Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having safe drinking water is important to all Americans. The Environmental Protection Agency's decision in the summer of 2001 to delay implementing a new, more stringent standard for the maximum allowable level for arsenic in drinking water generated a great deal of criticism and controversy. Ultimately at issue were newer data on arsenic beyond those that had been examined in a 1999 National Research Council report. EPA asked the National Research Council for an evaluation of the new data available. The committee's analyses and conclusions are presented in Arsenic in Drinking Water: 2001 Update. New epidemiological studies are critically evaluated, as are new experimental data that provide information on how and at what level arsenic in drinking water can lead to cancer. The report's findings are consistent with those of the 1999 report that found high risks of cancer at the previous federal standard of 50 parts per billion. In fact, the new report concludes that men and women who consume water containing 3 parts per billion of arsenic daily have about a 1 in 1,000 increased risk of developing bladder or lung cancer during their lifetime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topics in Environmental Health, Volume 6: Biological and Environmental Effects of Arsenic focuses on the properties, characteristics, and reactions of arsenic and its effects on the environment. The selection first tackles the mobilization of arsenic by natural and industrial processes and emissions, cycling, and effects of arsenic in soil ecosystems. Discussions focus on the effects of arsenic on plants and soil microorganisms, exposure through consumption, sources of arsenic, and mobilization of arsenic by natural processes and industrial activities. The publication then ponders on environmental reaction and analysis methods and arsenical metabolism and toxicity to freshwater and marine species. The text examines the metabolism of arsenic and epidemiology of human arsenic exposure, including acute and chronic effects by arsenic in man, absorption, tissue distribution and retention, and elimination and biological half-time. The publication then takes a look at the toxicity of arsenic and its compounds, as well as biological transformation of arsenic compounds in soil ecosystems and effects on plants; biotransformation of arsenic compounds and toxicity to freshwater and marine biota; and environmental transformation of arsenic in freshwater/marine ecosystems. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the biological and environmental effects of arsenic.

Book excerpt: Heavy metals can be emitted into environment by both natural and anthropogenic sources, mainly mining and industrial activity. Human exposure occurs through all environmental media. Infants are more susceptible to the adverse effects of exposure. Increasing attention is now being paid to the mental development of children exposed to heavy metals. The purpose of this book is to evaluate the existing knowledge on intellectual impairment in children exposed to heavy metals in their living environment and to identify the research needs in order to obtain a clearer picture of the situation in countries and regions at risk, in which the economy is closely related to metallurgy and heavy metals emission, and to recommend a strategy for human protection. In greater detail the main objectives could be formulated as follows: to review the principal sources of single, and complex mixtures of, heavy metal pollutants in the environment; to identify suitable methodology for chemical analyses in the environment and in humans; to evaluate the existing methods for measuring mental impairment, including their reliability and validity; to recommend a standard testing protocol to be used in future research; to assess the future role of environmental heavy metal pollution in countries and regions at risk and its effects on children’s neurological development; to recommend a prevention strategy for protecting children’s health and development.

Book excerpt: Widely employed for separating and detecting chemicals in solution, separation techniques are most often applied in tandem, subsequently referred to as hyphenated methods. Hyphenated and Alternative Methods of Detection in Chromatography details the development and application of mass spectral detection techniques coupled with gas phase and liquid phase chromatographies. With contributions from experts in a variety of fields, as evidenced by the range of topics, the book describes the advantages and disadvantages of various separation techniques and addresses methods for cutting-edge applications such as proteomics research. Specifically, this book covers: The development of the LC-NMR and its application in chromatographic science, particularly in relation to the analysis of natural and environmental samples and in the study of reaction monitoring, biosynthetic analysis, and structural elucidation The application of LC-ICP in biological samples for the speciation of organoarsenic and organoselenium compounds; metal complexes in microorganisms, plants, and foods of plant origin; human body fluids and tissues; and in the detection of chemical warfare agents Electrochemical detection in liquid chromatography, system optimization, and applications in the analysis of flavonoids The use of chemiluminescence for microcolumn and capillary methods of separation The process of employing multidimensional separation methods as a means of identifying components in complex samples A detailed reference for those starting out in the field, this book also suits those who are more experienced yet require assistance in new directions. It is an ideal reference for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students wishing to supplement their learning experience. Containing over 800 references, this book is an excellent source of information within the field of hyphenated methods of chromatographic analysis.
