Book excerpt: As Metro stretches to Tysons Corner and beyond, this paperback edition features a new preface from the author. Drivers in the nation's capital face a host of hazards: high-speed traffic circles, presidential motorcades, jaywalking tourists, and bewildering signs that send unsuspecting motorists from the Lincoln Memorial into suburban Virginia in less than two minutes. And parking? Don't bet on it unless you're in the fast lane of the Capital Beltway during rush hour. Little wonder, then, that so many residents and visitors rely on the Washington Metro, the 106-mile rapid transit system that serves the District of Columbia and its inner suburbs. In the first comprehensive history of the Metro, Zachary M. Schrag tells the story of the Great Society Subway from its earliest rumblings to the present day, from Arlington to College Park, Eisenhower to Marion Barry. Unlike the pre–World War II rail systems of New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia, the Metro was built at a time when most American families already owned cars, and when most American cities had dedicated themselves to freeways, not subways. Why did the nation's capital take a different path? What were the consequences of that decision? Using extensive archival research as well as oral history, Schrag argues that the Metro can be understood only in the political context from which it was born: the Great Society liberalism of the Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon administrations. The Metro emerged from a period when Americans believed in public investments suited to the grandeur and dignity of the world's richest nation. The Metro was built not merely to move commuters, but in the words of Lyndon Johnson, to create "a place where the city of man serves not only the needs of the body and the demands of commerce but the desire for beauty and the hunger for community." Schrag scrutinizes the project from its earliest days, including general planning, routes, station architecture, funding decisions, land-use impacts, and the behavior of Metro riders. The story of the Great Society Subway sheds light on the development of metropolitan Washington, postwar urban policy, and the promises and limits of rail transit in American cities.

From the quaint early days of small horse-drawn cars to the modern "streamliners" of the twentieth century, the stories are all here. Join author John DeFerrari on a joyride through the fascinating history of streetcars in the nation's capital.

This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are a frequent rider of Metro or a tourist who has been to the city many times, you might wonder: What is at each Metro stop? Is there anything at each stop that is interesting to see? Is it even worth getting off the train, or is some hidden gem being missed? This book will answer those questions, and it will also cover the usual tourist attractions, including the museums, monuments and memorials on the National Mall. In fact, the author worked and volunteered for the National Park Service on the National Mall for over six years. This means there are insights concerning the main tourist areas that you probably won't find in another book. However, this book is much more than a tourist book, and sometimes it is less than a tourist book. Readers who are looking for great detail, including the history, architecture and a long narrative about different places, should buy one of the many other tourist books available. What you will get from this book is a brief review of places of interest along the Metro route. This book is also about the culture of Metro and as such the culture of the Washington Metropolitan area (DMV) and, frequently, the nation. This includes culture-war battles in the DC area (DMV) over the names of a county and an airport. It also includes culture-war battles over some monuments and memorials as well as a theater. Finally, the Civil War statue in Old Town Alexandria is discussed. There are also a few stories built in here and there and some insights about current issues in the area. These issues include everything from race relations and gentrification to the name "Redskins" for the Washington football team. Finally, the book describes an adventure. You may be a long-time rider of Metro, but there is still an adventure waiting for you within these pages. I hope you have a great ride.
