Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Morbid Histology and Clinical Pathology This volume is designed to meet the. requirements of students and pathologists working in hospitals and institutes. It is issued in response to enquiries for a laboratory handbook, containing the numerous, recently devised methods as well as those of earlier date, arranged in a form suitable for practical work. Although we dare not hope to have fulfilled these conditions in their entirety, we trust that the book will prove useful to those for whom it has been prepared, and thus meet a demand in English medical literature. It will be clearly understood that a book of this type makes no claim for originality. We have freely consulted well-known text-books, especially those of Gustav Mann, Sims Woodhead, Boyce, Mallory and Wright, Aschoff and Gaylord, Lee and Mayer, Schmorl, von Kahlden, Friedlander-Eberth, and Pollack, and the Encyklopaedie der Mikroskopischen Technik. To Schmorl's book, in particular, we are deeply indebted. We have, however, except in a few cases, obtained the details of the methods from the original papers. Our own work has thus consisted in selecting and grouping the methods, and in the addition of a few practical hints. We have also endeavoured to summarise roughly the chief theoretical considerations relative to each method. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Histology and Pathology Histology, or the minute anatomy of healthy tissue as revealed by the microscope, has made vast strides in the last few years, and now forms a most important part Of Medical education; a thorough knowledge of the normal structure Of the animal tissues being absolutely necessary for the appreciation of pathological Change. This subject is now taught at the Medical schools, and there is no excuse for a student who has finished his curriculum without some knowledge Of practical histology, and Of the minute anatomy Of the human body. There are many, however, who qualified some years ago, when little attention was paid to this subject, who have consequently no practical knowledge Of the methods required to prepare any morbid growth they may meet with in their professional career, or how to set about a microscopical examination Of the same. Every autopsy presents for solution a problem which may be simple or complex. The known quantities are certain clinical symptoms and physical signs; the unknown quan tities are not only the gross and microscopic lesions that may or may not have given rise to the symptoms and signs, but also the etiology of the lesions and the order of their sequence. The solution of the problem often requires the highest skill in post-mortem, bacteriological, and histo logical technique, but in its solution lies the fascination of pathological work. Every autopsy presents for solution a problem which may be simple or complex. The solution of the problem often requires the highest skill in post-mortem, bacteriological, and histological technique, but in its solution lies the fascination of pathological work. It has seemed advisable to us to present, so far as possible, a consecutive statement of the methods employed in solving the various problems that arise, so as to avoid the repetitions that necessarily occur when the three usual divisions of the subject are separately considered by different writers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Pathological Histology, Vol. 1: To Serve as an Introduction to the Study of Morbid Anatomy The following treatise was undertaken from this point of view; attention has accordingly been directed to the pathological histology in the first place, while the coarser data of morbid anatomy are relegated to the second. For the benefit of my colleagues, I may add that this book was written in the laboratory rather than in the study. The number of original investigations which it embodies, must serve to atone for the absence of an exhaustive and uniform treatment of individual topics. Download or read book A Manual of Clinical Laboratory Methods (Classic Reprint) written by Clyde Lottridge Cummer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Clinical Laboratory Methods IN offering this manual for the use of students and practitioners, the object is to present clinical laboratory methods in concise and accessible form. While devoted largely to a description of methods, the underlying principles, the indications for performing tests and the significance of the results are outlined. Accordingly the plan adopted in most chapters has been as follows: (1) Outline of routine examina tions; (2) description of the simpler qualitative methods which are frequently employed; (3) description of quantitative methods or those of intricate technic; (4) discussion of findings in various morbid condi' tions. When several methods are given, usually the preferred one is indicated. Details are entered into more fully in some cases than in others. For example, the method of counting blood cells has been given meticulously, since it is elementary and its procedures are among the first which must be mastered by the student. It may seem that disproportionate attention has been given to certain subjects, such as the histology and pathology of the blood, but experience in teaching has shown this to be desirable. It is hoped that both the liberal use of cross references in the body of the text and the synoptic resumes of quantitative procedures in the chapters on Blood and Urine, will facilitate use of the book in the clinical laboratory. The bibliography, which will be found at the end of the text, contains references to original articles on the newer methods, and will prove helpful to readers desiring to consult the literature. The standard works to which reference is made, have been used freely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
