Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past four years, Mexico has been implementing its constitutional energy reform and transforming its electric power industry. Changes in law, regulation, and market structure are bringing forth new market participants and producing new levels of clean power with new technologies and expanded customer choices. In making these power sector reforms, Mexico has understood and addressed the central importance of a modernized grid. The energy sector reform laws establish a Smart Grid Program, thus committing to making Mexico's power grid capable of meeting the country's lofty clean energy goals while improving efficiencies, maintaining system reliability, and increasing its security. This Report on the Implementation of Smart Grids in Mexico responds to and complies with the new law requirements, and it is written in service of the goal of Mexico having a Smart Grid-Redes Eléctricas Inteligentes-with all the benefits such an investment can bring. This report comprises eight main sections, and it represents a compilation of data and information from many sources that document Mexico's progress in implementing a Smart Grid. The content for each section was developed with the participation of knowledge experts in each topic area, who are acknowledged above. Readers may want to view the report as a reference guide on the eight main topic areas that are presented. Before discussing each section of the report below, we offer an overall assessment.

Book excerpt: As a recognized leader in efforts to mitigate global climate change, the Government of Mexico (GOM) works proactively to reduce emissions, demonstrating strong political will and capacity to comprehensively address climate change. Since 2010, the U.S. government (USG) has supported these efforts by partnering with Mexico under the Enhancing Capacity for Low Emission Development Strategies (EC-LEDS) program. Through the program, the USG has partnered with Mexico's Ministry of Energy (SENER), as well as other government agencies, to support GOM in reaching its clean energy and climate change goals. Specifically, the EC-LEDS program is supporting GOM's clean energy goal of generating 35% of its electricity from renewable energy (RE) by 2024. EC-LEDS, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the U.S Department of Energy's (DOE's) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), has been collaborating with SENER and GOM interagency working group - the Consejo Consultivo para las Energias Renovables (Consultative Council on Renewable Energy) - to create a grid integration roadmap for variable RE.1 A key objective in creating a grid integration roadmap is assessing likely impacts of wind and solar energy on the power system and modifying planning and operations accordingly. This paper applies best practices in conducting a grid integration study to the Mexican context.

Book excerpt: This Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report (IPCC-SRREN) assesses the potential role of renewable energy in the mitigation of climate change. It covers the six most important renewable energy sources - bioenergy, solar, geothermal, hydropower, ocean and wind energy - as well as their integration into present and future energy systems. It considers the environmental and social consequences associated with the deployment of these technologies, and presents strategies to overcome technical as well as non-technical obstacles to their application and diffusion. SRREN brings a broad spectrum of technology-specific experts together with scientists studying energy systems as a whole. Prepared following strict IPCC procedures, it presents an impartial assessment of the current state of knowledge: it is policy relevant but not policy prescriptive. SRREN is an invaluable assessment of the potential role of renewable energy for the mitigation of climate change for policymakers, the private sector, and academic researchers.

Book excerpt: Although economic openness left Mexico more exposed to the global financial crisis than some of its Latin American peers, its economic profile has since allowed it to bounce back as global trade and investment flows recover. Meanwhile, Mexico has avoided the recent economic weakness of more commodity-dependent economies in the region. At the same time, past structural reforms are starting to bear fruit and bode well for growth prospects in the medium to long term.

Their development will take decades of extensive public and private effort to achieve technology breakthroughs and commercial maturity. Government research programs are indispensable for catalyzing the development process. This report maps the IEA countries' current efforts to research, develop and deploy the interlocking elements that constitute a "hydrogen economy", including CO2 capture and storage when hydrogen is produced out of fossil fuels. It provides an overview of what is being done, and by whom, covering an extensive complexity of national government R & D programs. The survey highlights the potential for exploiting the benefits of the international cooperation. This book draws primarily upon information contributed by IEA governments. In virtually all the IEA countries, important R & D and policy efforts on hydrogen and fuel cells are in place and expanding. Some are fully-integrated, government-funded programs, some are a key element in an overall strategy spread among multiple public and private efforts. The large amount of information provided in this publication reflects the vast array of technologies and logistics required to build the "hydrogen economy."--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: The second-largest economy in Latin America, Mexico seems poised to enter a new growth phase as the government of Enrique Peña Nieto implements radical changes in a number of sectors across the economy. The reforms, aimed at raising the competitiveness of the Mexican economy, have the potential to establish Mexico’s position as a regional powerhouse. Optimism surrounding the recent wave of reforms, coupled with a stable macroeconomic environment and an improved credit rating from international agencies, has placed Mexico centre-stage. Despite slower than anticipated growth of 1.1% in 2013, a wave of reforms affecting a range of sectors is expected to bring a new dynamism to the economy and continue to attract increasing amounts of foreign investment. A highly anticipated energy reform approved by Congress in 2013 will for the first time in decades open the nationalised oil industry to foreign investment, while a new public-private partnership law is set to provide the climate of legal certainty needed to attract private investment in the myriad of sectors undergoing expansion. While challenges remain, in particular informality and deficient domestic supply chains, growth prospects remain positive for the second-largest economy in Latin America.

Book excerpt: A component in the America's Energy Future study, Electricity from Renewable Resources examines the technical potential for electric power generation with alternative sources such as wind, solar-photovoltaic, geothermal, solar-thermal, hydroelectric, and other renewable sources. The book focuses on those renewable sources that show the most promise for initial commercial deployment within 10 years and will lead to a substantial impact on the U.S. energy system. A quantitative characterization of technologies, this book lays out expectations of costs, performance, and impacts, as well as barriers and research and development needs. In addition to a principal focus on renewable energy technologies for power generation, the book addresses the challenges of incorporating such technologies into the power grid, as well as potential improvements in the national electricity grid that could enable better and more extensive utilization of wind, solar-thermal, solar photovoltaics, and other renewable technologies.
