Download or read book The Enemy Within written by Noel Hynd and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2006-03-07 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is early summer of 2009, an uneasy time in the American capital. Washington is tense over a showdown between the United States and the new ruler of Libya. Laura Chapman is a U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to the White House. She is quirky, solitary, and frequently unorthodox. She is sexy and fit, adept with a pistol as well as with a hundred-pound Everlast bag. But she is also a brilliant intelligence analyst. That’s why she has been assigned to the Presidential Protection Detail for the past eleven years. The CIA assigns Laura to a case that borders on the unthinkable: an assassination plot against the new president. Shockingly, the trigger man will be a member of the United States Secret Service. Since the CIA knows that the assassin is male, Laura is not a suspect. The odds are heavily against her locating an alleged assassin within the Service, and even more heavily against her surviving the assignment. Beyond that, problems abound: First, because of her age and gender, members of the Service as well as agents in the CIA and FBI are waiting for her to fail. Second, Laura’s personal life is in disarray, and her secret drinking is about to get out of hand. Third, the hit is scheduled to take place on July 4, 2009, in the Oval Office. Less than two weeks from now. As her investigation proceeds, Laura cannot shake the suspicion that there are things she has not been told, that she is being set up. . . . In her increasingly frequent moments of paranoia, she wonders: Am I going to be the new Lee Harvey Oswald?
Book Synopsis Probable Cause for Vengeance by : David Wolf
Download or read book Probable Cause for Vengeance written by David Wolf and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Carter has been a committed lawman for over thirty years. A decorated Vietnam veteran, he was highly regarded as a patriot and a man of indisputable principles. And now, a tragic event has caused him to question his own moral convictions. The year is 2003. A fanatical Sunni terrorist has entered the country undetected. With the collaboration of three jihadi radicals hell-bent on martyrdom, he successfully plans and executes a series of devastating explosions that mercilessly kill numerous civilians, government officials, and military personnel. Prior to the bombings, the ruthless terrorist viciously and sordidly murdered a former team member of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, who was also Sam’s close friend and protégé, a young man he thought of like a son. Enraged by the cold brutality of the killing, Sam cannot shake the overwhelming desire for vengeance now taunting his soul. From results of a preliminary investigation, which included eyewitness testimony and crucial evidence extracted from an organized crime boss, the insurgent bomber was eventually identified and disclosed he had fled the US by way of Mexico in an attempt to escape back to his homeland. Invoking the Patriot Act as its authority, the United States District Court in St. Louis, Missouri, issued a fugitive from justice warrant and ordered the U.S. Marshals Service to track down and apprehend the fleeing jihadi extremist. The arduous responsibility fell to Deputy U.S. Marshal Carter and three handpicked fugitive task force members. The dilemma confronting the fearless lawman was not the mission to hunt down the evil madman but rather the burden of bringing him before the court to face justice—alive. Fate would ultimately decide the final outcome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Sabio's Redemption by : Ralph Cotton
Download or read book Sabio's Redemption written by Ralph Cotton and published by Cotton-Branch. This book was released on 2018-10-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the ranger's eyes searched, his hands deftly opened the Colt, dropped the one empty cartridge to the dirt, replaced it and snapped the chamber shut. He slipped the Colt into his tied-down holster, but loosely, knowing that he might suddenly require its use again. Some parts of hell even the devil didn't travel alone, he told himself. His gaze moved warily outward, through the raging swirl of white heat surrounding the town, out across the harsh Mexican badlands. After a moment he took the folded piece of paper from inside his riding duster and opened it as he kept an eye on the empty, dusty street. From between two adobe buildings, a skinny hound slunk out through the dust, picked up something from the dirt and raced away with it. "Dallas Fadden, you're marked off," the ranger murmured to himself under his breath. He looked at the list of names on the paper—thieves, rapists, arsonists, assassins, wanton murderers, degenerates all—the worst of the worst, his captain had proclaimed them. With a pencil stub that he pulled from under the brim of his pearl-gray sombrero, he drew a straight line through Fadden's name. On the ground at his feet, Fadden lay at the end of a long streak of bloody dirt where his trail of lawlessness had ended. A bullet hole gaped in the center of his back. The thumb of his right hand had been clipped off by the same single bullet before it bored through his heart. Seeing the bloody stub, Sam looked off in the direction the skinny hound had taken, and realized what had caused the animal to venture out before the smoke and dust had even settled. Sam folded the paper and put it away. *Preview of Ralph Cotton's Gunfight at Cold Devil at the end of this book.

Here I am in my early fifties, pretty much missed the upbringing of my three girls, separated at 40, and subsequently divorced from a beautiful lady, not only in looks but in every respect. All my own fault. To be fair Teresa did say to me that she was tired of worrying when I was out on tour or on a special assignment, and I did say I would retire from the army when I was 40 (which I did) but I then moved to special operations working for the British government and the CIA.....

Download or read book John Sayles written by David R. Shumway and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Sayles is the very paradigm of the contemporary independent filmmaker. By raising much of the funding for his films himself, Sayles functions more independently than most directors, and he has used his freedom to write and produce films with a distinctive personal style and often clearly expressed political positions. From The Return of the Secaucus Seven to Sunshine State, his films have consistently expressed progressive political positions on issues including race, gender, sexuality, class, and disability. In this study, David R. Shumway examines the defining characteristic of Sayles's cinema: its realism. Positing the filmmaker as a critical realist, Shumway explores Sayles's attention to narrative in critically acclaimed and popular films such as Matewan, Eight Men Out, Passion Fish, and Lone Star. The study also details the conditions under which Sayles's films have been produced, distributed, and exhibited, affecting the way in which these films have been understood and appreciated. In the process, Shumway presents Sayles as a teacher who tells historically accurate stories that invite audiences to consider the human world they all inhabit.
