Book excerpt: Apparatus performs a method of generating one or more output laser pulses in a range of 2 to 6 microns. When a plurality of the output laser pulses are generated, a first output pulse has any selected wavelength within the range and a second output pulse is temporally closely spaced relative to the first output pulse and has a chosen wavelength differing from the selected wavelength. An oscillator laser cavity is provided with a tunable oscillator rod capable of generating initial laser pulses within a range of from 750 to 1000 nm, and a tuning element is coupled to the rod. A flashlamp is operable to pump the rod. For two pulse operation, the flashlamp has a given duration. A Q-switch provides the initial laser pulses upon operation of the tuning element and the flashlamp. A Raman device coupled to the rod shifts the wavelength of such initial laser pulse into the range of from 2 to 6 microns to form the output laser pulse having a wavelength within the range. For multiple pulses, a controller causes the Q-switch to provide first and second ones of the initial laser pulses, spaced by a time interval less than the given duration. Also, a selector coupled to the tuning element is operable within such duration to successively select the wavelength of the first output pulse and the chosen wavelength of the second initial pulse. The Raman device is responsive to each of the initial light pulses to generate radiation at first and second Stokes wavelengths, each of said the output laser pulses being radiation at the second Stokes wavelength.

An ultraviolet or X-ray laser pulse of long duration (12) is progressively refracted, across the surface of an opaque barrier (28), by a streaming plasma (22) that is produced by illuminating a solid target (16, 18) with a pulse of conventional line focused high power laser radiation (20). The short pulse of ultraviolet or X-ray laser radiation (32), which may be amplified to high power (40, 42), is separated out by passage through a slit aperture (30) in the opaque barrier (28).

Book excerpt: This invention relates to high power gas lasers that are adapted to be tuned to a desired lasing wavelength through the use of a gas cell to lower the gain at a natural lasing wavelength and "seeding" the laser with a beam from a low power laser which is lasing at the desired wavelength. This tuning is accomplished with no loss of power and produces a pulse with an altered pulse shape. It is potentially applicable to all gas lasers.

Book excerpt: Method and apparatus for producing laser radiation by two-photon optical pumping of an atomic or molecular gaseous medium and subsequent lasing action. A population inversion is created as a result of two-photon absorption of the gaseous species. Stark tuning is utilized, if necessary, in order to tune the two-photon transition into exact resonance. In particular, gaseous ammonia (NH.sub. 3) or methyl fluoride (CH.sub. 3 F) is optically pumped by a pair of CO.sub. 2 lasers to create a population inversion resulting from simultaneous two-photon excitation of a high-lying vibrational state, and laser radiation is produced by stimulated emission of coherent radiation from the inverted level.

Book excerpt: Three devices, a short-pulse laser, a coaxial Pockel cell shutter, and a single-crystal transmission-line Pockel cell, have been evaluated as techniques for producing laser pulses approximately 1 nsec in duration. The short-pulse laser has produced pulses that range from 0.5 nsec to 2.0 nsec in duration with peak powers from 25 to 300 kW. Pulses 1.8 nsec in duration FWHM (full width at half maximum) with risetime of less than 0.4 nsec have been gated from Q-switched ruby laser pulses by the coaxial shutter, while pulses 1.3 nsec FWHM have been obtained in the same fashion with a transmission-line shutter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical pulses are flashes of light, which are often generated with lasers (laser pulses) and delivered in the form of laser beams. Due to the enormously high optical frequencies, optical pulses can be extremely short (ultrashort) when their optical bandwidth spans a significant fraction of the mean frequency. Pulsed operation of lasers refers to any laser not classified as continuous wave, so that the optical power appears in pulses of some duration at some repetition rate. This encompasses a wide range of technologies addressing a number of different motivations. Some lasers are pulsed simply because they cannot be run in continuous mode. In other cases the application requires the production of pulses having as large an energy as possible. Since the pulse energy is equal to the average power divided by the repetition rate, this goal can sometimes be satisfied by lowering the rate of pulses so that more energy can be built up in between pulses. In laser ablation for example, a small volume of material at the surface of a work piece can be evaporated if it is heated in a very short time, whereas supplying the energy gradually would allow for the heat to be absorbed into the bulk of the piece, never attaining a sufficiently high temperature at a particular point. Other applications rely on the peak pulse power (rather than the energy in the pulse), especially in order to obtain nonlinear optical effects. For a given pulse energy, this requires creating pulses of the shortest possible duration utilising techniques such as Q-switching. This book discusses aspects of laser pulses generation, characterisation, and practical applications. Some new achievements in theory, experiments, and design are demonstrated. This book will be useful for engineers and managers, for professors and students, and for those who are interested in laser science and technologies.

Book excerpt: A method and apparatus using sinusoidal cross-phase modulation, provides a laser pulse having a very broad bandwidth while substantially retaining the input laser's temporal shape. The modulator may be used in a master oscillator system for a laser having a master oscillator-power amplifier (MOPA) configration. The modulator utilizes a first laser providing an output wavelength .lambda. and a second laser providing an output wavelength shifted by a small amount to .lambda.+. DELTA.lambda. Each beam has a single, linear polarization. Each beam is coupled into a length of polarization-preserving optical fiber. The first laser beam is coupled into the optical fiber with the beam's polarization aligned with the fiber's main axis, and the second beam is coupled into the fiber with its polarization rotated from the main axis by a predetermined angle. Within the fiber, the main axis' polarization defines an interference beam and the orthogonal axis' polarization defines a signal beam. In the interference beam, the first laser beam and the parallel polarized vector component of the other beam interfere to create areas of high and low intensity, which modulates the signal beam by cross phase modulation. Upon exit from the optical fiber, the beams are coupled out and the modulated signal beam is separated out by a polarization selector. The signal beam can be applied to coherence reducing systems to provide an output that is temporally and spatially incoherent. The U.S. Government has rights in this invention pursuant to Contract No. W7405-ENG-48 between the U.S. Department of Energy and the University of California for the operation of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Book excerpt: The simultaneous Q-switching and mode-locking of a 1-meter-long glass laser rod has produced a pulse having an energy content of 44 joules with a peak power of 4 gigawatts and time duration of approximately 1.5 x 10 to the -9th power sec. A 47-joule pulse has been obtained using a 45-cm-long glass rod as a simultaneous Q-switched and mode-locked oscillator and a 1-meter-long glass rod as an optical amplifier. The time duration of individual mode-locked pulses for this case was 0.75 x 10 to the 9th power sec. Use of a 16.5-cm-long oscillator and 1-meter-long amplifier resulted in generation of pulses with a peak power between 3.7 x 10 to the 10th power and 9.4 x 10 to the 10th power watts and time durations of 2 x 10 to the -11th power to 8 x 10 to the -12 power sec, respectively. These measurements are believed to represent the highest peak power pulses reported in literature to date. Experimental techniques for generating single, subnanosecond pulses having peak powers in the hundreds of megawatts range have been devised and made operative. A 600-megawatt peak power pulse of 0.4 x 10 to the -9th power sec time duration was obtained with a 45-cm-long oscillator. Using such an oscillator plus a 1-meter rod as an amplifier a single 0.5 x 10 to the -9th power sec pulse has been generated with an energy content of 1.8 joules. A Marx-Bank pulse generator was designed, constructed, and utilized in generation of these single, ultrashort optical pulses. These measurements represent the shortest single, optical pulses reported in the literature to date.
