Book excerpt: A systematic investigation was conducted to examine the fracture behavior of the structural aluminum alloys 2024, 6061, 7075, and 7178 (in selected heat treatments) tested under several controlled conditions. The investigation included both time independent (tensile, shear, and precracked notch-bend) fractures and time dependent (fatigue and stress corrosion) fractures. Specimens were obtained from both sheet and plate material and tested in longitudinal and transverse orientations. Strain rate effects on fracture morphology were examined in tension and shear tests. Fatigue fracture studies included an examination of the influence of minimum-to-maximum-load ratio on fracture morphology. Second-phase particles observed on fracture surfaces and metallographically prepared sections and corrosion products associated with stress corrosion fractures were analyzed chemically using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Fracture morphology was related to the microstructural features, the testing conditions, and the form of commercial product. The characteristic and distinguishing fracture features were reported for the different alloys. The information obtained from the systematic and controlled studies described here should prove useful in the analysis of service failures that often occur under complex service conditions.

Book Synopsis Fracture Characteristics of Several High Strength Aluminum Alloys Using Variable Notch Root Radii by : Joseph H. Mulherin
Download or read book Fracture Characteristics of Several High Strength Aluminum Alloys Using Variable Notch Root Radii written by Joseph H. Mulherin and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A relationship between the stress concentration factor and the fracture toughness parameter was examined for the case of an elliptical hole in an infinite solid. Edge-notched specimens from three high-strength aluminum alloys were tensile loaded to failure. The resulting data from these tests were analyzed, using this relationship. It was indicated that the predicted proportionality between the fracture toughness parameter and the square root of the notch root radius does exist. Further examination of the relationship showed that the fracture occurs at a fixed state of strain within a plastic zone having a size proportional to the original root radius. A departure, however, from the predicted behavior was evident with the introduction of plane strain components at the notch root. This is also discussed. (Author).
Book Synopsis Aluminum-Lithium Alloys by : N Eswara Prasad
Download or read book Aluminum-Lithium Alloys written by N Eswara Prasad and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because lithium is the least dense elemental metal, materials scientists and engineers have been working for decades to develop a commercially viable aluminum-lithium (Al-Li) alloy that would be even lighter and stiffer than other aluminum alloys. The first two generations of Al-Li alloys tended to suffer from several problems, including poor ductility and fracture toughness; unreliable properties, fatigue and fracture resistance; and unreliable corrosion resistance. Now, new third generation Al-Li alloys with significantly reduced lithium content and other improvements are promising a revival for Al-Li applications in modern aircraft and aerospace vehicles. Over the last few years, these newer Al-Li alloys have attracted increasing global interest for widespread applications in the aerospace industry largely because of soaring fuel costs and the development of a new generation of civil and military aircraft. This contributed book, featuring many of the top researchers in the field, is the first up-to-date international reference for Al-Li material research, alloy development, structural design and aerospace systems engineering. Provides a complete treatment of the new generation of low-density AL-Li alloys, including microstructure, mechanical behavoir, processing and applications Covers the history of earlier generation AL-Li alloys, their basic problems, why they were never widely used, and why the new third generation Al-Li alloys could eventually replace not only traditional aluminum alloys but more expensive composite materials Contains two full chapters devoted to applications in the aircraft and aerospace fields, where the lighter, stronger Al-Li alloys mean better performing, more fuel-efficient aircraft
Book Synopsis Aluminium Alloys and Composites by : Kavian Cooke

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminium (Al) is a metal of great importance because of its excellent corrosion resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity, good reflectivity, and very good recycling characteristics. The properties of heat-treatable Al-alloys can be further enhanced by the inclusion of a reinforcing phase that increases the mechanical properties of the overall composite. This book is a comprehensive guide on the different types of aluminum alloys and the new advances that have been made in developing and manufacturing aluminum alloys and composites. This text provides a comprehensive overview of the processing, formability, and chemical composition of aluminum alloys and composites. Part One is focused on evaluating the types and properties of advanced aluminum alloys and composites, while Part Two explores characterization. The advantage of this book is that it provides a detailed review of major advances that have occurred in the development and application of aluminum alloys and composites while outlining a development strategy for these materials.

Book Synopsis Fatigue Crack-Growth Resistance of Aluminum Alloys Under Spectrum Loading. Volume 1. Commercial 2XXX and 7XXX Alloys by : G. V. Scarich
Download or read book Fatigue Crack-Growth Resistance of Aluminum Alloys Under Spectrum Loading. Volume 1. Commercial 2XXX and 7XXX Alloys written by G. V. Scarich and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this program is to obtain metallurgical guidelines and test methodologies for selection and development of spectrum fatigue-resistant, high-strength aluminum alloys for application to aircraft structures. This volume (I) of this report describes the results of baseline characterization of two high-strength aluminum alloys, and compares these results to those obtained in the two previous phases of the program. Twelve commercial 2XXX and 7XXX aluminum alloys were chosen and characterized for chemical composition, microstructure, tensile properties, and fracture toughness. Fatigue crack propagation (FCP) tests were conducted on specimens of each alloy for both constant-amplitude loading (including the near-threshold region) and two F-18 load spectrums. One of the spectrums was dominated by tension loads and the other contained tension and compression loads of nearly equal magnitude. The spectrum FCP testing was performed at the maximum peak stress of 145 MPa (21 ksi) with limited testing at 103 and 169 MPa (15 and 24.5 ksi) to obtain additional data at the low and high end of the crack-growth range. Pertinent fracture surface features were documented on the spectrum fatigue specimens.
