Book excerpt: The use of porphyrins for localization and photodynamic therapy of neoplastic disease has been the topic of several international symposia, reviews and books during the preceeding five years. The literature on this topic has continued to grow, as have numbers of presentations at national and international meetings relating to photobiology, chemistry, and lasers. In this volume, it is the intention of the editor to provide both information on current research projects, and detailed methodology used in such investigations. A bibliography on the subjects of porphyrin localization and therapy is included. The manuscripts contained in this volume are based on reports given at a Porphyrin Photosensitization Workshop which was held in Philadel phia, July 6-7, 1984. This Workshop was supported by NIH grant CA 36746, together with funds from the Fogarty International Center. Authors were requested to update their contributions to provide a summary of progress to mid 1985. Manuscripts containing material not presented in Philadelphia are also included, notably a series of articles describ ing current clinical and pre-clinical results from China. Since the Philadelphia Workshop, a meeting was held in Alghero, Sardinia (May, 1985), and additional conferences are now being planned; this attests to the continued interest in photodynamic therapy involving porphyrin photo sensitization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, light has been used to cure various diseases. However, it is only recently that a new medical field has arisen. Photodynamic therapy (PDT), also known as photochemotherapy, is a fast growing technique which was initially devoted to cancer care but which is now recognised as a promising treatment technique in a variety of clinical fields. Written by recognised experts, Photodynamic Therapy provides a comprehensive explanation of what PDT is and how it has developed as a technique in areas such as the detection of lung cancer and applications in dermatology, gynaecology and neurosurgery. This book is ideal both as an introduction to PDT and as an informative text for those wishing to expand their knowledge. Practitioners in biological sciences, biotechnology and medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry will find it an invaluable source of information.

This interesting work describes synthesis of new sensitizers, photochemical and photobiological properties of dyes currently used for photodynamic therapy, plus those being examined with a view toward providing therapeutic advantages. It contains results and methodology from leading experts on the use of porphyrins and other photosensitizers for detection of neoplastic disease and for photodynamic therapy of neoplastic disease. The volumes focus on the major clinical and pre-clinical research groups. They also include an appended bibliography which lists all pertinent publications in this field. This easy-to-understand book is written for all workers in the field of photodynamic therapy and provides an introduction to those beginning research on some aspect of tumor photosensitization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paperback. The porphyrins are a class of naturally-occurring macrocycles and are ubiquitous in our world. As such, they have been called the Pigments of Life. This auspicious designation reflects their importance in numerous biological functions. Indeed, life as we understand it relies on the full range of biological processes that are either performed by or catalyzed by porphyrin-containing proteins. Chlorophyll-containing photosynthetic reaction centers in plants, for instance, convert light energy into chemical energy while producing oxygen along the way. It is this oxygen, evolved from photosynthesis, that is transported, stored, and reduced by heme-containing proteins in many organisms, including mammals. Not surprisingly, therefore, these molecules remain of fundamental interest to chemists and biochemists. Indeed, they continue to be intensely investigated by researchers world-wide.Inspired by the importance of the porphyrins, a new research di

Their contributions are based on an international symposium and cover all major fields of clinical oncology. Special emphasis is given to surgical oncology (including photodynamic laser therapy and radiosurgery), radiation oncology, hyperthermia, new antineoplastic agents, enzyme-pattern-targeted chemotherapy, drug resistance, biological response modifiers, bone marrow transplantation, antibody guided therapy, induction of cell differentiation in transformed cells, and the individualization of tumor therapy. The stimulating discussion at the end of each section covering these topics will particulary benefit the clinical oncologist and all researchers devoted to the improvement of cancer therapy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all life depends on light for its survival. It is the ultimate basis for the food we eat (photosynthesis), and many organisms make use of it in basic sensory mechanisms for guiding their behaviour, be it through the complex process of vision, or by the relatively more simple photosens itivity of microorganis~urthermore, light has profound implications for the field of medicine, both as a cause of disease (ie UV damage of DNA), and as a therapeutic agent (ie photodynamic therapy). These and other processes are the basis for the science of photobiolog~ which could be defined as the study of the effects of (visible and ultraviolet) light (from both the sun and artificial sources) on living matter. By its very nature, therefore, it is a multidisciplinary science involving branches of biology, chemistry, physics and medicine. This book contains a selection of papers which have been chosen to highlight recent advances in the various disciplines that make up photo biology. Although no book on photobiology can hope to be comprehensive, we hope that this volume includes a representative sample of much of what is new in the field. It is, however, inevitable that some areas will be better represented than others reflecting the biases of conference org anisers and editors.

This volume is a synthesis of up-to-the-minute reviews on such photochemical and photobiological sensitized reactions with particular relevance to photomedicine. The first part gives a description of experimental techniques for the study of the primary processes after radiation absorption by biological systems. It is followed by chapters on singlet oxygen and photomedicine, considering both phototherapy and photochemotherapy. These sections also discuss the next generation of potential photosensitizing drugs.
