Book excerpt: School-centric views of Latinx parent involvement value preexisting particular middle -class and Eurocentric forms of parent participation in the classroom and in the school. In contrast, there is a growing body of research that looks at Latinx parenting practices from asset-based perspectives. However, there are few studies that illustrate the Mexican immigrant mothers' points of view. The purpose of this qualitative study was to document and understand what Mexican immigrant mothers perceived to be good approaches to parenting. The conceptual framework drew from Chicana/Latina feminist epistemology (Delgado Bernal, 1998) and community cultural wealth (Yosso, 2005). The study was conducted using platicas as a method and methodology. The following themes emerged (1) consejos, (2) faith/catholicism (3) estar al pendiente (4) educacion, (5) setting bounderies and being consistent, and (7) obstacles. Results showed that Mexican immigrant mothers are deeply involved and do a series of parenting practices that help their children be ready to learn.

Drawing on more than three years of ethnographic research, Gabrielle Oliveira offers a unique look at the many consequences of maternal migration. Oliveira illuminates the life trajectories of separated siblings, including their divergent paths, and the everyday struggles that the undocumented mother may go through in order to be a good parent to all of her children, no matter where they live. Despite these efforts, the book uncovers the far-reaching effects of maternal migration that influence both the children who accompany their mothers to New York City, and those who remain in Mexico.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

An exploratory survey research design was used to gather information from these individuals. Purposive sampling was used to identify 33 Mexican immigrant women in support groups in Yolo County and Solano County, California. Statistically significant relationships were found between level of English and perceptions of the woman's role in the Mexican culture, as well as level of English and perceived social stigma. Amount of time in the United States and beliefs surrounding culturally competent services, as well as education level and perceptions of the woman's role in the Mexican culture were among other statistically significant relationships. No other statistically significant relationships emerged. Findings suggest that lower education level and lower language level results in more traditional beliefs may impact the seeking of services. Future research is important to understand the likelihood of seeking services for this population in the United States. Implications for multi-level social work practice are discussed.

This transition may be especially critical for those in the largest immigrant group in the United States, Mexican families and their children. Using Critical Race Theory, the aim of the current study was to give Mexican immigrant parents a voice in their experiences and perspectives regarding their children's transition to school. Using two distinct phases, the current study examined Mexican immigrant parents' perspectives on and experiences with their children's transition to kindergarten. In the first phase, information from interviews with 7 Mexican immigrant parents and feedback from an expert panel were used to revise the Family Experiences and Involvement in Transition (FEIT) survey (McIntyre et al, 2007), with the intent of making it more culturally sensitive and relevant, and a better reflection of Mexican families' perspectives and experiences. In the second phase of the study, 44 Mexican immigrant parents completed the newly adapted FEIT (FEIT-A) measure, providing some initial data about its utility, relevance, and psychometric properties.
