Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When "Method in Ethical Theory "was initially published in 1963, it called for greater awareness of how an agenda for moral philosophy is established and the conditons under which it changes. Edel strives for effective comparison of ethical theories, denying that any one theory has exclusive claim to the truth about ethics. He maintains that different theories are appropriate for particular conditions. In "Method in Ethical Theory, "he works out an approach for ethical theory that is both critical and comprehensive. Edel presents four approaches to his study: the "analytical "deals with terms and concepts; the "descriptive "seeks to accurately depict, classify, and interpret moral qualities and situations; the "causal-explanatory "raises questions about functional relations; and the "evaluative "critically observes and applies standards. Alongside of these perspectives, Edel sets up a comparative approach, one that grounds the study of ethics hi empirical and historical research. In his new introduction, Edel describes the historical context in which his book was written, and explains his reasons for writing it thirty years ago. "Method in Ethical Theory "continues to be a fundamental contribution to ethical studies. It will be of interest to philosophers, sociologists, and specialists in the study of ethics.

Book excerpt: Roger Crisp presents a comprehensive study of Henry Sidgwick's The Methods of Ethics, a landmark work first published in 1874. Crisp argues that Sidgwick is largely right about many central issues in moral philosophy: the metaphysics and epistemology of ethics, consequentialism, hedonism about well-being, and the weight to be given to self-interest. He holds that Sidgwick's long discussion of 'common-sense' morality is probably the best discussion of deontology we have. And yet The Methods of Ethics can be hard to understand, and this is perhaps one reason why, though it is a philosophical goldmine, few have ventured deeply into it. What does Sidgwick mean by a 'method'? Why does he discuss only three methods? What are his arguments for hedonism and for utilitarianism? How can we make sense of the idea of moral intuition? What is the role of virtue in Sidgwick's ethics? Crisp addresses these and many other questions, offering a fresh view of Sidgwick's text which will assist any moral philosopher to gain more from it.

Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book examines the concept of care and care practices in healthcare from the interdisciplinary perspectives of continental philosophy, care ethics, the social sciences, and anthropology. Areas addressed include dementia care, midwifery, diabetes care, psychiatry, and reproductive medicine. Special attention is paid to ambivalences and tensions within both the concept of care and care practices. Contributions in the first section of the book explore phenomenological and hermeneutic approaches to care and reveal historical precursors to care ethics. Empirical case studies and reflections on care in institutionalised and standardised settings form the second section of the book. The concluding chapter, jointly written by many of the contributors, points at recurring challenges of understanding and practicing care that open up the field for further research and discussion. This collection will be of great value to scholars and practitioners of medicine, ethics, philosophy, social science and history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about showing different ways of doing ethics, highlighting a kind of methodological pluralism. This book attempts to relate the difference in methodology and perspective to difference in identity, focal point of analysis, or projects of persuasion. Difference matters ultimately because pluralism matters. This book is a tutorial in ethical analysis and reasoning. Seminarians and graduate students will be brought into the finer points of ethical analysis, of mastering the ins and outs of ethical methodology, by immersing themselves in critical social-ethical analyses of prominent scholars in the American academy. Students will be guided toward how to develop their own voice in social issues, hone their capability in social analysis, and critically engage the social sciences, history, philosophy, and literature as they embark on ethical analyses. There is no single way of teaching the methodology of social ethics and no single theory of ethics that satisfies all; therefore ethics and its methodology are better understood by enabling students to view the field through multiple "windows." Simultaneously they will learn to view social reality from different perspectives. The seven chapters of this book explore the different ways American ethicists have interrogated their nation's moral systems or crafted methods for understanding them.
