Book excerpt: Excerpt from Method and Methods in the Teaching of English To afiect the various motives that may prompt an author to add one more to the many books on methods of teaching that are now available, there seem to be two very good reasons why a new text on the teaching of English may be deemed unnecessary. In the first place, there are a number of excellent discussions of the general phases of the subject and of special branches, which are sound in principle and scholarly in analysis of the material. Secondly, in these days when so much is said in favor of allowing the initiative of the teacher to find full expression, any book which prescribes definite methods of teaching may be said to set itself against the trend of modern theory. Despite these considerations, however, I have long felt that there is a definite need for the kind of treatment of' the subjects connected with the teaching of English in the elementary schools that I have given in this book. There is a real need of specific suggestions as to a rational mode of approaching and' developing the work in English. Teachers are everywhere asking for direc tions which will give them not so much a model for direct imita tion as a basis for intelligent self-criticism. This book aims to present a consistent method of work in all the branches of elemenary English. While drawing freely from the various accepted texts, and adopting without hesitation many valuable suggestions from teachers and writers in all grades of the work, it claims consideration for this original feature: It aims to separate the teaching of technique from the teaching for appreciation and self-expression, and it seeks to found its methods upon a definite psychology of the learning process. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods of Teaching: Language, Reading, Spelling The methods of teaching Language, Reading and Spell ing as presented in this volume are the result of many years of experience of the author both as a class teacher and as a supervisor. They have in the main been subjected to the crucial test of the schoolroom by the teachers of the ele mentary school connected with the Milwaukee State Normal School. The author desires to acknowledge his obligations to the principal and the teachers of this school and to the teacher of Language Arts in the Normal School, for valu able suggestions which have been embodied in the book. In the presentation of the methods no attempt at elaborateness is made. Simplicity, directness and naturalness have been the keynotes the author has had in mind. It was thought best to reduce the theoretical discussion of method to as brief a compass as possible, in order to secure the necessary space for illustrative exercises by means of which principles of teaching and special methods of procedure could be exemplified in a practical way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in the Preparatory Schools This lack of proper training in the use of English is due largely to two causes; first, the want of some efficient method in the teaching of English and, second, the reluctance shown by our best teachers to engaging in this branch of work. Possi bly the second reason may be the result of the first; possibly it is the result of some inherent prejudice, or some unconfessed doubts as to the dignity of this kind of work. As to these last reasons, it must be acknowledged that, under the existing methods, the work is far from agreeable or inspiring to either teacher or taught, and no teacher can justly be blamed for pre ferring to avoid it whenever possible. The question may well be asked, however, whether this very reluctance is not one main cause why this important branch of work has been so long neglected, and whether, if our best-equipped and most earnest teachers were to apply themselves to a solution of the problem, it would not soon be solved as easily as were numerous other knotty problems in educational methods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Method for Literature and History: In the Common Schools This first of the series of Special Methods is a selection and discussion of those literary and historical materials which are adapted to an oral treatment throughout the grades. In the history work of the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, books and references may be much used by the children. The use of the best English classics as regular read ing books in all the grades will be discussed in the second number of the Special Methods (now in press). Another series of books is in preparation in which the actual materials (fairy Tales, Robinson Crusoe, etc.) to be handled in history and literature, as here discussed, will be presented in the simple form required in the schools. Our plan, therefore, is to advance from the most general statement of principles to the most specific application to particular studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Teaching in Country Schools All men, even the most vicious, will admit that he who is immoral should not be placed in the position of teacher of youth. Popular opinion says teachers should have a good moral character, and all certificates require it, but how often, alas, is there a failure in carrying out this provision in practice. A man may be a very immoral man and yet find no trouble in getting some one or more persons to certify to his moral character. The law can not reach this matter except in cases of out-breaking immorality. It rests, then, with the teacher himself and with his conscience. Ask yourself, young man, if you are a fit person to enter that sacred temple. Pause and purify yourself on the threshhold. Remember that you carry about you a moral or immoral atmosphere according to the condition of the soul within, and that the innocent youth must imbibe that atmosphere be it healthful or poisonous. It is impossible for any one to be a successful hypocrite. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Method: A Discussion of the Essential Form of Right Methods in Teaching Analogies play an important role in all explanations of mental phenomena. This is true because nearly all our terms for mental processes and products are borrowed from sense. Among the many analogical theories of mind, and hence of education, two are particularly prominent: (1) That which regards the soul as a germ, containing by involution that which it is to become by evolution, - a self-active power which seizes upon its surroundings, appropriating what is useful for the development of its predetermined form and content; and (2) that theory which regards the mind at any given stage of its development as the resultant of the manifold forces of its environment, as a product more externally than internally produced. The first of these views may be called the germ theory of education; the second, the architectural theory. According to the first notion, the mind is a self-producer of a predetermined product. According to the second, it is the result produced by the educational architect. The first conception makes the teacher merely a gardener; the second makes him an architect of mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Graded Instruction in English: For the Use of Teachers The following course of instruction in English was prepared solely for use in the school of which the author is principal. The solicitation of fellow-workers in Chicago who have watched its success is the reason for publishing it in its present form. The plan has already many friends, and the number is rapidly increasing as teachers see its practical working in the school-room. There is no denying the fact that, when judged by results, the usually adopted methods of teaching the correct use of the English language are a sad failure. This arises partly from faulty methods and partly from the lack of direct and systematic instruction during the first years of school life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Method in Arithmetic IT is our purpose in this volume to make plain to teachers in elementary schools the purpose of teach ing arithmetic, to outline fully a course of study based upon this controlling idea, and to discuss and illustrate the method of handling some of the chief topics. It is strictly a teacher's book, and not designed for use by children. It has been generally felt that arithmetic stands aloof from other studies, but the attempt is made here to show a very intimate and important relation to the other studies, one vital in fact to the proper plan and treatment of the whole subject. This volume is one in a series of special methods, as follows: Reading of English Classics, Primary Reading and Story Work, Geography, History, Ele mentary Science, Language, and Manual Arts. The course of study for the eight grades based on the plans worked out in these eight volumes is now in press and will appear in two volumes. My question was When in doubt in regard to the spelling of a word, how do you assure yourself? The answer, in substance, was, I write the word, and when it looks right, I assume it is correct. Upon further questioning, they were unanimous in the statement that they had adopted this method as a necessity after they had left school and entered upon the active duties of life. Only three or four, out of some hundreds questioned, thought Of the word as they had learned it from the spelling book, and these were teachers.
