Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metaphysics of the Supernatural as Illustrated by Descartes There is a tendency on the part of philosophers to aspire to heaven and to' explore heavenly regions. Since heaven has been once for all formed and fixed, the problems of philosophy are always the same. The persistent problems of philosophy reduce themselves to the ques tion of ultimates - the ultimate reality of the world and the ultimate reality of man. This question comes up in philosophy again and again. Only the forms in which it appears are different. They differ with the knowledge, temperament, and surroundings of the philosopher. But no matter in what form this question comes up and what course the road of dialectics takes, philosophers all reach regions that transcend knowledge, and the question being unsolved recurs again. CHAPTER III CONSERVATION OF TRADITIONS DESPITE PROGRESSIVE IDEAS I / Despite the fact that Descartes had set out on a new path, that of naturalism, his later works, the Discourse,1 the Meditations,2 and the Principles3 surprise us with their reaction. Both in subject-matter and in method he fell back into the error of his predecessors against whom vhe had arisen. He tells us in the Discourse that in "pulling down an / old house, we usually preserve the ruins to contribute to the erection I of the new," but Descartes preserved even more than the ruins--a surprising outcome in view of his preparation for the new structure Vand his first attempt at construction. Having first studied his earliest works where the world and life are represented as going on according to natural laws only, independent of all supernatural powers, and where facts are the criterion of truth, we are surprised to find in his later works that his physics and the very existence of the world are made dependent on the existence of a Perfect Being; that the principle of definition is to take the place of facts in the derivation and verification of truth about the material world, and that the senses, which were the most reliable sources of information in the study of nature, are doubted. He thus returned to authority and tradition discarded j by him at the outset. The Cogito ergo sum, which is so glorified in the histories of philosophy as the most original idea of Descartes, is also nothing but a medieval tradition, and is not the thing for which Descartes is to be given an immortal place in the history of philosophy. We find the same in St. Augustine, who in the state of doubt also takes his own existence as the safest starting-point, Si jailor, sum. The anticipation of...

Book excerpt: No doubt the years hunting monsters and saving the universe have had their toll on the Winchesters, but their toughest and most gruesome battles are contained in this book. Think Lucifer was diabolically clever? Think again. No son is more wayward than the one who squanders his intellect and academic career pursuing questions as poignant as “Half-awesome? That’s full-on good, right?” Gathered here for the first time since the formation of Purgatory, a collection of research so arcane and horrific that it would make even the late, great Bobby Singer blush. Supernatural and Philosophy tackles all the big ideas in the long-running hit show Supernatural, covering thorny issues in a fun and accessible way. Even those unfamiliar with the show will find fascinating insights into Heaven, Hell, Angels, Demons, God, and Lucifer. A unique collection of insights into the many philosophical, religious, and paranormal topics in the hit TV show, Supernatural Accessible treatment of thorny issues for a general audience Written by philosophical fans of the show, for philosophical fans of the show Those unfamiliar with the show will still find fascinating insights into Heaven, Hell, Angels, Demons, God, Lucifer, and Good and Evil Contributors tackle issues ranging from the biological classifications of monsters, to the epistemological problems of ghost hunting

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional account of mind/body union attributed to Descartes supposes that the immaterial, thinking mind and the material, non-thinking body interact by means of efficient causation - that the mind causes events in the body, e.g. the voluntary raising of an arm, and vice versa, e.g. the visual sensation of a tree. But this gives rise to a notorious philosophical problem: how can this causal interaction occur between the spiritual mind and the physical body since they have absolutely nothing in common and cannot come into contact with one another?Justin Skirry's book shows how Descartes in fact avoids this enormous problem. Skirry argues, through a critical re-examination of Cartesian metaphysics, that the union of mind and body is not, as most scholars have always maintained, constituted by efficient causal interaction for Descartes, because this would not result in one, complete human nature but in an aggregate of two numerically distinct natures. Descartes argues in the 6th Meditation and elsewhere that mind/body union is constituted by what the scholastics called a 'substantial union', i.e. the union that form (mind) has with matter (body). This substantial union produces a whole that is more than the sum of its parts; the capacity for modes of sensation and voluntary bodily movement are emergent properties of the whole, substantially united mind and body. Therefore, the 'Cartesian' problem of mind-body efficient causal interaction is avoided altogether, since efficient causal occurrences between mind and body play no role in explaining the existence of these modes.

Book excerpt: Descartes’s concern with the proper method of belief formation is evident in the titles of his works—e.g., The Search after Truth, The Rules for the Direction of the Mind and The Discourse on Method of rightly conducting one’s reason and seeking the truth in the sciences. It is most apparent, however, in his famous discussions, both in the Meditations and in the Principles, of one particularly noteworthy source of our doxastic errors—namely, the misuse of one’s will. What is not widely recognized, let alone appreciated and understood, is the relationship between his concern with belief formation and his concern with virtue. In fact, few seem to realize that Descartes regards doxastic errors as moral errors and as sins both because such errors are intrinsically vicious and because they entail notably deleterious social consequences. Reforming the Art of Living seeks to rectify this rather common oversight in two ways. First, it aims to elucidate the nature of Descartes’s account of virtuous belief formation. Second, it aims both (i) to illuminate the social significance of Descartes’s philosophical program as it relates to the understanding and practice not of science, but of religion and (ii) to develop a kind of Leibnizian critique of this aspect of his program. More specifically, it aims to show that Descartes’s project is “dangerous,” insofar as it is subversive not only of traditional Christianity but also of other traditional forms of religion, both in theory and in practice.
