Book excerpt: Using precracked Charpy tests supplemented by center-notched tensile tests, the fracture toughness of five low-alloy and three stainless steel high-strength alloys in sheet form was measured primarily as a function of heat treatment variables such as austenitizing and tempering temperatures. The low alloy steels studied were D6AC (two heats)4340 (martensitic and bainitic conditions), X200 (0.35 and 0.40% carbon), 300M and H11; and the stainless steels were AM 355, PH 15-7Mo and 301. For 4340, in the bainitic condition, the influence of subsequent deformation and aging on fracture toughness was also determined. In addition, preliminary studies of the effect of welding both before and after heat treatment on the toughness of H11, 300M and 4340 were carried out. (Author).

Book excerpt: The main object of this study is to determine the relationship between metal structure and fracture toughness in a variety of high-s rength ferrous sheet alloys, with particular attention to the crack initiation and crack propagation stages of the fracture process. Six composition types of low-alloy high-strength sheet materials were procured, including two carbon levels in one composition type. Screening of various thermo-mechanical and heat treating processes (microstructures) is being carried out by fatigue-precracked Charpy tests in both impact and low bending over a range of test temperatures. Room-temperature precracked Charpy impact tests were completed on a variety of microstructures in 0.130-in. D6AC sheet. The low fracture toughness values obtained indicate that this particular sheet is either of inferior quality or requires special heat treatment to put the carbide into solution. (Author).

Book excerpt: Several factors affect the fracture toughness and tensile strength properties of sheet alloys. Some of these are described for selected alloy conditions tested at 75 and -423 F. Included are: (1) the influence of rolling temperature and reduction per pass on the properties of air-melted Inconel X and AISI 301 given heavy total reductions, (2) the influence of normal commercial cold rolling to heavy reductions on consumable electrode vacuum melted AISI 301 and on air-melted AISI 310, V-36 and Inconel X, and (3) the influence of interstitial content on the properties of annealed 5Al-2.5Sn titanium. The 1-in. wide sharp-edge-notch test was used to evaluate the relative resistance to brittle fracture. Extremely high tensile strength values can be achieved by heavy rolling (>=50 per cent) of AISI type 301 at subzero temperatures. However, very brittle behavior is associated with these conditions. Furthermore, preliminary results do not indicate a definite toughness advantage associated with any particular combination of rolling temperature and total reduction. Of the alloys heavily cold rolled under commercial conditions, AISI type 301 appears to offer the best combination of strength and toughness at both room temperature and -423 F. Regarding the influence of interstitials on the alpha titanium alloy, it is clear that interstitial contents within the currently "normal" range can reduce the fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures. Nominal values of fracture toughness (neglecting slow crack extension) have been used to illustrate the practical significance of sharp-edge-notch tensile data in the design of cryogenic tankage. This is accomplished by calculation of the critical stresses necessary to cause catastrophic propagation of cracks of different size. When the design is based on the cryogenic mechanical properties, this approximate analysis indicates a low interstitial alpha titanium alloy to be the most promising material for liquid hydrogen tanks investigated; on the other hand, if the design is based on the room-temperature mechanical properties, AISI 301 cold rolled 70 per cent (840,000 room-temperature yield strength to density ratio) is superior. This analysis emphasizes that crack tolerance is substantially reduced when the operating temperature is decreased from that of liquid oxygen to that of liquid hydrogen. This decrease in the "margin of safety" is accentuated as the strength level of the alloy is increased.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between microstructure, heat treatment and room temperature fracture toughness has been determined for the low alloy ultra-high strength steels 4130, 4330, 4340, 4140 and 300-M. Optical metallography, microprobe analysis, and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the structure and morphology, while both Charpy V-notch impact tests and plane strain fracture toughness tests were used to determine the fracture properties. The normal commercial heat treatment resulted in the formation of some bainite in all the alloys. MnS inclusions on prior austenite grain boundaries were found to initiate cracks during loading. By increasing the austenitizing temperature to l200 C, the fracture toughness could be increased by at least 60%. For some alloys increasing the severity of the quench in conjunction with the higher austenitizing temperatures resulted in further increases in the fracture toughness, and the elimination of any observable upper bainite. There was no correlation between the Charpy impact test results and the fracture toughness results. The alloys 4130, 4140, 4340 all showed a severe intergranular embrittlement when austenitized at high temperatures and tempered above 200 C, while the alloys 4330 and 300-M exhibited no drop in toughness for the same heat treatment conditions. The as-quenched tensile specimens had a very low 'micro' yield strength which rapidly increased to the level of the 'macro' yield strength when tempered.

Book excerpt: Fracture-toughness testing using principles of fracture mechanics has developed to the point where it can be used as a basis for selection of materials, for estimating limiting design stresses assuming the presence of small flaws, and for analyzing failures. Current methods of measuring plane-stress and plane-strain fracturetoughness parameters are presented in this report. The specimens include center-cracked, edge-cracked, single-edge-cracked, surface-cracked, and notched round bars, which are subjected to tensile loading, and notched bars for bend tests. The different types of specimens permit evaluating sheet, plate, bar stock, and forgings as well as material from failed structures. Application of fracture-toughness parameters to design of high-strength structures is reviewed for both static and fatigue loading. Consideration of the fracture-mechanics concepts in design should lead to fewer problems with brittle fracture in high-strength structures. (Author).
