Book Synopsis Early Metal Mining and Production by : Paul T. Craddock
Download or read book Early Metal Mining and Production written by Paul T. Craddock and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical advancement has for millennia been intimately linked to the mining and production of metals, and this book provides a comprehensive history of the early development of extractive metallurgy. Drawing on the latest archaeological discoveries and laboratory investigations, Paul Craddock brings together for the first time the evidence for the very inception of mining and smelting, showing that early techniques were often different from what was previously believed. The book presents much new material throughout and provides new interpretations and insights into many aspects of early metal production right through to the blast furnaces and high-temperature distillation units that heralded the Industrial Revolution. Integrating documentary evidence with metallurgical study and new information from archaeological excavations in Europe, India, North America, and China, this book gives a full and approachable synthesis of mining and metal production everywhere.

Book Synopsis Metal Removal and Recovery from Mining Wastewater and E-waste Leachate by : Suthee Janyasuthiwong
Download or read book Metal Removal and Recovery from Mining Wastewater and E-waste Leachate written by Suthee Janyasuthiwong and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal contamination in the environment is a persisting global issue. The metal reservoirs in the earth have declined due to society’s needs and due to uncontrolled mining activities. Therefore, the idea to recover metals from waste streams has emerged. In this thesis, cost competitive technologies such as adsorption using agro-wastes and precipitation using an inverse fluidized bed (IFB) reactor were investigated, with special emphasis on the recovery of base metals. Groundnut shell showed good potential for metal (Cu, Pb and Zn) removal. From artificial neural network modeling, the performance of the sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) was found to be strongly pH dependent; the removal efficiency of Cu and Zn in the IFB at pH 5.0 was >97%. Electronic waste is a good candidate as secondary metal resource. The recovery of Cu from computer printed circuited boards (PCBs) using biogenic sulfide precipitation was investigated as well. Using this technology, Cu could be recovered at ~0.48 g Cu/g PCBs.

Book Synopsis Mining and the Environment by : Karlheinz Spitz
Download or read book Mining and the Environment written by Karlheinz Spitz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 1203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of mining is replete with controversy of which much is related to environmental damage and consequent community outrage. Over recent decades, this has led to increased pressure to improve the environmental and social performance of mining operations, particularly in developing countries. The industry has responded by embracing the ideals of sustainability and corporate social responsibility. Mining and the Environment identifies and discusses the wide range of social and environmental issues pertaining to mining, with particular reference to mining in developing countries, from where many of the project examples and case studies have been selected. Following an introductory overview of pressing issues, the book illustrates how environmental and social impact assessment, such as defined in "The Equator Principles", integrates with the mining lifecycle and how environmental and social management aims to eliminate the negative and accentuate the positive mining impacts. Practical approaches are provided for managing issues ranging from land acquisition and resettlement of Indigenous peoples, to the technical aspects of acid rock drainage and mine waste management. Moreover, thorough analyses of ways and means of sharing non-transitory mining benefits with host communities are presented to allow mining to provide sustainable benefits for the affected communities. This second edition of Mining and the Environment includes new chapters on Health Impact Assessment, Biodiversity and Gender Issues, all of which have become more important since the first edition appeared a decade ago. The wide coverage of issues and the many real-life case studies make this practice-oriented book a reference and key reading. It is intended for environmental consultants, engineers, regulators and operators in the field and for students to use as a course textbook. As much of the matter applies to the extractive industries as a whole, it will also serve environmental professionals in the oil and gas industries. Karlheinz Spitz and John Trudinger both have multiple years of experience in the assessment of mining projects around the world. The combination of their expertise and knowledge about social, economic, and environmental performance of mining and mine waste management has resulted in this in-depth coverage of the requirements for responsible and sustainable mining.

Download or read book Gambling on Ore written by Kent Curtis and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gambling on Ore examines the development of the western mining industry from the tumultuous and violent Gold Rush to the elevation of large-scale copper mining in the early twentieth century, using Montana as representative of mining developments in the broader US mining west. Employing abundant new historical evidence in key primary and secondary sources, Curtis tells the story of the inescapable relationship of mining to nature in the modern world as the United States moved from a primarily agricultural society to a mining nation in the second half of the nineteenth century. In Montana, legal issues and politics—such as unexpected consequences of federal mining law and the electrification of the United States—further complicated the mining industry’s already complex relationship to geology, while government policy, legal frameworks, dominant understandings of nature, and the exigencies of profit and production drove the industry in momentous and surprising directions. Despite its many uncertainties, mining became an important part of American culture and daily life. Gambling on Ore unpacks the tangled relationships between mining and the natural world that gave material possibility to the age of electricity. Metal mining has had a profound influence on the human ecology and the social relationships of North America through the twentieth century and throughout the world after World War II. Understanding how we forged these relationships is central to understanding the environmental history of the United States after 1850.

Book Synopsis Mitigation of Metal Mining Influenced Water by : James J. Gusek
Download or read book Mitigation of Metal Mining Influenced Water written by James J. Gusek and published by SME. This book was released on 2009 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitigation of Metal Mining Influenced Water is the "how to fix it" volume in a series of six handbooks on technologies for managing metal mine and metallurgical process influenced water. Unlike other texts that focus exclusively on acid drainage from coal mines, this comprehensive series examines both acidic and neutral pH waters from metal mining and metallurgical processes that may impact the environment. The authors take a holistic approach by considering all aspects of the mine life cycle, from planning and design to closure. In this book you'll learn how mining influenced water concerns can be prevented or reduced by disrupting the geochemical relationship that contributes to the release of metals and/or acidity. Industry experts provide insights into understanding a mine's physical environment and how it can influence waste and drainage quality. They outline key issues designers must address, including involving stakeholders who may be affected long after the mine closes. Case histories offer valuable planning and design considerations by illustrating what works and what doesn't. You'll also benefit from a thorough examination of mitigating technologies in a host of mining and processing situations, as well as the latest arsenal of waste treatment options. Mitigation of Metal Mining Influenced Wateris a must-read for planners, regulators, consultants, land mangers, students, researchers, and others concerned about the environmentally sound management of metal mine and metallurgical processing wastes and drainage quality.
