Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electroplating: A Treatise on the Electro-Deposition of Metals With a Chapter on Metal-Colouring and Bronzing The various formulae recommended for solutions and directions for carrying out processes of electro-deposition are in nearly all cases those which are in actual use in workshop practice and are not merely laboratory experiments. The scope of the work does not permit of a very full treatment of the science of electro-chemistry, and those who wish to go more deeply into this fascinating and rapidly developing branch of science are referred to larger works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metal Coloring and Finishing: Methods of Producing Colors on Iron, Steel, Copper, Bronze, Brass and Aluminum Burnishing Metals The subject of metal finishing and coloring has received but scant attention in mechanical publications; this is rather surprising when we note the inclination of the manufacturers of today to combine this artistic treatment with utility, and add contrast of color to the severe straight-line plainness of our commercial products, to produce more beautiful effects. There is nothing new in metal coloring. Ages ago it was old in Japan, and to the Orient we must really turn for original authority on successful coloring of metals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The techniques of metal colouring, bronzing and patination are assuming a new importance in contemporary fine metalwork and design. Richard Hughes and Michael Rowe have assembled and tested the recipes included in this book, which is the most comprehensive work on the subject currently available, an essential reference and sourcebook for practitioners and all those involved in sculpture, architecture, design and the decorative arts. It brings together hundreds of recipes and treatments previously scattered in a variety of old books and technical papers, and provides the artist-craftsman with a very wide range of coloured finishes. Each of the recipes included has been tested and evaluated by the authors, and the practical procedures involved are clearly explained. In addition, they have devised techniques that considerably broaden the range of surface finishes that can be obtained. The metals covered are bronze and yellow brass in cast form; copper, gilding metal, yellow brass and silver in sheet form; and silver-plate and copper-plate. The book is easy to use; all the recipes are classified according to the colour and surface finish they produce on each metal. Colour illustrations show over 200 examples of finishes as test pieces of metal, or as cast or spun bowls. Notes accompanying each recipe draw attention to potentially dangerous processes or chemicals, and to the correct safety precautions. Safety procedures in general are covered thoroughly in a separate section. Detailed information on practical workshop methods and how to avoid any problems that may be encountered is given in sections on the various techniques. A glossary of archaic chemical terms and their modem equivalents is included. An historical introduction outlines the various metalworking traditions with which the use of colouring techniques is associated. An extensive bibliography gives over 400 references of historical, practical and theoretical interest.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Dipping, Burnishing, Lacquering and Bronzing Brass Ware Screws, tin, and similar metals, must be carefully kept apart and treated by themselves, on no account being allowed to come into contact later with the dipping acid, and the whole of the brass work must, if very dirty or greasy, as they probably will be if gasfittings, lamps, or vases, be placed in a strong liquor or lye made of potash, and be boiled up therein till all dirt has been removed and the metal is clean. When this is so, take them out, rinse in hot water, and let them dry. With the exception of spun pieces, which would speedily melt away, the pieces must now be an nealed, that is, made red-hot, being careful not to bring the metal to a white heat, on a coke fire, and it is here that the forge and bellows will be found very useful. This annealing process makes the metal soft and the more amenable to the burnisher, while it also removes all dirt, etc. A pure coal fire must not be employed for annealing. If not very dirty, the work can be annealed without being previously boiled up; but if at all dirty, the metal should be boiled up, as the annealing, without the boiling, is apt to burn small particles of dirt into the brass, which are afterwards extremely difficult. To remove. Therefore, for the sake of a 'little more trouble, time, and expense, it is better to both boil and anneal all work when possible. Of course my readers will understand that it is only cast or wrought work which can be annealed, as the spun work before alluded to will speedily collapse, as will also the other varieties if the greatest care is.
