Abstract: This study explored the metacognitive awareness of reading strategies used among F.3 English as a Second Language (ESL) students enrolled in a band 1 secondary school in Hong Kong. Usage as well as strategic knowledge of reading strategies of high and low English proficiency students were compared quantitatively and qualitatively. In the quantitative portion of the study, 37 students responded to the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI), which is designed to assess matacognitive awareness and perceived usage of reading strategies of adolescent and adult ESL readers when they read school-related materials. In the qualitative portion of the study, four participants (2 female and 2 male) from the high proficiency group and four participants (2 female and 2 male) from the low proficiency group participated in a semi-structured interview, which aimed to elicit their strategic knowledge in reading English. Results revealed that Hong Kong ESL students on the whole used a wide range of reading strategies. High-proficiency ESL students were more able to verbalize the strategic knowledge and strategic resources available to them. They showed better understanding on planning for reading, monitoring their comprehension and tackling reading difficulties. In contrast, the low-proficiency group showed limited strategic knowledge on why and how to employ the reading strategies. Moreover, their utilization of reading strategies seemed to be confined to their limited lexical and vocabulary knowledge in ESL reading. Based on the findings, some practical implications for ESL reading-strategy instruction are drawn. Limitations of this study and recommendations for further research were discussed. Book excerpt: Reading is an important receptive skill, which provides learners with sufficient inputs to accelerate productive skills. However, the research shows that not only a large number of ESL/EFL learners in the world but also those in Viet Nam encounter many challenges in reading English materials, which directly and seriously affects their language development. Among suggested approaches, awareness of reading strategies is the dominant one. Therefore, this experimental study was an attempt to investigate the metacognitive awareness of reading strategies employed by Vietnamese non-English major students, examine whether it had a positive relationship with their reading comprehension, and discover whether it helped differentiate successful readers from unsuccessful ones. Correspondingly, the following research questions were posed: (1) What types of reading strategies do Vietnamese non-English major students report employing the most and least frequently? (2) What is the relationship between metacognitive awareness of reading strategies and students' reading comprehension? (3) Are there any differences between successful readers and unsuccessful readers regarding their metacognitive awareness of reading strategies? In this mixed-methods study, participants were 90 non-English major junior students from two classes of Cao Thang College in HCM City of Viet Nam. The results indicated their moderate awareness of reading strategies. Among three sub-categories of reading strategies, supporting reading strategies and global-reading strategies were reported to be employed most and least frequently, respectively. Moreover Pearson Correlation revealed a strong relationship between metacognitive awareness of reading strategies and students' reading comprehension. In addition, the t-test emphasized that there was a significant difference between successful readers and unsuccessful readers in metacognitive awareness of reading strategies. Based on these findings, teachers and educators are recommended to appropriately incorporate these reading strategies in the instruction of English reading lessons as well as organize some training programs or workshops to enhance students' metacognitive awareness of reading strategies in order to boost their reading competence and reinforce their academic achievements.

Book excerpt: ESL young adult learners deserve instructional pathways that support and set them with strategies for success in a mindful manner. Learning English with the notion of "thinking about thinking," or self-regulation of processes, enable the learner to master specific tasks, based on goal setting, planning, monitoring and evaluating their performance all the time. This project proposes to raise awareness in the use of metacognitive reading strategies in ESL in order to equip language learners with tools that allow them to get the most out of every reading experience in the target language. There are many reading strategies, however knowing what, when, why and how to use them is crucial for accomplishing academic goals through reading. Self-regulating the process of learning encourages learners to be always aware of the way they approach reading by asking and answering questions before, during and after reading, achieving the task while mastering the pre-established objectives. Metacognitive reading strategies for ESL learners are approachable, and there are different ones for every stage of reading. Young adult ESL learners must have access to strategies that allow them to plan, arrange and evaluate their success, and language instructors should be ready to offer them that metacognitive instruction getting them ready for success.

Abstract: ABSTRACT This study aims at gaining more insights on the vocabulary learning process of the low proficient second language learners of pre-intermediate or intermediate level. It is expected that the information obtained can benefit the vocabulary development of the low achievers. As vocabulary range is one of the most important factors that influence the progress of learners' second language learning, the study looks forward to offer suggestions to facilitate learners' vocabulary proficiency. The study examines low achievers' perceptions on vocabulary learning and their pattern of vocabulary learning strategy use especially the use of metacognitive vocabulary learning strategies. The study also intends to compare the effectiveness and preferences of the learners of two kinds of vocabulary learning strategies, social vocabulary learning strategies and cognitive vocabulary learning strategies. Data were collected through two questionnaires, a classroom experiment and semi-structured interviews. The results reveal the learning styles of the low achievers, particularly their intensive use of repetition strategies and their extremely limited use of metacognitive learning strategies to manage their vocabulary learning. Moreover, both social and cognitive vocabulary learning strategies are found to have their strengths and weaknesses to the low achievers. As a result, strategy training is highly recommended for these learners and suggestions on the preparation and the content of strategy training are made. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3870695 Subjects: Vocabulary - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong Learning strategies Underachievers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

Abstract: Limited research has been done on the reading strategies of primary school children learning English as a foreign language, particularly in the Hong Kong context. To contribute much needed research in this area, this study uses miscue analysis and prompted think aloud procedures to investigate the reading strategies used by higher and lower proficiency native Cantonese speaking students learning English as a foreign language in primary 4. As part of the investigation the study focuses on the strategies that these students use to comprehend unfamiliar words in context and the contribution of graphophonic awareness skills to the reading process. The study found that (a) higher proficiency students have a clearer awareness of the reading process and the importance of overall coherence and comprehension than their lower proficiency counterparts; (b) higher proficiency students were able to make efficient and effective use of the syntactic and semantic cueing systems to reduce their reliance on graphophonic and pictorial cues; and (c) higher proficiency students focused on more sophisticated graphophonic stategies, such as blending chunks of sounds, identification of syllable and association with other words, while lower proficiency students were more likely to engage in lower level pronunciation strategies, such as blending single sounds, or attempting whole word visual recall.
