Book Synopsis The Rise of Surrealism by : Willard Bohn
Download or read book The Rise of Surrealism written by Willard Bohn and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Rise of Surrealism, Willard Bohn examines the various literary and artistic developments that prepared the way for the international Surrealist movement—including Cubism, Metaphysical Art, and Dada—as well as the triumph of Surrealism itself. In an analysis that spans the first two-thirds of the twentieth century, Bohn surveys writers and artists from France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, and the United States, examining both their aversion to mimesis and the solutions they devised to replace it. Much of the book is concerned with competing artistic models and with different strategies for creating avant-garde works, and focuses on such figures as Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Weber, Marius de Zayas, Francis Picabia, Giorgio de Chirico, André Breton, J. V. Foix, and Joan Miró. The dynamics of the imagery that painters and poets chose to employ and the new roles this imagery assumed in their compositions are also discussed.

Download or read book Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy, Volume 52 written by Victor Caston and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford Studies in Ancient Philosophy is a volume of original articles on all aspects of ancient philosophy. The articles may be of substantial length, and include critical notices of major books. OSAP is now published twice yearly, in both hardback and paperback. "'Have you seen the latest OSAP?' is what scholars of ancient philosophy say to each other when they meet in corridors or on coffee breaks. Whether you work on Plato or Aristotle, on Presocratics or sophists, on Stoics, Epicureans, or Sceptics, on Roman philosophers or Greek Neoplatonists, you are liable to find OSAP articles now dominant in the bibliography of much serious published work in your particular subject: not safe to miss." - Malcolm Schofield, Cambridge University "OSAP was founded to provide a place for long pieces on major issues in ancient philosophy. In the years since, it has fulfilled this role with great success, over and over again publishing groundbreaking papers on what seemed to be familiar topics and others surveying new ground to break. It represents brilliantly the vigour - and the increasingly broad scope - of scholarship in ancient philosophy, and shows us all how the subject should flourish." - M.M. McCabe, King's College London

Book Synopsis La mesure de l’être by : Sylvain Roudaut
Download or read book La mesure de l’être written by Sylvain Roudaut and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to analyze the problem of the intensity of forms in the late Middle Ages and to show how this debate eventually gave rise to a new metaphysical project in the 14th century: the project of quantifying the different types of perfections existing in the universe – that is the project of “measuring being”.
Book Synopsis Reactionary Mathematics by : Massimo Mazzotti
Download or read book Reactionary Mathematics written by Massimo Mazzotti and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A forgotten episode of mathematical resistance reveals the rise of modern mathematics and its cornerstone, mathematical purity, as political phenomena. The nineteenth century opened with a major shift in European mathematics, and in the Kingdom of Naples, this occurred earlier than elsewhere. Between 1790 and 1830 its leading scientific institutions rejected as untrustworthy the “very modern mathematics” of French analysis and in its place consolidated, legitimated, and put to work a different mathematical culture. The Neapolitan mathematical resistance was a complete reorientation of mathematical practice. Over the unrestricted manipulation and application of algebraic algorithms, Neapolitan mathematicians called for a return to Greek-style geometry and the preeminence of pure mathematics. For all their apparent backwardness, Massimo Mazzotti explains, they were arguing for what would become crucial features of modern mathematics: its voluntary restriction through a new kind of rigor and discipline, and the complete disconnection of mathematical truth from the empirical world—in other words, its purity. The Neapolitans, Mazzotti argues, were reacting to the widespread use of mathematical analysis in social and political arguments: theirs was a reactionary mathematics that aimed to technically refute the revolutionary mathematics of the Jacobins. Reactionaries targeted the modern administrative monarchy and its technocratic ambitions, and their mathematical critique questioned the legitimacy of analysis as deployed by expert groups, such as engineers and statisticians. What Mazzotti’s penetrating history shows us in vivid detail is that producing mathematical knowledge was equally about producing certain forms of social, political, and economic order.

Book Synopsis The Complete Works of Gabrio Piola: Volume II by : Francesco dell'Isola
Download or read book The Complete Works of Gabrio Piola: Volume II written by Francesco dell'Isola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the second volume of Piola’s original Italian text together with the English-language translation and comments, showing convincingly that Gabrio Piola’s work must still be regarded as a modern theory. Gabrio Piola’s work has had an enormous impact on the development of applied mathematics and continuum mechanics. As such, a committee of scientific experts took it upon themselves to translate his complete works. In a second step, they commented on Piola’s work and compared it to modern theories in mechanics in order to stress Piola’s impact on modern science and prove and confirm that he achieved significant milestones in applied mathematics.

Book Synopsis The Realism of Luigi Capuana by : Judith Davies
Download or read book The Realism of Luigi Capuana written by Judith Davies and published by MHRA. This book was released on 1979 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranging from science fiction, stories for children and poetry to drama, narrative, criticism, and 'non-fiction' works on such subjects as spiritualism and Sicilian customs,Capuana's volumes betray different levels and kinds of commitment, some being produced to meet urgent financial needs, others, like the parodies on the bard of Catania, Mario Rapisardi, starting life as exercises in literary humour, still others being written for polemical or at any rate extra-literary reasons, and yet shedding light on the letterato. Without ignoring these secondary areas, this study sets out to examine the central issue of Capuana's realism as critic and narrator, and to account for its moments of apparent inconsistency, its limitations and strengths in the course of a long career which until recently has tended to be treted in piecemeal fashion. In so doing it proceeds chronologically, relating Capuana's aims and achievements to the changing cultural context which conditioned them, and relying extensively on articles which have remained buried in the newspapers and journals of both Sicily and the Italian mainland to explore uninvestigated aspects of his critical meditation or to illuminate the areas of obscurity in his development as both critic and narrator.A close analysis of narrative texts has been a main instrument of enquiry in this work: though it aims primarily at an evaluation of Capuana, it also hopes to contribute to the understanding of the period in which he lived.
