Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C++ Template Metaprogramming sheds light on the most powerful idioms of today's C++, at long last delivering practical metaprogramming tools and techniques into the hands of the everyday programmer. A metaprogram is a program that generates or manipulates program code. Ever since generic programming was introduced to C++, programmers have discovered myriad "template tricks" for manipulating programs as they are compiled, effectively eliminating the barrier between program and metaprogram. While excitement among C++ experts about these capabilities has reached the community at large, their practical application remains out of reach for most programmers. This book explains what metaprogramming is and how it is best used. It provides the foundation you'll need to use the template metaprogramming effectively in your own work. This book is aimed at any programmer who is comfortable with idioms of the Standard Template Library (STL). C++ power-users will gain a new insight into their existing work and a new fluency in the domain of metaprogramming. Intermediate-level programmers who have learned a few advanced template techniques will see where these tricks fit in the big picture and will gain the conceptual foundation to use them with discipline. Programmers who have caught the scent of metaprogramming, but for whom it is still mysterious, will finally gain a clear understanding of how, when, and why it works. All readers will leave with a new tool of unprecedented power at their disposal—the Boost Metaprogramming Library. Note: CD materials are only available with the print edition.

Book excerpt: Microsoft’s Dynamic Language Runtime (DLR) is a platform for running dynamic languages such as Ruby and Python on an equal footing with compiled languages such as C#. Furthermore, the runtime is the foundation for many useful software design and architecture techniques you can apply as you develop your .NET applications. Pro DLR in .NET 4 introduces you to the DLR, showing how you can use it to write software that combines dynamic and static languages, letting you choose the right tool for the job. You will learn the core DLR components such as LINQ expressions, call sites, binders, and dynamic objects—and how they work together to achieve language interoperability. You’ll see how to mix and match objects and functions from compiled and dynamic languages, so you can write code in the language of your choice while taking advantage of libraries written in other languages. And you'll discover how the various languages interoperate behind the scenes. With the basics out of the way, the book then details the various ways you can leverage the DLR in the design and architecture of your software applications. You’ll learn about runtime code generation, which lets you avoid much of the boilerplate code typical in layered business applications. You’ll see practical examples of using the DLR to build domain-specific languages, and you’ll learn how the DLR helps enable aspect-oriented programming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model-Driven Software Development (MDSD) is currently a highly regarded development paradigm among developers and researchers. With the advent of OMG's MDA and Microsoft's Software Factories, the MDSD approach has moved to the centre of the programmer's attention, becoming the focus of conferences such as OOPSLA, JAOO and OOP. MDSD is about using domain-specific languages to create models that express application structure or behaviour in an efficient and domain-specific way. These models are subsequently transformed into executable code by a sequence of model transformations. This practical guide for software architects and developers is peppered with practical examples and extensive case studies. International experts deliver: * A comprehensive overview of MDSD and how it relates to industry standards such as MDA and Software Factories. * Technical details on meta modeling, DSL construction, model-to-model and model-to-code transformations, and software architecture. * Invaluable insight into the software development process, plus engineering issues such as versioning, testing and product line engineering. * Essential management knowledge covering economic and organizational topics, from a global perspective. Get started and benefit from some practical support along the way!

Book excerpt: Meta-Programming and Model-Driven Meta-Program Development: Principles, Processes and Techniques presents an overall analysis of meta-programming, focusing on insights of meta-programming techniques, heterogeneous meta-program development processes in the context of model-driven, feature-based and transformative approaches. The fundamental concepts of meta-programming are still not thoroughly understood, in this well organized book divided into three parts the authors help to address this. Chapters include: Taxonomy of fundamental concepts of meta-programming; Concept of structural heterogeneous meta-programming based on the original meta-language; Model-driven concept and feature-based modeling to the development process of meta-programs; Equivalent meta-program transformations and metrics to evaluate complexity of feature-based models and meta-programs; Variety of academic research case studies within different application domains to experimentally verify the soundness of the investigated approaches. Both authors are professors at Kaunas University of Technology with 15 years research and teaching experience in the field. Meta-Programming and Model-Driven Meta-Program Development: Principles, Processes and Techniques is aimed at post-graduates in computer science and software engineering and researchers and program system developers wishing to extend their knowledge in this rapidly evolving sector of science and technology.

But in the 1950’s when John Lilly developed his theory of the human biocomputer, this was a dramatic new way of viewing humans. Much like a driver can step out of the car, we are not our biocomputer. The Self is something far greater and more mysterious. Rooted in his extensive knowledge of neurophysiology, neuroanatomy and electronics and developed through personal experimentation in the sensory isolation tank which he invented, Lilly presents a method for learning to manipulate—to drive the bio-robot, which is our vehicle here on Earth. robots. This manual shows how to step out of the mind-body and find out who we really are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the second International Conference on Generative Programming and Component Engineering (GPCE 2003), held September 22–25, 2003, in Erfurt, Germany, sponsored by the NetObjectDays German industrial software development event, in cooperation with the ACM SIGPLAN and SIGSOFT societies. GPCE was created as an e?ort to bring - getherresearchersworkingonboththeprogramminglanguagesandthesoftware engineeringsideofprogramgenerationandcomponentengineering. Thecommon theme of program generation and component engineering is the domain-speci?c nature of both approaches. Depending on the characteristics of a domain, either a generative or a compositional technical solution may be appropriate. In just its second year, GPCE has shown a lot of promise for building a strong community. The response to the call for papers was excellent, with 62 submissions to the technical program, 2 of which were later withdrawn. Each paper received between three and ?ve reviews, many of them quite thorough and hopefully valuable to all authors. The electronic meeting allowed for - depthdiscussionsofallsubmissions, oftentoamuchgreaterextentthanpossible in a physical PC meeting. As a result, 21 papers were selected for presentation at the conference and are included in this volume, together with abstracts for the invited talks by Olivier Danvy and Peri Tarr. Of the accepted papers, 3 are co-authored by PC members (from a total of 5 PC submissions). We tried hard to ensure fairness and hold PC submissions to a high standard. The EDAS conference submission system was used to manage the paper submissions. Our EDAS installation was supported by Blair MacIntyre, who was particularlyhelpfulinresolvingtechnicalissueswiththesystem.
