Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Quantitative Organic Analysis the student taking up quantitative organic analysis will find at the outset how greatly it differs from the corresponding work in inorganic chemistry. The methods employed in the latter are so much simpler, more rapid, and above all, so much more capable of giving accurate results. They are essentially based on ionic reactions in which the time factor scarcely enters at all and they admit of exhaustive systematic generalization; thus, all soluble chlorides can be estimated by precipitation with silver nitrate, soluble sulphates by precipitation with barium chloride, and so on. With due care such processes admit of very accurate results. It is different in the case of organic substances, where the ionic theory has little if any application, and reactions are governed by a whole series of factors of which time is by far the most important. The influence of time is one which must never be overlooked even in what may appear to be the simplest of reactions. It pervades almost every type of chemical interchange - hydrolysis, oxidation, reduction and the formation of condensation products. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organic Analysis: A Manual of the Descriptive and Analytical Chemistry of Certain Carbon Compounds in Common Use The operator in chemical analysis requires for his direction a system Of descriptive ch.emistry, to be as nearly complete as possible. In resorting to the hand-books of general chemistry for the record of physical and chemical constants the analyst is Often disappointed. It belongs, therefore, to analytical chemistry to furnish chemical descriptions with special precision, and this is a service promoting independent chemical work. As a mere changeful body of directions, giving the latest expedients in methods, analytical 0chemistry cannot claim to have educational value. But as an operative introduction to the character and deportment of compounds, analysis becomes a logical mode of study, fruitful of important results. For certain common carbon compounds it has been under taken to furnish in this work, first, systematic chemical description, and thereupon the methods Of analytical procedure, qualitative quantitative, and for proofs of purity, all with liberal citations Of the authorities for convenience of further reading. In the references an order is Observed as follows: (1) name Of the con tributor, (2) year Of the contribution, (3) volume and page, first Of original and then of contemporary publications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Organic Analysis: An Elementary Course in the Identification of Organic Compounds The teaching of Qualitative Organic Analysis is gradually receiving recognition as an important factor in the training Of the chemist. In 1905, the subject was taught in only two or three universities; ten years later courses were offered in from fifteen to twenty of the leading schools in this country; and in 1918 the subject was prescribed for all colleges undertaking the training of chemists under the supervision of the United States Government. Only the armistice prevented the institution of this sweeping innovation in chemical curricula. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Instruction in Quantitative Chemical Analysis: From the Last Whatever has been proposed, either in this country or on the Continent, to facilitate the path of analysis, has been tested, and, when found sound and practical, has been introduced in the proper place. Every doubtful point has been rigidly subjected to repeated experiments, errors corrected and faults amended, and many new processes added from the Author's ample experience in his own laboratory." Among the additions there introduced, the volumetrical methods of determining the constituents of commercial articles were pointed out as particularly important for economizing time, and assisting in every way the practical chemist. The entire work has been re-cast, considerably simplified, and almost re-written. New matter has been introduced to the extent of one-fourth of the whole volume. Many of the processes the best then known, but rendered obsolete by the progress of the science - have been replaced by others more certain, simple, and efficient; and this is particularly the case with the volumetrical processes. Among other changes, I may specify the analytical processes for clays, soils, cast iron, atmospheric air, and lead ores. This work on Quantitative Analysis, although in itself complete, may be regarded as a sequel to the Author's Qualitative Analysis - a work which has been found of the highest value - nay, almost indispensable - to the student of chemistry, whatever other books on the subject he may possess. As a guide to Analytical Chemistry, the merits of the present volume are of the highest order. The arrangement is simple, methodical, and consecutive; the theoretical explanations are appropriate, clear, and intelligible; the language plain, and the directness and honesty of purpose, together with the just appreciation of the labors of others displayed throughout, must commend it to every one engaged in studying, teaching, or practising Chemistry; and I have great pleasure in being the medium of presenting it to the English public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Practice of Commercial Organic Analysis I at one time hoped to make a single volume suffice to cover the whole ground of proximate analysis and assay of commercial organic products, but, finding that the subject rapidly grew, and that the information already compiled would become stale and lose much of its value if its publication were long delayed, I decided to publish Volume I. Separately. In the arrangement of the subject-matter, I have ignored the more obscure chemical relationships and have preferred grouping the bodies treated of in a manner which, it is hoped, will be found convenient for practical reference, though such an arrangement has necessitated some inconsistencies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Chemical Analysis, Vol. 2 The second volume of this Edition Of Fresenius' Quantitative Chemical Analysis is, from Part II. Where the Special Part begins, not merely a new edition in the ordinary sense of the word, but rather an almost entirely new book, there being scarcely two consecutive pages which are identical with those Of the previous edition. The Special Part includes the analysis Of potable waters, mineral waters, technical products, and minerals, as well as the estimation of sugars, alcohol, tanning materials, and anthracene; also the estimation Of the inorganic matter in plants, the analysis Of soils and manures, and the examination Of atmospheric air. This part has been greatly extended and made far more com prehensive than in the preceding edition, consequent on the application Of chemical analysis 'for the purposes of Hygiene, Commerce, Technical Industries, Metallurgy, and Agriculture, having become far more widely recognised than formerly. The thorough revision of the Special Part afforded the late author of the book an Opportunity Of introducing the various analytical processes which had been published since the appear ance of the former edition, such as Volhard's method of estimating silver, Bunsen's process for separating arsenic from antimony in the analysis of pyrites, and Kjeldahl's method for estimating organic nitrogen, including the various modifications of it. Which have been proposed also new processes for the analysis Of argol. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Elementary Quantitative Chemical Analysis: For Students of Agriculture Owing to the growing demand for quantitative analytical chemistry by those engaged in the study of agriculture, it seemed to the authors that the presentation of the fundamental methods of agricultural analysis as carried out in the laboratories of the American Experiment Stations would be desirable. While this book is designed primarily as an elementary quantitative guide for the use of agricultural students, it may also be used for the work in general elementary quantitative analysis. This text-book is the outgrowth of several years' experience in teaching quantitative analysis to students specializing in Agriculture, Chemistry, Medicine, and Household Science. No attempt has been made to present a complete treatise on quantitative analysis; but a few typical exercises have been chosen to illustrate the fundamental principles and the most important methods of manipulation. To further the interest in this work, the student should be encouraged to do considerable outside reading, and there should be available for his use a number of the best books of reference. In the Appendix will be found a list of some of the most important works having a bearing on this subject, while throughout the text reference is made to the original literature. The gravimetric exercises and the work outlined under Acidimetry and Alkalimetry, together with the analysis of Milk or Feeding Material and Fertilizer, comprise the work usually accomplished by the agricultural students in one semester. Those students who desire more quantitative analysis complete the remainder of the exercises in another semester. Owing to the importance of the calculation of analytical data, this subject has been treated in considerable detail in Part V (Stoichiometry). The matter presented is arranged to be studied in conjunction with the regular laboratory exercises. In addition to the methods of solving problems, a large number of problems is given for practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Quantitative Chemical Analysis: For the Use of Students The system adopted is to teach at first the determination, indi vidually, of the constituents of compounds, composed of elements which will afterward, very frequently, be found variously asso ointed, particularly in mineral analysis; and then to teach the quantitative separation of these elements, in the analysis of com pounds containing a number of them; advancing, step by step, from the analysis of compounds of similar character to the analysis of more complicated ones, involving a knowledge and application of what has preceded. In addition to the series of what may be called strictly mineral have been added a number of analyses of substances of an organic character, found in commerce, which will give the student an insight into the work which will probably be required of him as a practical chemist. The range of these is necessarily restricted, as it is desired to keep the work within the limits of a simple handbook.
