Book excerpt: Major works spanning the medieval era to the Enlightenment from the MFA Boston's superlative collection The tremendous political, religious and cultural changes that swept across Europe in the years from 1000 to 1800 fundamentally transformed the practices and purposes of painting and sculpture--from elaborately carved and gilded medieval Christian altars to Renaissance self-portraits touting the skill of the artist to 18th-century portraits in marble of the era's leading thinkers. The 100 highlights from the impressive European art collection at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, gathered here offer an accessible introduction to the story of art from the medieval period to the Enlightenment. Modern notions of art and artists, the art market, as well as the births of art history and the art museum as an institution, all trace their origins to Europe in these centuries, which produced work of fascinating variety and enduring beauty. Artists include: Rembrandt, Rosso Fiorentino, Titian, Fragonard, Donatello, Fra Angelico, Rogier van der Weyden, Peter Paul Rubens, El Greco, Velázquez and Poussin.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to coincide with the opening of the Audrey Jones Beck building in March of 2000, this lavishly illustrated catalogue--the first single volume dedicated to this extraordinary collection--features one hundred of the most important European paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The works, which range in date from the early Renaissance to the beginning of the twentieth century, are all handsomely featured as full-page color plates. The accompanying text is highly accessible, providing interesting insights into the artists' lives and explaining--in general terms--the stylistic evolution of the history of European painting. Furthermore, important new research on unpublished works has been incorporated into the entries. The European painting collection of the Museum of Fine Arts has grown tremendously over the past fifty years through the generosity of major donors and patrons. The 1944 bequest by Edith A. and Percy S. Straus forms the foundation of the permanent collection, including works by such well-known Italian and Northern Renaissance artists as Fra Angelico, Rogier van der Weyden, and Hans Memling. The next milestone was the acquisition of the Robert Lee Blaffer Memorial Collection, which comprises splendid pictures spanning many centuries, such as major works by Giovanni di Paolo, Frans Hals, Canaletto, Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas. Purchases and gifts, including substantial donations from Samuel H. Kress and the Kress Foundation from the 1930s through the 1960s, further strengthened the holdings of Renaissance and Baroque pictures with exceptional works such as Sebastiano del Piombo's Portrait of Anton Francesco degli Albizzi and Orazio Gentileschi's Portrait of a Young Woman as a Sibyl. The renowned John A. and Audrey Jones Beck Collection includes a significant number of important Impressionist and modern paintings, represented herein with works by Edouard Manet, Gustave Caillebotte, Mary Cassatt, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Signac, Georges Braque, and Vassily Kandinsky. Represented as well are some of the museum's most important recent acquisitions, such as Still Life with Golden Bream, a stunning canvas by Francisco de Goya, and Still Life of Flowers and Fruit, a ravishing work by Jan van Huysum. With beautiful reproductions and informative commentary, Masterworks of European Painting will be of great appeal to art lovers and scholars alike.

Book excerpt: This beautiful book features masterpieces of sculpture in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum dating from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century. Celebrated works by the great European sculptors - including Luca and Andrea della Robbia, Juan Mart©Ưnez Monta©ł©♭s, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Jean-Antoine Houdon, Bertel Thorvaldsen, Antoine-Louis Barye, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Edgar Degas, and Auguste Rodin- are joined by striking new additions to the collection, notably Franz Xaver Messerschmidt's remarkable bust of a troubled and introspective man. The ninety-two selected examples are diverse in media (marble, bronze, wood, terracotta, and ivory) and size - ranging from a tiny oil lamp fantastically conceived and decorated by the Renaissance bronze sculptor Riccio to Antonio Canova's eight-foot-high Perseus with the Head of Medusa, executed in the heroic Neoclassical style. Incorporating information from the latest scholarly research and recent conservation studies, sculpture specialist Ian Wardropper discusses the history and significance of the highlighted works, each of which is reproduced with glorious new photography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the most noteworthy concepts, artists, and cultural centers of the seventeenth century through a close examination of many of its greatest paintings, sculptures, and buildings. The Baroque, rooted in classicism but with a new emphasis on emotionalism and naturalism, was the leading style of the seventeenth century. The movement exhibited both stylistic complexity and great diversity in its subject matter, from large religious works and history paintings to portraits, landscapes, and scenes of everyday life. Masters of the era included Caravaggio, whose innovations in the dramatic uses of light and shadow influenced many of the century's artists, notably Rembrandt; the sculptor, painter, and architect Bernini, with his combination of technical brilliance and expressiveness; and other familiar names such as Rubens, Poussin, Velázquez, and Vermeer. This was the era of absolute monarchs, including Spain's Habsburgs and Louis XIII and XIV of France, whose artistic patronage helped furnish their opulent palaces. But a new era of commercialism, in which artists increasingly catered to affluent collectors of the professional and merchant classes, also flourished.
