pedagogies, the text features a theoretical toolkit; demonstrations from across the content areas including art, music, and media literacy; integration of technology; and attention to how critical literacy can inform decisions about standards and assessment. Annotated booklists, examples of students’ work, Reflection Questions, Try This (practical classroom strategies), and Resource Boxes can be used to encourage and support engaging in critical literacy work in different areas of the curriculum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the continuing U.S. debate over illegal immigration, a human face has rarely been shown. The topic has been presented as a monolithic abstraction, a creation of statistics, political rhetoric, and fear. This collection of letters between undocumented immigrants in California and their families back home reveals the other side of the story. Published for the first time in paperback, Between the Lines reveals the often poignant human drama currently being played out along the U.S.-Mexico border. The letters, presented in Spanish and English, express powerful feelings of hope, uncertainty, and fear among the undocumented travelers as they arrive in the United States and seek work, social support and legal status. The letters from their families in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador return feelings of hope, love, and support. Translator/editor Siems provides a powerful and lyrical introductory essay that sets the stage for the letters that follow.

Book excerpt: Start Seeing Diversity helps teachers recognize and reduce bias in young children by illustrating one community's effort to create a responsive child care program. Developed by teachers at Washington-Beech Community Preschool in Boston, this training handbook provides a framework for understanding bias among preschool children, reorganized for stand-alone use as a student text. Nine detailed chapters treat six areas of bias—gender, age, sexual orientation, race and ethnicity, economic class, and physical abilities—as well as the goals and guiding assumptions of anti-bias curriculum. Accompanying discussion questions encourage readers to examine their own memories and experiences. Perfect for pre-service and in-service teacher training, this helpful guide includes information-rich appendices containing: Guidelines for challenging oppression and responding to incidents involving bias A checklist for creating and assessing anti-bias environments A guide to analyzing children's books Directions for making photograph games like the ones used at Washington-Beech The book also includes sample scenarios, details for classroom implementation, suggested resources, and guidelines for group leaders. Ellen Wolpert is the founding director of the Washington-Beech Community Preschool in Boston. Ms. Wolpert currently works for Education Development Center, Inc., in Newton, Massachusetts.
