Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport of coalbed methane (CBM) through coal is through the cleat network, surrounding matrix blocks. The cleat aperture determines the ease of flow of gas and, hence, the permeability of coal, considered to be one of the most critical factors impacting the overall CBM production. This study was primarily aimed at establishing the permeability trend for Illinois coals. Methane permeability experiments were conducted using coals from two major seams in the Illinois Basin, Herrin and Seelyville. One permeability experiment with coal from the well established CBM producing San Juan Basin was also carried out because history matching of laboratory trend with field trend is possible in this case. Finally, CO 2 permeability for coal from Illinois Basin was conducted to gather valuable scientific data and conduct preliminary prediction of permeability trend for deep Illinois coal. The permeability trend for the coals tested indicated an increase in permeability below a certain gas pressure for both coals. For coal from the Illinois Basin, a consistent increase in permeability was observed below 450 psi. For coal from the San Juan Basin, an initial decrease in permeability, followed by a subsequent increase below 370 psi, was observed. CO 2 permeability for Illinois coal followed a trend similar to methane permeability for San Juan, with an initial decrease, followed by an increase in permeability. The findings of this study, therefore, predict a definite increase in permeability with reservoir depletion for the Illinois Basin. The measured results were analyzed statistically to verify the difference in methane and CO 2 permeability of coal at varying gas pressures. Empirical models were developed to describe methane and CO 2 permeability as a function of mean gas pressure. As a final step, numerical simulation using the COMET3 simulator was carried out to study the impact of variation in methane permeability on long-term CBM production. The impact of the increase in permeability on production rate, cumulative production and overall recovery were quantified. The results showed a significant increase in the production rate and cumulative production due to increased permeability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the concept of displacement of sorbed methane and enhancement of methane recovery by injection of CO2 into coal, while sequestering CO2 . The objective of this study was to investigate the diffusion behavior of San Juan Basin coal under single and competitive gas environments. The movement of gas in a coalbed reservoir starts in the coal matrix with diffusion towards the naturally occurring cleat network surrounding the matrix blocks. The gas production potential from coalbed reservoirs under different gas environments was, therefore, estimated by studying the diffusion behavior of the coal type. The results clearly showed that the rate of diffusion increases with decreasing reservoir pressure, the increase being exponential at low/very low pressure. As a final step, a simulation study was carried out using the experimental results to predict long-term gas production from coalbed reservoirs with and without CO2 injection. This was followed by a preliminary economic analysis in order to estimate the feasibility of enhanced recovery method by CO2 injection by calculating the net present value of a project with and without carbon credits. The results showed that it is possible to obtain significant improvement in methane recovery by CO2 injection. However, it becomes economically feasible only with carbon credits.

Book excerpt: Coal and Coalbed Gas: Future Directions and Opportunities, Second Edition introduces the latest in coal geology research and the engineering of gas extraction. Importantly, the second edition examines how, over the last 10 years, research has both changed focus and where it is conducted. This shift essentially depicts "a tale of two worlds"—one half (Western Europe, North America) moving away from coal and coalbed gas research and production towards cleaner energy resources, and the other half (Asia–Pacific region, Eastern Europe, South America) increasing both research and usage of coal. These changes are marked by a precipitous fall in coalbed gas production in North America; however, at the same time there has been a significant rise in coal and coalbed gas production in Australia, China, and India. The driver for higher production and its associated research is a quest for affordable energy and economic security that a large resource base brings to any country like Australia’s first large-scale coalbed gas to liquid natural gas projects supplying the demand for cleaner burning LNG to the Asian-Pacific region. Since the last edition of this book, global climate change policies have more forcibly emphasized the impact of methane from coal mines and placed these emissions equal to, or even more harmful than, CO2 emissions from fossil fuels in general. Governmental policies have prioritized capture, use, and storage of CO2, burning coal in new highly efficient low emission power plants, and gas pre-drainage of coal mines. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and China are also introducing new research into alternative, non-fuel uses for coal, such as carbon fibers, nanocarbons, graphene, soil amendments, and as an unconventional ore for critical elements. New to this edition: Each chapter is substantially changed from the 1st edition including expanded and new literature citations and reviews, important new data and information, new features and materials, as well as re-organized and re-designed themes. Importantly, three new chapters cover global coal endowment and gas potential, groundwater systems related to coalbed gas production and biogenic gas generation as well as the changing landscape of coal and coalbed gas influenced by global climate change and net-zero carbon greenhouse gas emissions. FOREWORD When I reviewed the first edition of this book, my initial thought was, "Do we need another book on coal geology?" and then I read it and realised, "Yes, we need this book" and my students downloaded copies as soon as it was available. So now we come to 2023, and a lot has happened in the past decade. For a different reason we might ask if we still need this book, or even coal geoscientists and engineers, as the world aims for rapid decarbonisation of the energy sector and a reduction of coal as a feedstock for industrial resources, like steel manufacture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methane Accumulations From Interrupted Ventilation: With Special Reference to Coal Mines in Illinois and Indiana The mining laws Of many States provide that when ventilation is interrupted in mines in which methane is generated the men. In the workings affected, especially if open lights are used there, shall be gotten out as quickly as possible. There are many mines or sections Of a mine in which only a small quantity Of methane is generated and where, under regular conditions of ventilation, it is so diffused with the air as not to be detectable with a safety lamp. These places are considered nongaseous and Often no concern is felt if the ventilation is interrupted even for several hours at a time. That locally in such mines there may be dangerous accumulations of methane within a short time if the air current is stopped is indi cated by the tests described in this paper. In three mines, two in southern Illinois and one in Indiana, samples Of mine air were collected and analyzed from working places where no methane had been reported by the mine examiner. By stopping the air current during the tests any accumulation Of methane through this interrupted ventilation was detected. The results show a8 methane accumulations from interrupted ventilation. Book excerpt: In order to assess the economic coal bed methane potential of the Illinois Basin, the geological surveys of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky performed a geological assessment of their respective parts of the Illinois Basin. A considerable effort went into generating cumulative coal thickness and bed structure maps to identify target areas for exploratory drilling. Following this, the first project well was drilled in White County, Illinois in October 2003. Eight additional wells were subsequently drilled in Indiana (3) and Kentucky (5) during 2004 and 2005. In addition, a five spot pilot completion program was started with three wells being completed. Gas contents were found to be variable, but generally higher than indicated by historical data. Gas contents of more than 300 scf/ton were recovered from one of the bore holes in Kentucky. Collectively, our findings indicate that the Illinois Basin represents a potentially large source of economic coal bed methane. Additional exploration will be required to refine gas contents and the economics of potential production.
