Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible introduction to the essential quantitative methods for making valuable business decisions Quantitative methods-research techniques used to analyze quantitative data-enable professionals to organize and understand numbers and, in turn, to make good decisions. Quantitative Methods: An Introduction for Business Management presents the application of quantitative mathematical modeling to decision making in a business management context and emphasizes not only the role of data in drawing conclusions, but also the pitfalls of undiscerning reliance of software packages that implement standard statistical procedures. With hands-on applications and explanations that are accessible to readers at various levels, the book successfully outlines the necessary tools to make smart and successful business decisions. Progressing from beginner to more advanced material at an easy-to-follow pace, the author utilizes motivating examples throughout to aid readers interested in decision making and also provides critical remarks, intuitive traps, and counterexamples when appropriate. The book begins with a discussion of motivations and foundations related to the topic, with introductory presentations of concepts from calculus to linear algebra. Next, the core ideas of quantitative methods are presented in chapters that explore introductory topics in probability, descriptive and inferential statistics, linear regression, and a discussion of time series that includes both classical topics and more challenging models. The author also discusses linear programming models and decision making under risk as well as less standard topics in the field such as game theory and Bayesian statistics. Finally, the book concludes with a focus on selected tools from multivariate statistics, including advanced regression models and data reduction methods such as principal component analysis, factor analysis, and cluster analysis. The book promotes the importance of an analytical approach, particularly when dealing with a complex system where multiple individuals are involved and have conflicting incentives. A related website features Microsoft Excel® workbooks and MATLAB® scripts to illustrate concepts as well as additional exercises with solutions. Quantitative Methods is an excellent book for courses on the topic at the graduate level. The book also serves as an authoritative reference and self-study guide for financial and business professionals, as well as readers looking to reinforce their analytical skills.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Quantitative Organic Analysis the student taking up quantitative organic analysis will find at the outset how greatly it differs from the corresponding work in inorganic chemistry. The methods employed in the latter are so much simpler, more rapid, and above all, so much more capable of giving accurate results. They are essentially based on ionic reactions in which the time factor scarcely enters at all and they admit of exhaustive systematic generalization; thus, all soluble chlorides can be estimated by precipitation with silver nitrate, soluble sulphates by precipitation with barium chloride, and so on. With due care such processes admit of very accurate results. It is different in the case of organic substances, where the ionic theory has little if any application, and reactions are governed by a whole series of factors of which time is by far the most important. The influence of time is one which must never be overlooked even in what may appear to be the simplest of reactions. It pervades almost every type of chemical interchange - hydrolysis, oxidation, reduction and the formation of condensation products. Book excerpt: "The book provides a reference point for beginning educational researchers to grasp the most pertinent elements of designing and conducting research..." —Megan Tschannen-Moran, The College of William & Mary Quantitative Research in Education: A Primer, Second Edition is a brief and practical text designed to allay anxiety about quantitative research. Award-winning authors Wayne K. Hoy and Curt M. Adams first introduce readers to the nature of research and science, and then present the meaning of concepts and research problems as they dispel notions that quantitative research is too difficult, too theoretical, and not practical. Rich with concrete examples and illustrations, the Primer emphasizes conceptual understanding and the practical utility of quantitative methods while teaching strategies and techniques for developing original research hypotheses. The Second Edition includes suggestions for empirical investigation and features a new section on self-determination theory, examples from the latest research, a concluding chapter illustrating the practical applications of quantitative research, and much more. This accessible Primer is perfect for students and researchers who want a quick understanding of the process of scientific inquiry and who want to learn how to effectively create and test ideas.

Book excerpt: This concise text discusses a wide range of quantitative research methods, including advanced techniques such as logic regression, multilevel modeling, and structural equation modeling. Because the text emphasizes concepts rather than mathematics and computation formulas, it is accessible to a wide range of users of research. Professional practitioners in areas such education, business, social work, and psychology can gain an understanding of research methods sufficient to base their work on advanced research in their fields. The text discusses the quantitative designs and analytic techniques most needed by students in the social sciences and in applied disciplines such as education, social work, and business. It teaches what the various methods mean, when to use them, and how to interpret their results. Since it emphasizes general understanding rather than mathematical foundations, students are able to review a broad range of methods in a comparatively short space.

Book excerpt: Using Qualitative Methods In Organizational Research offers a broad, overall description of qualitative research with the objective of facilitating the greater integration of qualitative and quantitative methods in organizational research. The book provides a look at the methods and tactics of qualitative research for both generating and testing management theories. It includes guidelines for deciding whether to use qualitative methods and overviews of four specific research designs. It describes how qualitative data is collected and analyzed and when and how to quantitatively analyze qualitative data. The author articulates the critical roles for reliability and validity and in the final chapter offers conclusions and recommendations for writing articles that report qualitative studies. Using Qualitative Methods In Organizational Research is appropriate for courses intended to introduce students to qualitative methods, for those traditional quantitative researchers interested in expanding their research methodology base, and for those interested in gaining additional insight into understanding which methods to use in future research.

The publication discusses the determination of sulfur and phosphorus, as well as the alkali-nitrate fusion method for converting organic phosphorus to orthophosphate and Woy's procedure for weighing phosphorus as phosphomolybdic anhydride. The text also reviews the determination of methoxyl and ethoxyl and acetyl groups; determination of neutralization equivalent and molecular weights; and determination of volatile fatty acids. The manuscript is a dependable reference for readers interested in the chemistry of natural products.

(2019) written by Centers of Disease Control and published by WHO Regional Office for Europe. This book was released on 2019-02-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A life-course approach to health and well-being has become a pillar in health policy-making; for example, Member States of the WHO European Region in the 2015 Minsk Declaration resolved to make greater use of a life-course approach in health policies. However, strategies for implementation of a life-course approach, and a plan for monitoring and evaluating this implementation, are lacking. This scoping review identified a lack of literature with a focus on measurement of the implementation of a life-course approach. The report provides suggestions from research on a life-course approach in public health interventions and national-level strategies that could aid policy-makers in developing a measurement framework. For example, Member States using a life-course approach in policy at a population level could report on existing interventions in key stages of the life-course using existing survey platforms and routinely collected quantitative data. Ideally, a monitoring and evaluation framework collecting data longitudinally across different life stages over time should be created for Member States.
