Book excerpt: This manual defines methods for estimating selectivity of gillnet and longline gears, with particular reference to the use of these gears in abundance surveys. The manual illustrates how gear design, the basic concepts of size selection and fish morphometric data can be used to model selectivity. Statistical estimation methods are described in detail, and examples given of their application in spreadsheets. The efficient use of these gears in abundance and research surveys is also discussed. Although the manual concentrates on gillnets and longlines, the methods given are general enough to be relevant to any research involving gear selectivity

Book excerpt: This document elaborates the revised International Standard Statistical Classification of Fishing Gear (ISSCFG), as endorsed and adopted for implementation by the FAO Coordinating Working Party on Fishery Statistics (CWP) at its Twenty-fifth Session in February 2016 in Rome, Italy. The classification applies to commercial, subsistence and recreational fisheries in marine and freshwater fisheries. The document provides definitions and illustrations of the configuration and mode of operation of typical fishing gears. The primary purpose is to assist FAO Members, regional fishery bodies, as well as those working on fishery statistics and management, to correctly attribute and report fisheries catches made by different gear types. The document also contributes to the prevention, deterrence and elimination of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing by providing monitoring, control and surveillance personnel with information to identify the type of fishing gear with regard to licence and authorization to carry out fishing operations. Finally, the document also provides context and references for some contemporary conservation issues related to major fishing gear types; it can therefore be used as a reference text for students and researchers in fisheries and marine conservation.

Book excerpt: Fishing selectivity can be defined as the ability to target and capture fish by species, size, or sex (or a combination of these) during harvesting operations, allowing all incidental by-catch to be released unharmed. This manual outlines the steps and processes necessary to monitor selectivity demonstrations, collect data on selectivity, and validate scientific research on selectivity under normal fishing operations. Some mathematical and statistical examples are shown to clarify the methodologies and to facilitate understanding and application. The manual is intended to provide assistance to technicians and senior fishing crew in the planning, execution, and reporting of size and species trials and demonstrations with mobile and fixed gears. Sections of the manual cover measurement of selectivity, experiment design, experimental methods, data analysis, and the reporting of results. Case studies of experiments using both fixed and mobile gear are included.

Book excerpt: In developing countries, traditional fishermen are important food contributors, yet technological information and development assistance to third-world nations often focuses on agriculture and industrial fishing, without addressing the needs of independent, small-scale fishermen. This book explores technological considerations of small-scale, primitive fishing technologies, and describes innovative, relatively inexpensive methods and tools that have already been successfully applied in developing countries. It offers practical information about all aspects of small-scale fishing, including boat design and construction, fishing methods and gear, artificial reef construction and fish aggregating devices, techniques for coastal mariculture, and simple methods for processing and preserving fish once they are caught. Fisheries Technologies for Developing Countries is illustrated throughout with photographs of the devices and construction methods described in the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norwegian spring-spawning herring and Northeast Arctic cod are two of the largest and commercially most important fish stocks in the North Atlantic. Both these stocks have their spawning fields along the Norwegian coast and they have been the major target species for Norwegian fisheries for a millennium. They are also among the few fish stocks in the world which have been systematically investigated and monitored for more than a century. The scientific results, arrived at early in the 20th century for these two stocks, formed the basis for much of the development in international fisheries science later on. This book describes how fisheries, fisheries science, and management for Norwegian spring-spawning herring and Northeast Arctic cod developed during the 20th century. Over time, both populations developed serious decline in stock size and yield due to overfishing. The herring stock was in a state of collapse for about 20 years. Management measures that were then introduced permitted both stocks to recover in the 1990s. The contributors to the book have all been working as fisheries scientists at the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen.

Book excerpt: A diverse range of fishing gears and methods have been evolved to capture a wide range of species constituting the fisheries in different parts of the world. Significant developments have taken place in the fishing gear materials, design and fabrication and degree of sophistication in the operation and handling of fishing gears, in the last three decades. Advances in vessel technology, precision electronic navigation systems, high definition fish finders and sonar, gear monitoring systems and computerised control systems have increased the precision and efficiency of fishing. These developments while increasing the fish production have also brought to focus emerging issues such as the need for long term sustainability of fishery resources, fishery enhancement, protection of biodiversity, environmental safety and energy conservation in fish harvesting, which are being addressed in different parts of the fishery world with varying degrees of success. This publication brings together latest information in the field of commercial fishing technology and provides an overview of the important fishing gears, their design, fabrication and operation with focus on recent advances in responsible focuses on the requirements of the graduate and post graduate studies of fisheries science and fishing gear technology. Contents Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Fishing Gear Materials; Chapter 3: Classification of Fishing Gears; Chapter 4: Basic Principles of Fishing Gear Design and Construction; Chapter 5: Design and Operation of Major Fishing Gears, Trawls, Purse seines, Lines, Gill nets & trammel nets, Traps; Chapter 6: Fish Detection Methods; Chapter 7: Selectivity of Fishing Gears; Chapter 8: Energy Conservation in Fishing; Chapter 9: Responsible Fishing.
