Book excerpt: This is a picture of Antonio Francisco Gomez and his twin sister, Margarita Teresa Gomez. They live on the great hacienda, or plantation, of Senor Fernandez, in the wonderful country of Mexico, and they are eight years old. The boy is named Antonio for Saint Antonio and Francisco for his father, and the girl is named Margarita for Saint Margarita and Teresa for her mother. But nobody ever thinks of calling the Twins by all these names. They are called just Tonio and Tita, to save time. Even their father isn't called by his long name! Everybody calls him Pancho-that is, everybody but the Twins, of course. Their mother isn't called anything at all for short. She is always called Dona Teresa. I do not know why this is, unless perhaps it is because she can make better tortillas, and chicken mole, and candied sweet potatoes than any one else on the whole hacienda.

Book excerpt: Lucy Fitch Perkins (July 12, 1865 - March 18, 1937) was an American illustrator and writer of children's books, known best for Dutch Twins (1911) and its sequels, the Twins series.Lucy Fitch was born on July 12, 1865 in Maples, Indiana, to Appleton Howe and Elizabeth (Bennett) Fitch. Her father was a teacher who moved to Maples to co-found a barrel stave factory. Her mother was a teacher. Fitch moved with her mother to Hopkinton, Massachusetts, to live with her father's patents as her father tried to recover from a financial setback from the Panic of 1873. Unhappy with the Hopkinton schools, the family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1879.Fitch graduated from high school in 1883 and moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to attend the Museum of Fine Arts School. She met Dwight H. Perkins in her third year at the school. Fitch started to write children's fiction on a freelance basis for Young Folks. She graduated in 1886 and took a job as an illustrator for the Prang Educational Company of Boston. A year later, she followed Walter Scott Perry to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, to become his assistant. Fitch left on August 18, 1891, to marry Perkins and move to Chicago, Illinois. Perkins initially tended to the household, writing only on occasion. However, after her husband struggled in the aftermath of the Panic of 1893, Perkins began to write to supplement the family income. The Chicago office of the Prang Educational Company employed Perkins for the next 10 years, offering her opportunities to teach and illustrate. In 1905, her husband was appointed chief architect for the Chicago Board of Education, allowing them to support the construction of a new house in Evanston, Illinois

Book Synopsis The Spectacle of Twins in American Literature and Popular Culture by : Karen Dillon
Download or read book The Spectacle of Twins in American Literature and Popular Culture written by Karen Dillon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural fantasy of twins imagines them as physically and behaviorally identical. Media portrayals consistently offer the spectacle of twins who share an insular closeness and perform a supposed alikeness--standing side by side, speaking and acting in unison. Treating twinship as a cultural phenomenon, this first comprehensive study of twins in American literature and popular culture examines the historical narrative--within the discourses of experimentation, aberrance and eugenics--and how it has shaped their representations in the 20th and 21st centuries.

They signed an unwritten oath to never rat on each other. That means they never admitted to doing something wrong or wild and crazy. They either both confessed they were guilty, or both confessed to being innocent. Their bond and loyalty were unbreakable, which the average person does not understand. When in trouble, they became one person with a united front. It was never discussed, just understood.
