This book was released on 1997 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DANS CETTE THESE, NOUS NOUS INTERESSONS AU CALCUL DES BRANCHES SOLUTIONS DES EQUATIONS STATIONNAIRES DE NAVIER-STOKES PAR UNE METHODE ASYMPTOTIQUE NUMERIQUE (MAN). SUR LES BRANCHES DE SOLUTIONS AINSI OBTENUES, NOUS PROPOSONS DES INDICATEURS DE BIFURCATION STATIONNAIRE ET DE HOPF QUI NOUS PERMETTENT DE DETERMINER LES POINTS SINGULIERS DE L'ECOULEMENT FLUIDE. LA MAN EST L'ASSOCIATION D'UNE METHODE DE PERTURBATION ET DE LA METHODE DES ELEMENTS FINIS. LA METHODE DE PERTURBATION PERMET DE TRANSFORMER LE PROBLEME NON LINEAIRE INITIAL EN UNE SUCCESSION DE PROBLEMES LINEAIRES QUI ADMETTENT LE MEME OPERATEUR TANGENT. LES SYSTEMES LINEAIRES SONT ENSUITE RESOLUS DE FACON RECURSIVE PAR LA METHODE DES ELEMENTS FINIS, UNE SEULE DECOMPOSITION DE MATRICE EST ALORS NECESSAIRE PUOR DETERMINER ANALYTIQUEMENT UNE PARTIE DE LA COURBE SOLUTION. LE PREMIER CHAPITRE DE CETTE THESE EST CONSACREE A DES RAPPELS SUR LA MAN ET SUR LA METHODE DE CONTINUATION POUR LE CALCUL DES BRANCHES SOLUTIONS DES EQUATIONS STATIONNAIRES DE NAVIER-STOKES. LE DEUXIEME CHAPITRE PORTE SUR L'APPLICATION DE LA MAN A LA FORMULATION PETROV-GALERKIN POUR LES EQUATIONS DE NAVIER-STOKES. LA DIFFICULTE DE CE PROBLEME EST DE SE RAMENER A UN FORMALISME QUADRATIQUE. LORSQUE CELA EST REALISE LES NOTIONS DEVELOPPEES AU PREMIER CHAPITRE SONT ALORS APPLIQUEES. LES TROISIEME ET QUATRIEME CHAPITRES SONT CONSACRES A LA DETERMINATION DES POINTS SINGULIERS SUR LES BRANCHES SOLUTIONS. DEUX TYPES D'INSTABILITES SONT ETUDIES, LES BIFURCATIONS STATIONNAIRES ET DE HOPF. LA DETERMINATION DE CES POINTS S'EFFECTUE GRACE A DES INDICATEURS DE BIFURCATION. DES EXEMPLES D'ECOULEMENT DE FLUIDE PERMETTENT DE DEMONTRER L'EFFICACITE ET LA FIABILITE DE CES INDICATEURS. DANS LE DERNIER CHAPITRE NOUS APPLIQUONS LES OUTILS NUMERIQUES DEVELOPPES AUX CHAPITRES PRECEDENTS POUR TRAITER UN PROBLEME D'INTERACTION FLUIDE-STRUCTURE : UN TUBE CYLINDRIQUE SOUMIS A UN ECOULEMENT TRANSVERSE. LES EQUATIONS DU MOUVEMENT DU TUBE ET DU FLUIDE SONT DECRITES A L'AIDE DU FORMALISME ARBITRAIRE LAGRANGE-EULER.

Book excerpt: LE COUPLAGE ENTRE UNE STRUCTURE VIBRANTE ET UN FLUIDE SOUS ECOULEMENT, APPELE COUPLAGE FLUIDE-ELASTIQUE, CONDUIT SELON LES CAS A DES SITUATIONS STABLES OU INSTABLES. LES INSTABILITES FLUIDE-ELASTIQUES SONT TRES NUISIBLES POUR LES STRUCTURES CAR LES AMPLITUDES VIBRATOIRES CROISSENT EXPONENTIELLEMENT JUSQU'A LEUR RUPTURE. PLUSIEURS DOMAINES, PARMI LESQUELS L'AERONAUTIQUE, LE NUCLEAIRE ET PLUS RECEMMENT LA BIOMECANIQUE, ONT ETE CONFRONTES A DES SITUATIONS DE COUPLAGE INSTABLE. AFIN D'ETUDIER LE COUPLAGE FLUIDE-ELASTIQUE ET D'EVITER LES INSTABILITES, DES METHODES NUMERIQUES ONT ETE RECEMMENT DEVELOPPEES RELATIVEMENT A DES PROBLEMES INDUSTRIELS SPECIFIQUES, POUR EPAULER LES NOMBREUSES DONNEES EXPERIMENTALES QUI ONT ETE DEJA REUNIES. NOUS PROPOSONS ICI UNE METHODE SIMPLE POUR LE CALCUL NUMERIQUE DE FORCES FLUIDE-ELASTIQUES RELATIVEMENT A DES FLUIDES NEWTONIENS INCOMPRESSIBLES ET POUR DE FAIBLES AMPLITUDES VIBRATOIRES, ADAPTEE A PLUSIEURS SITUATIONS RENCONTREES DANS LE DOMAINE NUCLEAIRE. BASEE SUR UN DEVELOPPEMENT AU PREMIER ORDRE DES CONDITIONS AUX LIMITES EN VITESSES, CETTE METHODE PERMET D'UTILISER UN DOMAINE FLUIDE FIXE TOUT AU LONG D'UN CALCUL DYNAMIQUE, EVITANT AINSI LES DIFFICULTES LIEES AUX DEFORMATIONS DU MAILLAGE. LA METHODE A ETE MISE EN UVRE POUR DEUX TYPES DE CALCULS : MOUVEMENT DE PAROIS IMPOSE PERMETTANT DE DETERMINER LES COEFFICIENTS DE MASSE, AMORTISSEMENT ET RIGIDITE AJOUTES, ET MOUVEMENTS DE PAROIS LIBRES A PARTIR D'UNE PERTURBATION INITIALE AFIN DE METTRE EN EVIDENCE LES SITUATIONS INSTABLES. LA VALIDITE DE LA METHODE A ETE MONTREE A L'AIDE DE QUATRE CAS-TESTS D'ECOULEMENTS LAMINAIRES : CYLINDRE VIBRANT EN MILIEU VISQUEUX, DEFORMATION STATIQUE D'UN CANAL, ECOULEMENT A L'INTERIEUR D'UN TUBE ENCASTRE-LIBRE ET FAISCEAU DE TUBES SOUS ECOULEMENT TRANSVERSE. ENFIN, NOUS AVONS MONTRE QUE LA METHODE N'EST PAS ADAPTEE AUX ECOULEMENTS FORTEMENT PERIODIQUES ET NOUS PROPOSONS UNE LOI DE PAROIS POUR LA MODELISATION D'ECOULEMENTS TURBULENTS.

Book excerpt: Presenting a unified approach, this book focusses on the concepts and theoretical methods that are necessary for an understanding of the physics and chemistry of the fluid state. The authors do not attempt to cover the whole field in an encyclopedic manner. Instead, important ideas are presented in a concise and rigorous style, and illustrated with examples from both simple molecular liquids and more complex soft condensed matter systems such as polymers, colloids, and liquid crystals.

Book excerpt: Genmix: A General Computer Program for Two-dimensional Parabolic Phenomena explains a computer program called GENMIX. The main intention of the program is to be used as a tool of instructions. The name of the program is a mixture of two considerations: its generality and its concern for mixing processes. The book aims to help the potential user to understand the physical and mathematical basis of the topic computer program. It is also the aim of the book to make the program applicable to practical problems. The book is arranged in such a way as to parallel a course of lectures and associated computer-workshop sessions wherein the student is allowed to do some elementary computations as soon as he has gained some knowledge of the method. The book contains the mathematical, physical, and computer-coding aspects of the program. Concepts such as the boundary layer, two-dimensional, and steady- flow are defined and discussed in depth. The text will be a useful tool for computer instructors and students.

Book excerpt: 'The book is an engaging and influential collection of significant contributions from an assembly of world expert leaders and pioneers from different fields, working at the interface between topology and physics or applications of topology to physical systems … The book explores many interesting and novel topics that lie at the intersection between gravity, quantum fields, condensed matter, physical cosmology and topology … A rich, well-organized, and comprehensive overview of remarkable and insightful connections between physics and topology is here made available to the physics reader.'Contemporary PhysicsSince its birth in Poincaré's seminal 1894 'Analysis Situs', topology has become a cornerstone of mathematics. As with all beautiful mathematical concepts, topology inevitably — resonating with that Wignerian principle of the effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences — finds its prominent role in physics. From Chern-Simons theory to topological quantum field theory, from knot invariants to Calabi-Yau compactification in string theory, from spacetime topology in cosmology to the recent Nobel Prize winning work on topological insulators, the interactions between topology and physics have been a triumph over the past few decades. In this eponymous volume, we are honoured to have contributions from an assembly of grand masters of the field, guiding us with their world-renowned expertise on the subject of the interplay between 'Topology' and 'Physics'. Beginning with a preface by Chen Ning Yang on his recollections of the early days, we proceed to a novel view of nuclei from the perspective of complex geometry by Sir Michael Atiyah and Nick Manton, followed by an entrée toward recent developments in two-dimensional gravity and intersection theory on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces by Robbert Dijkgraaf and Edward Witten; a study of Majorana fermions and relations to the Braid group by Louis H Kauffman; a pioneering investigation on arithmetic gauge theory by Minhyong Kim; an anecdote-enriched review of singularity theorems in black-hole physics by Sir Roger Penrose; an adventure beyond anyons by Zhenghan Wang; an aperçu on topological insulators from first-principle calculations by Haijun Zhang and Shou-Cheng Zhang; finishing with synopsis on quantum information theory as one of the four revolutions in physics and the second quantum revolution by Xiao-Gang Wen. We hope that this book will serve to inspire the research community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to differential manifolds. It gives solid preliminaries for more advanced topics: Riemannian manifolds, differential topology, Lie theory. It presupposes little background: the reader is only expected to master basic differential calculus, and a little point-set topology. The book covers the main topics of differential geometry: manifolds, tangent space, vector fields, differential forms, Lie groups, and a few more sophisticated topics such as de Rham cohomology, degree theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces. Its ambition is to give solid foundations. In particular, the introduction of “abstract” notions such as manifolds or differential forms is motivated via questions and examples from mathematics or theoretical physics. More than 150 exercises, some of them easy and classical, some others more sophisticated, will help the beginner as well as the more expert reader. Solutions are provided for most of them. The book should be of interest to various readers: undergraduate and graduate students for a first contact to differential manifolds, mathematicians from other fields and physicists who wish to acquire some feeling about this beautiful theory. The original French text Introduction aux variétés différentielles has been a best-seller in its category in France for many years. Jacques Lafontaine was successively assistant Professor at Paris Diderot University and Professor at the University of Montpellier, where he is presently emeritus. His main research interests are Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, including some aspects of mathematical relativity. Besides his personal research articles, he was involved in several textbooks and research monographs.

On the other hand, since much of the material in this volume seems suitable for inclusion in elementary courses, it may not be superfluous to point out that it is almost entirely self-contained. Even the basic facts about trigonometric functions are treated ab initio in Ch. II, according to Eisenstein's method. It would have been both logical and convenient to treat the gamma -function similarly in Ch. VII; for the sake of brevity, this has not been done, and a knowledge of some elementary properties of T(s) has been assumed. One further prerequisite in Part II is Dirichlet's theorem on Fourier series, together with the method of Poisson summation which is only a special case of that theorem; in the case under consideration (essentially no more than the transformation formula for the theta-function) this presupposes the calculation of some classical integrals. (...) As to the final chapter, it concerns applications to number theory (...).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful reflection on the mathematical soul What do pure mathematicians do, and why do they do it? Looking beyond the conventional answers—for the sake of truth, beauty, and practical applications—this book offers an eclectic panorama of the lives and values and hopes and fears of mathematicians in the twenty-first century, assembling material from a startlingly diverse assortment of scholarly, journalistic, and pop culture sources. Drawing on his personal experiences and obsessions as well as the thoughts and opinions of mathematicians from Archimedes and Omar Khayyám to such contemporary giants as Alexander Grothendieck and Robert Langlands, Michael Harris reveals the charisma and romance of mathematics as well as its darker side. In this portrait of mathematics as a community united around a set of common intellectual, ethical, and existential challenges, he touches on a wide variety of questions, such as: Are mathematicians to blame for the 2008 financial crisis? How can we talk about the ideas we were born too soon to understand? And how should you react if you are asked to explain number theory at a dinner party? Disarmingly candid, relentlessly intelligent, and richly entertaining, Mathematics without Apologies takes readers on an unapologetic guided tour of the mathematical life, from the philosophy and sociology of mathematics to its reflections in film and popular music, with detours through the mathematical and mystical traditions of Russia, India, medieval Islam, the Bronx, and beyond.

This book was released on 1992-03-31 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides a definitive overview of recent advances in the stability and oscillation of autonomous delay differential equations. Topics include linear and nonlinear delay and integrodifferential equations, which have potential applications to both biological and physical dynamic processes. Chapter 1 deals with an analysis of the dynamical characteristics of the delay logistic equation, and a number of techniques and results relating to stability, oscillation and comparison of scalar delay and integrodifferential equations are presented. Chapter 2 provides a tutorial-style introduction to the study of delay-induced Hopf bifurcation to periodicity and the related computations for the analysis of the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions. Chapter 3 is devoted to local analyses of nonlinear model systems and discusses many methods applicable to linear equations and their perturbations. Chapter 4 considers global convergence to equilibrium states of nonlinear systems, and includes oscillations of nonlinear systems about their equilibria. Qualitative analyses of both competitive and cooperative systems with time delays feature in both Chapters 3 and 4. Finally, Chapter 5 deals with recent developments in models of neutral differential equations and their applications to population dynamics. Each chapter concludes with a number of exercises and the overall exposition recommends this volume as a good supplementary text for graduate courses. For mathematicians whose work involves functional differential equations, and whose interest extends beyond the boundaries of linear stability analysis.
