It argues that between 1760 and 1830, the concept of rhythm became crucial to many fields of knowledge, including the study of life and living processes. The book juxtaposes the history of rhythm in music theory, literary theory, and philosophy with the concurrent turn in biology to understanding the living world in terms of rhythmic patterns, rhythmic movement, and rhythmic representations. Common to all these fields was their view of rhythm as a means of organizing time — and of ordering the development of organisms. Janina Wellmann, a historian of science, has written the first systematic study of visualization in embryology. Embryological development circa 1800 was imagined through the pictorial technique of the series, still prevalent in the field today. Tracing the origins of the developmental series back to seventeenth-century instructional graphics for military maneuvers, dance, and craft work, The Form of Becoming reveals the constitutive role of rhythm and movement in the visualization of developing life.

Indeed Latin American populist forces seem to have made neoliberalism their own. The Editors have carefully chosen from South and Central America a representative set of countries through which to explore this phenomenon - Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, El Salvador and Nicaragua. What emerges is an up-to-date, nuanced modern political history of Latin America which does full justice to the distinctive political paths of each country while at the same time making clear the significant extent to which the region's populist tradition as a whole has adapted to the new economic realities. This is in marked contrast to the very different political trajectories of Africa and Asia in the past two decades.

Book excerpt: The origins of selected instances of metamorphosis in Germanic literature are traced from their roots in Ovid's Metamorphoses, grouped roughly on an 'ascending evolutionary scale' (invertebrates, birds, animals, and mermaids). Whilst a broad range of mythological, legendary, fairytale and folktale traditions have played an appreciable part, Ovid's Metamorphoses is still an important comparative analysis and reference point for nineteenth- and twentieth-century German-language narratives of transformations. Metamorphosis is most often used as an index of crisis: an existential crisis of the subject or a crisis in a society's moral, social or cultural values. Specifically selected texts for analysis include Jeremias Gotthelf's Die schwarze Spinne (1842) with the terrifying metamorphoses of Christine into a black spider, the metamorphosis of Gregor Samsa in Kafka's Die Verwandlung (1915), ambiguous metamorphoses in E. T. A. Hoffmann's Der goldne Topf (1814), Hermann Hesse's Piktors Verwandlungen (1925), Der Steppenwolf (1927) and Christoph Ransmayr's Die letzte Welt (1988). Other mythical metamorphoses are examined in texts by Bachmann, Fouqué, Fontane, Goethe, Nietzsche, Nelly Sachs, Thomas Mann and Wagner, and these and many others confirm that metamorphosis is used historically, scientifically, for religious purposes; to highlight identity, sexuality, a dream state, or for metaphoric, metonymic or allegorical reasons.

Book excerpt: This book of biology and medicine shows how diseases: Sickle cell anaemia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, are related to the adaptation of our organism to aerial respiration. This adaptation is operated by a genetic switch substituting a set of foetal proteins, for more adequate, regulated, adult isoforms. We discover how foetal or adult metabolic pathways, may control the switch, and propose pharmacological treatments to boost the expression of the foetal gene, acting as a "spare wheel" to replace the adult gene when it is mutated. In fact this switch recapitulates a process reminding of the evolution of amphibians that left their pond to live in air and land. The foetus is also an aquatic creature that discovers at birth aerial respiration and the new weight of his body. His blood and muscle proteins will adapt. The metamorphosis is not as evident as for a tadpole, but still as deeply written in our genes. In fact, the switch is our second metamorphosis, the story started much earlier, when a host cell, already surviving oxygen, incorporated a bacteria, our future mitochondria, that had a more efficient oxidative metabolism. A symbiotic arrangement followed. In the course of development, the most ancient pathways come on stage first, followed by the most recent mitochondrial acquisitions. The developmental maturation of metabolic pathways changes our cells, it is our first metamorphosis. It is involved in apoptosis in diseases such as Azheimer's or Cancer. Since mitochondria took the burden of making ATP, the ancient oxidative mechanism became redundant. Its ATPase evolved forming acidic compartments that control neurotransmission or thermoregulation. This third metamorphosis is implicated in other diseases (adrenoleucodystrophy). Finally primates, who lost uricase, developed diseases related to the role of uric acid which became their new antioxidant: Gout, Autism or Schizophrenia seem to depend on this last, forth metamorphosis.
