But the value depends so much upon the method of study and the means of presenting it. It is impossible to secure a correct comparative value of any study, for one teacher will make it of a much more or less value than another. But studies do have an inherent value. Arithmetic develops the mind in a certain way and has a certain purpose. The same is true of geography or history. The teacher ought first ask himself why do we study this subject or that one. Where does it most naturally apply, and how may it be best applied? In teaching a subject, then, I would consider the two parts; first, value; second, methods; or why first and how second. Book excerpt: A resource for all who teach and study history, this book illuminates the unmistakable centrality of American Indian history to the full sweep of American history. The nineteen essays gathered in this collaboratively produced volume, written by leading scholars in the field of Native American history, reflect the newest directions of the field and are organized to follow the chronological arc of the standard American history survey. Contributors reassess major events, themes, groups of historical actors, and approaches--social, cultural, military, and political--consistently demonstrating how Native American people, and questions of Native American sovereignty, have animated all the ways we consider the nation's past. The uniqueness of Indigenous history, as interwoven more fully in the American story, will challenge students to think in new ways about larger themes in U.S. history, such as settlement and colonization, economic and political power, citizenship and movements for equality, and the fundamental question of what it means to be an American. Contributors are Chris Andersen, Juliana Barr, David R. M. Beck, Jacob Betz, Paul T. Conrad, Mikal Brotnov Eckstrom, Margaret D. Jacobs, Adam Jortner, Rosalyn R. LaPier, John J. Laukaitis, K. Tsianina Lomawaima, Robert J. Miller, Mindy J. Morgan, Andrew Needham, Jean M. O'Brien, Jeffrey Ostler, Sarah M. S. Pearsall, James D. Rice, Phillip H. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History The old method of teaching history by as signing a certain number of pages in the text book to be memorized, is, we are glad to be able to say, pretty generally a thing of the past, having been discarded by all progressive educators. The topical method has found favor because it is the method which devel ops the student's individuality, and makes it possible for him to compare the views of differ ent authors, thus doing away with the diffi culty some teachers experience from diversity of text books. It is the best because it teaches the pupil to think and compare as well as to remember facts. When carried to its full de velopment the topical method becomes the outline method, which combines with the ads vantages possessed by the topical method many which it does not possess. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Students Outline for the History of the United States This outline has its origin in the demands of the author's own classes, the growing interest in the better teaching of history, the many requests from teachers for a work that will enable them to carry on the source or library method without a larger expenditure of time in preparation than they are able to give, and in the need of a work to enable academies, high schools, and normal schools to meet the requirements of the conference of American Colleges which recommended as the minimum of American History for college entrance: "At least one year's work by the library method with one or more topics by the source method." It is believed that this outline meets, to a fuller degree than any other work now published, the recommendations of the Committee of Ten which say: "The course that best prepares for college entrance is the course that best prepares for actual life, "That the method of study by topics be strongly recommended as tending to stimulate pupils and to encourage independence of judgment. "That in all practical ways an effort should be made to teach the pupils in the latter years to discriminate between the authorities, especially between original sources and secondary writers. "That no formal instruction in political economy be given in the secondary schools but that, in connection particularly with United States history, instruction be given in economic topics. "That the teaching of history should be intimately connected with the teaching of English; first, by using historical works or extracts for reading; second, by writing English compositions from subjects drawn from the historical lessons." In addition to meeting these requirements, this outline removes some of the strongest objections to the outline method. First, by giving abundant references to both sources and secondary writers, the objection that pupils lose too much time in aimless hunting, is taken away. Second, by calling for connective narratives or biographies, at the close of the various periods of our history, the strongest objection that the topical method leaves the information in a disconnected, unorganized state, in the pupil's mind, is entirely removed and the pupil is left much stronger in ability to analyze and to synthesize than he would have been if he had used a narrative text only, for in the narrative text, another has both analyzed and generalized for him. The objection that it consumes too much time comes from a false conception of what constitutes history, and what is the real aim of history study. The idea that it is a narrative, leads to the idea that so much of it must be committed by each student each term regardless of growth in power to judge of historic events. But if the aim be power to judge wisely, to know, to feel, and to do right, then the teacher will be willing to assign fewer topics if by so doing a deeper insight into each may be gained. But in the end time is saved. Time is always saved by presenting our subjects in accordance with the laws of the human mind. Like a wise gardener, who prepares his soil before he plants his seed, an outline prepares the pupil's mind before it presents facts. When a pupil has read a topic or a question from his outline, and then goes to look it up, he goes for a purpose; and when the information is found it gives pleasure because there was desire, and it is more easily remembered because the mind was prepared to receive it. There is little in this outline that is original. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline and Notes on United States History One end has been kept steadily in view - to furnish the method and the material for a rational stud of United States History - to state the problem and furnish the means of its solution. Two things have been done to secure this end: 1. A discussion of the Central Truth in the subject and the necessary relations under which events can be viewed; 2. A presentation of material, original and selected, and of an outline and references to matter found either in text-books or libraries. To furnish the student the method and material of thought which shall yield the highest discipline and culture, is not an easy task. This question constantly confronts one: How much can the teacher safely do? How far shall a discussion of the Central Idea and its application in working out the problem be carried? Shall the outline present the logical relations of the subject, or shall the student be required to discover them? After the Introduction, the thinking and organization of the subject is done mainly by the student - the work of the teacher being directive. This book was written for use in this school. It is adapted, however, to use in High Schools, and such other schools as place the history of our country on a higher plane than can be reached by the Grammar Grades. It is hoped that it will be helpful to such teachers as are trying to make a real study of History. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of a Course of Study in United States History, With an Introduction on the Nature of the Subject, the Reasons for Teaching It, and the Method of Teaching It A few months ago the writer prepared and published for the use of his classes, a brief Outline of the work in United States History, as presented in the Normal School. This revised edition has been prepared for the double purpose of supplying the classes in the Normal School, and of meeting the wants of those teachers who may find it useful to them in their schools. The author desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to Ex-President, Wm. A. Jones, of the Normal School, for important hints and suggestions which, eight years ago, started him in the pleasant paths of historical investigation on a higher plane than he had before known. He wishes also to express the pleasure he experiences as he recalls the patient industry and the quiet enthusiasm with which his many classes have worked with him in elaborating the matter of which this "Outline" has been the basis; and to them it is affectionately dedicated. In the hope that it may stimulate to further research and to higher results, this edition is sent out to those for whom it is intended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Historical Method We shall have better history teaching when we have better trained teachers; and we shall have the trained teachers when the teachers themselves, and those who employ them, realize that history can be taught only by those who have been prepared for the work. As the matter stands to-day, it is the popular belief that any intelligent person may teach a class in history without special training, or, with no other knowledge than general information, may participate in a discussion upon methods of teaching history and what the object of historical study is. It is not an uncommon thing for a college graduate, who has devoted all his time to Greek and Latin, or to science, to have a class in history assigned to him. He may not be particularly pleased with the assignment, but it does not strike him as at all incongruous. While, on the other hand, no good high school principal would assign a class in Greek to a man who had not been trained for that work. What is the reason for this distinction? It is not far to seek. As history has been taught, and is still taught, in the high school, no special training is necessary. Any bright man can read over the lesson and hear the class recite it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline Guide to American History by the Source and Library Method The problems before us today are the legacy of those who have preceded us, - the results of their successes or failures. This makes history a living science, no longer to be regarded as a mere culture study, dependent upon the 'memory alone. Today the genuine study of history demands the exercise of all the mental faculties in determining motives, com paring situations and drawing conclusions. This can not be done by reading one meager text book. Dif ferent authors must be read to get different points of view. Better still is the present tendency to send the pupil directly to the original source, whether it be a newspaper clipping, a speech, a diary account, a letter or a government record. How much more meaning the Compromise of 1850 has when one reads the speeches and debates of that time! The original sources are constantly being made more available to the student. Every teacher should own, and may the time soon come when every pupil may own, the sheldon-barnes American history, or some similar collection. The following Outline Guide is putin print for the Convenience of the Iowa State Normal students, but may possibly be useful to others. It is not intended that any one student shall use all the references given, but different students using different books will bring a variety of opinions to the class, whichmust be discussed and accounted for. Six or eight good texts have been cited throughout, and such other books as have been found most helpful. A list of the books referred to with the publishers' names is given for the use of any who may be selecting libraries for school or private use.
