Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades several remarkable new results were discovered about harmonic measure in the complex plane. This book provides a careful survey of these results and an introduction to the branch of analysis which contains them. Many of these results, due to Bishop, Carleson, Jones, Makarov, Wolff and others, appear here in paperback for the first time. The book is accessible to students who have completed standard graduate courses in real and complex analysis. The first four chapters provide the needed background material on univalent functions, potential theory, and extremal length, and each chapter has many exercises to further inform and teach the readers.

Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a great deal of activity in both the theoretical and applied aspects of partial differential equations, with emphasis on realistic engineering applications, which usually involve lack of smoothness. On March 21-25, 1990, the University of Chicago hosted a workshop that brought together approximately fortyfive experts in theoretical and applied aspects of these subjects. The workshop was a vehicle for summarizing the current status of research in these areas, and for defining new directions for future progress - this volume contains articles from participants of the workshop.

Book excerpt: This collection of reprinted 'Featured Reviews' published in Mathematical Reviews (MR) in 1995 and 1996 makes widely available informed reviews of some of the best mathematics published recently. 'Featured Reviews' were introduced in MR at the beginning of 1995 in part to provide some guidance to the current research-level literature. With the exponential growth of publications in mathematical research in the first half-century of MR, it had become essentially impossible for users of MR to identify the most important new research-level books and papers, especially in fields outside of the users' own expertise. This work identifies some of the "best" new publications, papers, and books that are expected to have a significant impact on the area of pure or applied mathematics with which researchers are concerned. All of the papers reviewed here contain interesting new ideas or applications, a deep synthesis of existing ideas, or any combination of these. The volume is intended to lead the user to important new research across all fields covered by MR.

Book excerpt: The present monograph on analytic functions coincides to a lar[extent with the presentation of the modern theory of single-value analytic functions given in my earlier works "Le theoreme de Picarc Borel et la theorie des fonctions meromorphes" (Paris: Gauthier-Villar 1929) and "Eindeutige analytische Funktionen" (Die Grundlehren dt mathematischen Wissenschaften in Einzeldarstellungen, VoL 46, 1: edition Berlin: Springer 1936, 2nd edition Berlin-Gottingen-Heidelberg Springer 1953). In these presentations I have strived to make the individual result and their proofs readily understandable and to treat them in the ligh of certain guiding principles in a unified way. A decisive step in thi direction within the theory of entire and meromorphic functions consiste- in replacing the classical representation of these functions through ca nonical products with more general tools from the potential theor (Green's formula and especially the Poisson-Jensen formula). On thi foundation it was possible to introduce the quantities (the characteristic the proximity and the counting functions) which are definitive for th

Book excerpt: The author obtains some classification result for the mapping class groups of compact orientable surfaces in terms of measure equivalence. In particular, the mapping class groups of different closed surfaces cannot be measure equivalent. Moreover, the author gives various examples of discrete groups which are not measure equivalent to the mapping class groups. In the course of the proof, the author investigates amenability in a measurable sense for the actions of the mapping class group on the boundary at infinity of the curve complex and on the Thurston boundary and, using this investigation, proves that the mapping class group of a compact orientable surface is exact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent developments in geometric measure theory and harmonic analysis have led to new and deep results concerning the regularity of the support of measures which behave "asymptotically" (for balls of small radius) as the Euclidean volume. A striking feature of these results is that they actually characterize flatness of the support in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the measure. Such characterizations have led to important new progress in the study of harmonic measure fornon-smooth domains. This volume provides an up-to-date overview and an introduction to the research literature in this area. The presentation follows a series of five lectures given by Carlos Kenig at the 2000 Arkansas Spring Lecture Series. The original lectures have been expanded and updated to reflectthe rapid progress in this field. A chapter on the planar case has been added to provide a historical perspective. Additional background has been included to make the material accessible to advanced graduate students and researchers in harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory.

Book excerpt: The author introduces the notion of a Galois extension of commutative $S$-algebras ($E_\infty$ ring spectra), often localized with respect to a fixed homology theory. There are numerous examples, including some involving Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra of commutative rings, real and complex topological $K$-theory, Lubin-Tate spectra and cochain $S$-algebras. He establishes the main theorem of Galois theory in this generality. Its proof involves the notions of separable and etale extensions of commutative $S$-algebras, and the Goerss-Hopkins-Miller theory for $E_\infty$ mapping spaces. He shows that the global sphere spectrum $S$ is separably closed, using Minkowski's discriminant theorem, and he estimates the separable closure of its localization with respect to each of the Morava $K$-theories. He also defines Hopf-Galois extensions of commutative $S$-algebras and studies the complex cobordism spectrum $MU$ as a common integral model for all of the local Lubin-Tate Galois extensions. The author extends the duality theory for topological groups from the classical theory for compact Lie groups, via the topological study by J. R. Klein and the $p$-complete study for $p$-compact groups by T. Bauer, to a general duality theory for stably dualizable groups in the $E$-local stable homotopy category, for any spectrum $E$.

Book excerpt: In this paper the authors apply their results on the geometry of polygons in infinitesimal symmetric spaces and symmetric spaces and buildings to four problems in algebraic group theory. Two of these problems are generalizations of the problems of finding the constraints on the eigenvalues (resp. singular values) of a sum (resp. product) when the eigenvalues (singular values) of each summand (factor) are fixed. The other two problems are related to the nonvanishing of the structure constants of the (spherical) Hecke and representation rings associated with a split reductive algebraic group over $\mathbb{Q}$ and its complex Langlands' dual. The authors give a new proof of the Saturation Conjecture for $GL(\ell)$ as a consequence of their solution of the corresponding saturation problem for the Hecke structure constants for all split reductive algebraic groups over $\mathbb{Q}$.

This is studied in connection with factorization theorems for (e.g., multi-Toeplitz, multi-analytic, etc.) operators on Fock spaces. These results lead to entropy inequalities and entropy formulas for positive multi-Toeplitz kernels on free semigroups (resp. multi-analytic operators) and consequences concerning the extreme points of the unit ball of the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebra $F ninfty$. We obtain several geometric characterizations of the central intertwining lifting, a maximal principle, and a permanence principle for the noncommutative commutant lifting theorem. Under certain natural conditions, we find explicit forms for the maximal entropy solution of this multivariable commutant lifting theorem. All these results are used to solve maximal entropy interpolation problems in several variables. We obtain explicit forms for the maximal entropy solution (as well as its entropy) of the Sarason, Caratheodory-Schur, and Nevanlinna-Pick type interpolation problems for the noncommutative (resp. commutative) analytic Toeplitz algebra $F ninfty$ (resp. $W ninfty$) and their tensor products with $B({\mathcal H , {\mathcal K )$. In particular, we provide explicit forms for the maximal entropy solutions of several interpolation problems on the unit ball of $\mathbb{C n$.

The largest of these subsets has a natural interpretation as the space of invariant means. II$ 1$-factor representations of a class of C$*$-algebras considered by Sorin Popa are also studied. These algebras are shown to have an unexpected variety of II$ 1$-factor representations. In addition to developing some general theory we also show that these ideas are related to numerous other problems inoperator algebras.
